occlusal cranial balancing technique

J Ferri
Orthognathic surgery is a surgical technique that provides normalization of the face and occlusion. Some malocclusions are particularly unstable, such as maxillary transversal deficits, and anterior open bite. Many factors are implicated in the stability of surgical results. Indeed, facial balance largely depends on functions that could be the cause of unstable results, despite a good anatomical correction. Breathing, swallowing, chewing disorders and more largely alteration of the functional matrix may be sources of instability...

The acronym for Occlusal Cranial Balancing Technique is OCB. The OCB concept is based on the architectural principle of a level foundation. The principles of Occlusal Cranial Balancing are a monumental discovery and if applied will enhance total body function.

Cases of occlusal asymmetry detected in the temporary dentition are frequently associated with skeletal asymmetries of the cranial base. They should be corrected as soon as possible. Symmetry of these dental groups is achieved with the use of mini-screws implanted in designated sectors of the hard palate. When a new occlusal plane derived from the corrected maxilla is obtained, the mandible will re-center itself in relation to it. As a result cranial bones can remodel and the possibility of induced temporo-mandibular disorders is greatly reduced...

A new technique of osteotomy distraction osteogenesis (ODO) and sutural distraction osteogenesis (SDO) by the use of bone-borne traction hooks is presented. The technique of osteotomy plus distraction osteogenesis is suitable for adult patients. The technique of sutural distraction osteogenesis is suitable for young patients, ages 6 through 12 years. The distraction system consists of a face-bow, orthodontic elastics, and bone-borne traction hooks. The bone-borne traction hooks are made of titanium, with two traction hooks running laterally or downwardly...

Vascular interventions are important and helpful for treatment of various pathologies of the head and neck. Interventional neuroradiology of the head and neck includes image-guided biopsies, vessel occlusion, and local chemotherapy. Knowledge of anatomy, functional relationships between intra- and extracranial vessels, and pathology are the basis for therapeutic success. The interventional neuroradiologist is responsible for appropriate selection of patients based on clinical information, indications, and risk assessment...

PURPOSE: This study evaluates the biomechanical consequences of physiologic forces acting on the frontozygomatic suture region, with the ultimate goal of defining appropriate fixation techniques and improving the surgical management of this complex anatomic region. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Single foil strain gauges were bonded to the cortical surface of the frontal process of the zygoma in 13 subadult Cercopithecus africanus. Subdermal electrodes were used to induce tetanic contractions of the jaw elevator muscles, and bite force was measured using a twin-beam bite force transducer placed between the teeth...
