BACKGROUND: Injuries of the interosseous membrane (IOM) of the forearm are frequently unrecognized, difficult to treat, and can result in a devastating sequelae for the wrist and elbow. PURPOSE: The purpose of this review article is to evaluate the dignosis, biomechanics, clinical results, and propose a treatment approach to this rare complex entity. METHODS: The biomechanical and clinical literature is reviewed. A treatment approach is described based on the known biomechanics and clinical experience of the senior author (T...

We report a mother and daughter with autosomal recessive ataxia with occulomotor apraxia in whom sequence analysis of senataxin revealed a dignosis of AOA2 (ataxia with occulomotor apraxia type 2) in both individuals. The apparent dominant inheritance pattern (pseudodominant) was the result of the unusual coincidence of both mother and daughter being compound heterozygotes for senataxin mutations. Our case exemplifies the challenges of diagnosis in hereditary ataxias, and the limitations of genetic testing guided solely by patterns of inheritance...

INTRODUCTION: To assess the clinical presentation of patients who underwent surgical exploration for acute scrotum and to investigate the potentially related factors for differential dignosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 97 patients who underwent surgical exploration for acute scrotum between May 2007 and July 2013. The patients were divided into two groups as follows: Group1 included patients with testicular torsion (TT) and Group 2 contained patients with acute scrotal pathologies other than TT, including torsion of the testicular appendage, epididymo-orchitis, trauma and Henoch-Schönlein purpura...

BACKGROUND: Perineal hernias may occur after the completion of surgery in this region, or may occur as a primary lesion. Among the less frequent are the perineal hernias. CLINICAL CASE: Female patient, 42 years old, with perineal tumor mass on the right of the anus, spontaneously occurring, five years of evolution, with dimensions of 6 × 10 cm, soft and reducible behind transverse perineal muscle. With dignosis of primary posterior perineal hernia, surgery was performed by the perineum with Mersilene mesh placement...

Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous mycosis caused by Sporothrix complex, endemic in Abancay, Peru. Is acquired by traumatic inoculation with plant material. Common clinical presentations are lymphatic cutaneous and fixed cutaneous disease. We report 2 cases of fixed cutaneous sporotrichosis with granulomatous appearance. The first case was a patient of 65 years old with no risk factors and the second case was a 67 year old diabetic patient. Subjects underwent mycological culture with Sabouraud agar, with isolation of Sporothrix schenckii and clinical dignosis of fixed cutaneous sporotrichosis with granulomatous appearance...

BACKGROUND: Crimean-congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is an acute tick-borne viral, zoonotic disease with hemorrhagic manifestations and considerable mortality in humans. The purpose of this study was to introduce CCHF as a case report from Babol, north of Iran. It is known as an endemic pathogen in some regions of Iran. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of CCHF suffering from sudden onset of fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, melena and hemorrhagic manifestations like petechiae and epistaxis accompanied with evidence of ticks bite in a non-endemic area in the north of Iran...

INTRODUCTION: Subclinical depression is a prevalent condition with important implications for patients' functioning and wellbeing. However, there is a lack of studies operationalising its definition and studying its clinical significance and health impact in depth. This work analyses subclinical depression impact on a health satus score derived from eight heath domains, and its prevalence in Spanish population. METHODS: The sample was selected from World Health Survey database, choosing the answers for Spain of people with a dignosis of subclinical depression and no depressive disorders...

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) survivors were screened for risk factors of cardiovascular disease. Forty-four ALL survivors in first remission were enrolled. Twenty-six also received 12-18 Gy cranial radiotherapy (RT). Patients' body mass indexes (BMIs) at dignosis and during the study were compared. Metabolic syndrome (MS) evaluation was performed in patients, parents, and siblings older than 6 years. Homeostasis Model Assessment (HOMA) index of the survivors was also calculated. In survivors with impaired fasting glucose levels, oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed...

OBJECTIVE: To study on CTA and MRI in the diagnosis and treatment of hemangioma in the limb skeletal muscles, and to explore therapeutic effects of surgical treatment. METHODS: From April 2003 to February 2011, 18 patients with intramuscular hemangioma in extremities were treated with surgical excision or dense circle suture method. Among the patients, 8 patients were male and 10 patients were female, ranging in age from 5 to 28 years, with an average of 12.5 years...

OBJECTIVE: To explore the alone and joint diagnostic value of serum golgi protein 73 (GP73), alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and the percentage of lectin-reactive aipha-fetoprotein (AFP-L3) of primary hepatic carcinoma (PHC), and provide a novel method for diagnosis for PHC and screening for high-risk population. METHODS: ELISA was used to detect the serum level of GP73, AFP and AFP-L3% in 81 cases of PHC,176 cases chronic hepatitis and liver cirrhosis, 30 cases other tumber cancer and 40 cases of health people...

We performed a genetic dignosis using p53 immunohistochemistry for the detection of lymph node micrometastasis. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed in 12 node-negative patients with breast cancer who subsequently showed relapse. There was no p53 immunostaining in 197 lymph nodes from 12 patients, while 2 were positive in the 12 primary lesions. p53 immunohistochemistry is not an alternative method for detecting lymph node micrometastasis in node-negative breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: To explore the characteristics and clinical significance of diffusing capacity in the patients with lung cancer. METHODS: The pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) was measured with the rebreathing method in 138 patients with primary lung cancer, and 86 were performed pulmonary resection. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in DLCOrb and DLCOrbc between the groups with different histological type and degree of ventilation impairment and general type (P > 0...

We experienced a case of pulmonary pleomorphic carcinoma. This patient was a 67-year-old male and was admitted because of an abnormal lung shadow on chest X-ray. Transbronchial biopsy was performed to the polypoid lesion of the left B10, however dignosis was not confirmed. For the shadow was strongly suspisious for lung carcinoma left lower lobectomy was performed. The resected tumor was composed of spindle cell component and basaloid squamous cell carcinoma component indicating unusual pulmonary pleomorphic carcinoma...

It is of paramount importance for the diagnosis and therapy of lung cancer, even for the increasing of 5-year survival rate in that the early dignosis of malignant pulmonary nodules are made by intelligent identification successfully. As it stands, in intelligent identification of pulmonary nodules, computer-aided detection/diagnosis (CAD) plays the most important role. The key points of intelligent identification of pulmonary nodules are (1) Detecting pulmonary nodules based on the characterization of nodule appearance; (2) Measuring accurately the nodule size; (3) Computing accurately the growth rate...

UNLABELLED: THE DIAGNOSIS OF DEPRESSION: Depressive disorder is nowadays diagnosed by the two widely used diagnostic systems--International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organisation, 10th revision and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Criteria of the American Psychiatric Organisation, 4th edition. The criteria for depressive disorder used in these two systems are almost identical. POSTSTROKE DEPRESSION: The dignosis of depression may be difficult to establish in stroke patients, especially in patients with aphasia/dysphasia, anosognosia and other cognitive dysfunction...
