A 77-year-old man with a personal history of familial Mediterranean fever presented with a slowly enlarging tumefaction of the left abdominal wall and persistent inflammatory syndrome despite good adherence to colchicine. 18F-FDG PET/CT showed a hypermetabolic muscular mass of the abdominal wall along with other hypermetabolic lesions including a peritoneal mass and several subcutaneous soft tissue nodules. CT-guided needle biopsy led to the diagnosis of a muscular localization of a malignant peritoneal mesothelioma, which is an extremely rare complication of familial Mediterranean fever...

BACKGROUND: Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare and highly aggressive tumor. Its clinical manifestations are diverse, and the symptoms are not specific. Some patients will develop paraneoplastic syndrome (PS) during the disease course. This study aims to analyze the risk factors of PS in patients with MPM and their impacts on prognosis. METHODS: The clinical data of MPM patients who underwent cytoreductive surgery plus hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS + HIPEC) at our center from June 2015 to May 2023 were retrospectively analyzed...

Effective treatment options for peritoneal surface malignancies (PSMs) are scarce. Oncolytic virotherapy with recombinant vaccinia viruses might constitute a novel treatment option for PSM. We aimed to identify the most effective oncolytic vaccinia virus strain in two murine mesothelioma cell lines and the oncolytic potential in a murine model of peritoneal mesothelioma. Cell lines AB12 and AC29 were infected in vitro with vaccinia virus strains Lister (GLV-1h254), Western Reserve (GLV-0b347), and Copenhagen (GLV-4h463)...

Well-differentiated papillary mesothelial tumor (WDPMT) is a distinct form of mesothelioma with low malignant potential and is mostly found in the peritoneal cavity. It consists of mesothelial cells with papillary structure and bland cytology. We report a rare case of WDPMT with suspicious invasive foci in the tunica vaginalis. WDPMT with invasive foci is known to have a tendency for recurrence. Therefore, careful attention should be given to properly diagnosing and treating this rare entity.

BACKGROUND: Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is the standard of care for selected cases of peritoneal surface malignancy. However, due to its morbidity and learning curve, it is only delivered in six centres in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand (AoNZ). In this study, we report peri-operative morbidity and mortality following CRS/HIPEC at Waikato and Braemar Hospitals, which have treated patients from all regions of AoNZ since 2008. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed a database of all patients undergoing CRS and HIPEC from 01/01/2008 to 01/11/2020 at Waikato and Braemar Hospitals...

BACKGROUND: Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) is an extremely rare and highly invasive tumor. Due to the lack of accurate models that reflect the biological characteristics of primary tumors, studying MPM remains challenging and is associated with an exceedingly unfavorable prognosis. This study was aimed to establish a new potential preclinical model for MPM using patient-derived MPM organoids (MPMOs) and to comprehensively evaluate the practicality of this model in medical research and its feasibility in guiding individualized patient treatment...

Asbestosis, defined as diffuse pulmonary fibrosis caused by inhalation of asbestos fibers, occurs after heavy exposures to asbestos dust over several decades. Because workplace exposures have been significantly curtailed since the banning of asbestos in insulation products, we were interested in examining the clinicopathological characteristics of cases diagnosed in the 21st century. The consultation files of one of the authors (VLR) were reviewed for cases of asbestosis diagnosed since 1/1/2001. 102 cases were identified, with a median age of 75 years (range: 45-89)...

CONTEXT.—: Molecular testing has increasingly been utilized in the evaluation of mesothelioma. Diffuse mesothelioma comprises multiple distinct genetic subgroups. While most diffuse mesotheliomas lack oncogenic kinase mutations and instead harbor alterations involving tumor suppressors and chromatin regulators, a minor subset of tumors is characterized by uncommon alterations such as germline mutations, genomic near-haploidization, ALK rearrangement, ATF1 rearrangement, or EWSR1::YY1 fusion...

Mesothelial tumours of the testicular/paratesticular region are uncommon, poorly characterised and difficult-to-diagnose lesions. They encompass entirely benign proliferations (adenomatoid tumour) and malignant, very aggressive tumours (mesothelioma) whose morphological features can be overlapping, highly variable and confounding. Moreover, testicular/paratesticular mesothelial tumours comprise relatively new entities with indolent behaviour (well-differentiated papillary mesothelial tumour) as well as tumours which cannot be correctly included in any of the aforementioned categories and whose classification is still controversial...

The lesions involute spontaneously in the postpartum period; therefore it usually doesn't require any therapeutic interventions. This condition could induce anxiety to surgeons intra-operatively, because of resemblance of more sinister lesions such as: carcinomatosis and granulomas...

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPeM) is a rare malignancy with historically poor prognosis. Recent research has started to reveal increasingly prevalent genetic mutations seen in this malignancy. Here, we report a case of complete clinical remission of unresectable, metastatic MPeM with systemic chemotherapy. Immunohistochemistry of our patient's malignant cytology sample showed loss of Breast Cancer Gene 1-associated protein-1 expression (BAP1). The patient had synchronous diagnoses of primary squamous cell carcinoma of the anus, benign schwannoma and meningioma...

This analysis updates two previous analyses that evaluated the exposure-response relationships for lung cancer and mesothelioma in chrysotile-exposed cohorts. We reviewed recently published studies, as well as updated information from previous studies. Based on the 16 studies considered for chrysotile (<10% amphibole), we identified the "no-observed adverse effect level" (NOAEL) for lung cancer and/or mesothelioma; it should be noted that smoking or previous or concurrent occupational exposure to amphiboles (if it existed) was not controlled for...

BACKGROUND Malignant mesotheliomas are rare, yet highly malignant tumors. Mesotheliomas are tumors that develop from mesothelial surfaces, with the pleura being the most common, followed by the peritoneum. The diagnosis of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) is usually established when the disease is advanced, owing to the nonspecific clinical appearance and abdominal symptoms. Initially, MPM was treated with palliative systemic chemotherapy, with or without palliative surgery. However, cytoreductive surgery (CRS) combined with bidirectional intraoperative chemotherapy (BDIC) has recently emerged as a treatment option for MPM...

AIM: Diagnosis of mesothelioma in situ (MIS) is historically controversial and, until recently, specific features defining the entity have not been well characterized. Most reported cases of MIS occurred in the pleura; peritoneal MIS is very rare. This study investigates the morphologic features and results of ancillary testing in peritoneal MIS. METHODS: We present three patients with peritoneal MIS, as defined by a single layer of mesothelial cells with loss of nuclear BRCA-1-associated protein-1 (BAP1) immunostaining and without evidence of invasive tumour by microscopic evaluation, imaging, or direct examination of the peritoneum...
