INTRODUCTION: The utilization of ultrasonography (USG) is progressively growing to verify the accurate positioning of the endotracheal tube (ETT). Non-detection of the esophageal intubation can be fatal. Various techniques are employed to confirm the placement of the ETT, but none of them are considered optimal. Quantitative waveform capnography (qWC) is often regarded as the most reliable method for this purpose; however, it may not necessarily be accessible and can be expensive. Hence, this investigation was carried out to contrast the use of bedside upper airway USG with qWC in order to confirm the accurate positioning of the ETT following intubation...

In the emergency department, there are many symptoms patients present. One of the major symptoms is fever which could be the only symptom, as our patient had. Not only do infections, drugs, trauma, etc., cause fever, but also undetermined cancer types do. In this case, we are presenting a 28-year-old male coming with a 3-week duration of fever and being admitted with the diagnosis of pulmonary artery intimal sarcoma as generally misconceived with pulmonary thromboembolism, to raise awareness of this fatal cancer...

BACKGROUND: Systolic murmur suggesting the association of aortic valve (AV) stenosis or obstructive pathology in the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) usually requires preoperative echocardiographic evaluation for elective surgery. CASE: In a 63-year-old female patient undergoing elective thoracic surgery, the systolic murmur was auscultated on the right sternal border of the second intercostal space in the preoperative patient holding area. Point-of-care (POC) transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) demonstrated a systolic jet flow in the LVOT area...

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous arteriovenous fistulas (AVF), in contrast to iatrogenic or post-traumatic ones, are extremely rare and only sporadically published in the literature. In the absence of exposure risk, the diagnosis of AVF can be challenging, especially if it is an incidental finding. CASE HISTORY: An 80-year-old female patient presented to our vascular consultation because of swelling of the left leg due to varicosis. For years, she had also noticed that the right foot seemed to be cooler...

A 34-year-old non hypertensive, non-diabetic and ill looking weak woman came to our emergency department with shortness of breath NYHA III-IV, severe bilateral pedal edema extending up to the thighs and gross ascites. Physical examination revealed 3mm pitting ankle and leg edema and hemodynamically was stable with raised jugular venous pressure. There was a closing and opening mechanical click on Cardiac auscultation. At the lower left sternal border, there was grade 2/6 holodiastolic rumble and a grade 2/6 systolic murmur...

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a common birth defect in children. Intelligent auscultation algorithms have been proven to reduce the subjectivity of diagnoses and alleviate the workload of doctors. However, the development of this algorithm has been limited by the lack of reliable, standardized, and publicly available pediatric heart sound databases. Therefore, the objective of this research is to develop a large-scale, high-standard, high-quality, and accurately labeled pediatric congenital heart disease (CHD) heart sound database, and perform classification tasks to evaluate its performance, filling this important research gap...

BACKGROUND: To perform step-by-step analysis of the different factors (material, anesthesia technique, human, and location) that led to major pneumothorax during an infrequent pediatric cardiac MRI and to prevent its occurrence in the future. Anesthesia equipment used in a remote location is often different than those in operating rooms. For magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ventilation devices and monitors must be compatible with the magnetic fields. During cardiac MRI numerous apneas are required and, visual contact with the patient is limited for clinical evaluation...

Morgagni hernia is a rare congenital defect of the diaphragm, especially seen in children but rarely observed in adults. It occurs due to a congenital defect during the development of the diaphragm. Bochdalek hernia is a common congenital form of diaphragmatic hernia. Morgagni hernia is usually rare with a prevalence of approximately 2-3%. Beaver tail liver, which is also called sliver of liver, is a rare variant of liver morphology. Sometimes elongated left lobe of the liver can extend laterally across the midline to contact and often surround the spleen...

In this paper we study the heart sound segmentation problem using Deep Neural Networks. The impact of available electrocardiogram (ECG) signals in addition to phonocardiogram (PCG) signals is evaluated. To incorporate ECG, two different models considered, which are built upon a 1D U-net - an early fusion one that fuses ECG in an early processing stage, and a late fusion one that averages the probabilities obtained by two networks applied independently on PCG and ECG data. Results show that, in contrast with traditional uses of ECG for PCG gating, early fusion of PCG and ECG information can provide more robust heart sound segmentation...

Cardiovascular disease, particularly Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD), is one of the leading causes of death in many developing countries. RHD is manageable and treatable with early detection. However, multiple countries across the globe suffer from a scarcity of experienced physicians who can perform screening at large scales. Advancements in machine learning and signal processing have paved way for Phonocardiogram (PCG)-based automatic heart sound classification. The direct implication of such methods is that it is possible to enable a person without specialized training to detect potential cardiac conditions with just a digital stethoscope...

Cardiovascular disease (CVDs) has become one of the leading causes of death, posing a significant threat to human life. The development of reliable Artificial Intelligence (AI) assisted diagnosis algorithms for cardiac sounds is of great significance for early detection and treatment of CVDs. However, there is scarce research in this field. Existing research mainly faces three major challenges: (1) They mainly limited to murmur classification and cannot achieve murmur grading, but attempting both classification and grading may lead to negative effects between different multi-tasks...

Spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SPM) is a rare but potentially life-threatening clinical entity in which free air is introduced into the mediastinum. It most commonly presents in young males and has an incidence of approximately 0.002% of the general population. Symptoms include sudden onset chest pain, dyspnea, neck pain, vomiting, and odynophagia. Physical examination usually reveals subcutaneous emphysema, hoarse voice, tachycardia, tachypnea, and occasionally a Hamman's sign, which is a mediastinal "crunch" sound heard on cardiac auscultation...

The healthcare industry has made significant progress in the diagnosis of heart conditions due to the use of intelligent detection systems such as electrocardiograms, cardiac ultrasounds, and abnormal sound diagnostics that use artificial intelligence (AI) technology, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Over the past few decades, methods for automated segmentation and classification of heart sounds have been widely studied. In many cases, both experimental and clinical data require electrocardiography (ECG)-labeled phonocardiograms (PCGs) or several feature extraction techniques from the mel-scale frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC) spectrum of heart sounds to achieve better identification results with AI methods...

Danon disease is a rare X-linked disorder caused by deficiency of the lysosome-associated membrane protein-2. We report a case of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy secondary to a novel mutation in the lysosome-associated membrane protein-2 gene in a 10-year-old male adolescent. We performed a modified extended Morrow procedure to minimise the risk of death and improve the patient's quality of life. The patient did not have exertional dyspnoea, and auscultation did not reveal a cardiac murmur at 1-year follow-up...
