The prevalence and quality of locum tenens coverage in pediatric surgery have not been determined. An Internet-based survey of American Pediatric Surgical Association members was conducted: 1) practice description; 2) use and frequency of locum tenens coverage; 4) whether the surgeon provided such coverage; and 5) Likert scale responses (strongly disagree, disagree, neutral, agree, strongly agree) to statements addressing its acceptability and quality (two × five contingency table and χ(2) analyses, significance at P < 0...

BACKGROUND: There is a national shortage of psychiatrists, and according to nationally available data, it is projected to get worse. Locum tenens psychiatry and telepsychiatry are two ways to fill the shortages of psychiatric providers that exist in many areas in the United States. Employment and salary data in these areas can be used to illuminate current trends and anticipate future solutions to the problem of increasing demand for, and decreasing supply of, psychiatrists in the United States...

OBJECTIVES: The research determined (1) the information sources that family physicians (FPs) most commonly use to update their general medical knowledge and to make specific clinical decisions, and (2) the information sources FPs found to be most physically accessible, intellectually accessible (easy to understand), reliable (trustworthy), and relevant to their needs. METHODS: A cross-sectional postal survey of 792 FPs and locum tenens, in full-time or part-time medical practice, currently practicing or on leave of absence in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan was conducted during the period of January to April 2008...

OBJECTIVES: To compare the physiotherapy service provided when therapists' decisions are guided by an evidence-based protocol with usual care (i.e. patient management based on therapists' clinical decisions). DESIGN: Exploratory, controlled, pragmatic sequential time block clinical trial. SETTING: Level 3 surgical unit in a tertiary hospital in South Africa. PARTICIPANTS: All patients admitted consecutively to the surgical unit over a 3-month period were allocated to usual or protocol care based on date of admission...

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND: We recently proposed that Lebanon could become a regional 'academic hub' through the repatriation of emigrated Lebanese physicians who would then provide clinical services in the Arab Gulf region on a locum tenens basis. The objectives of this study were to assess the willingness of Lebanese medical graduates practicing in the United States of America to relocate to Lebanon and the Arab Gulf region and to explore the factors associated with this willingness...

An increasing percentage of emergency departments are reporting an inadequate number of on-call specialists. This situation is causing a growing crisis in emergency department on-call coverage for patients requiring orthopaedic care. Many orthopaedic surgeons are electing to opt out of emergency department on-call service. For many reasons, including a dwindling supply of eager participants, more medical groups are finding it difficult to fulfill their on-call obligations. This problem demands a variety of strategies to address the multiple causative factors that occur in practice settings...

INTRODUCTION: Maintaining hospital consultant staffing levels often requires the employment of locum tenens to meet service needs. This is particularly so in hospitals where core clinical services are run by a small number of permanently appointed consultants. The problems associated with locum employment are underestimated and little attention has been directed towards addressing the issue in the rural general hospitals of Scotland. This study looked at the permanent and short- and long-term locum consultant usage over an 8 year period in one Scottish rural general hospital, the Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway...

Physicians are not immune to job boredom, which may be brought on by lack of a stimulating job; a job that provides little opportunity for personal growth, development, or advancement; and work settings that are poorly matched to physicians' skills, interests, and capabilities. Common remedies include switching specialties, practicing concierge medicine, and taking locum tenens assignments. Some physicians counter boredom by leaving practice for jobs in the pharmaceutical and managed care industries, as well as other types of medical organizations...

Due to the emergent unpredictable nature of cardiac surgery, perfusionists, potentially, are susceptible to extended work hours and acute sleep deprivation. While fatigue among other healthcare clinicians has been studied, there has been no research on this topic specifically in the perfusion community. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to: (1) collect preliminary data on the prevalence of fatigue in perfusion and (2) identify if there were concerns regarding fatigue, performance and perfusion safety...

If you're about to overhaul your entire ED physician staff, there's no need to rush. It's better to take your time and do things right, say the leaders at St. Joseph's Hospital in Buckhannon, WV. A goal was established that the transition would take about 6-7 months. Contract physicians and locum tenens staff were used during the transition to keep the ED running smoothly. The nurse and physician leader were available.
