AIM: The aim of this comprehensive review is to present an update to our previous review about drug-induced oral reactions. All drugs that may cause adverse effects in the mouth and related structures are reviewed. BACKGROUND: Every drug can produce untoward consequences even when used according to standard or recommended methods of administration. Adverse drug reactions can involve every organ and system of the body and are frequently mistaken for signs of underlying disease...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and compare the oral hygiene and periodontal status in children with unilateral and bilateral cleft lip and palate treated in Łódź, Poland, and Erlangen, Germany. DESIGN: Oral health was assessed by the presence of dental plaque, pocket depth, clinical attachment levels, and pathologic teeth mobility. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Thirty-seven Polish and 63 German patients participated in this study. RESULTS: Poor oral hygiene was found in 57% of all subjects...

This five-year prospective study demonstrates prosthetic treatment by multidisciplinary therapy: surgeon, orthodontist, and prosthodontist. 10 patients volunteered for the study (a group of 7 men and 3 women at an average age of 33.2 years). 10 obturators, 49 fixed dentures were inserted to the upper jaw. Based on ADA (American Dental Association) recommendation a special card was prepared containing relevant information on the patients. Clinical assessments were carried out in accordance with the US Public Health Service System...

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to demonstrate the clinical applicability of limited cone beam computed tomography (Dental 3D-CT) for assessment of bone-grafted alveolar cleft. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seventeen bone bridges were examined after alveolar bone grafting in 13 patients with cleft lip and palate. All bone bridges, including cleft-adjacent teeth, were examined by plain radiography and the Dental 3D-CT imaging system. RESULTS: The plain radiographs showed the approximate condition of the bone bridge and cleft-adjacent teeth...

This paper gives general information on the location of Kenya, its demography, economy, organisation of health services, general health policy, health financing, oral health infrastructure, problems that hamper health financing and proposals on how to solve these problems. Further, a summary of health status of the Kenyan people is given based on the results of studies. The mean DMFT for the rural and urban populations is low and there is no evidence of an increase or decrease. Similarly, the prevalence of periodontitis is low (1-10%), with no increase...

BACKGROUND: Complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) is a hereditary or multifactorial malformation that can be corrected successfully with a combined orthodontic, surgical and restorative treatment. Such multidisciplinary treatment takes many years and demands a lot of attention to both patients' teeth and periodontium. OBJECTIVES: This split-mouth study aimed to compare the periodontal health as well as the microbial parameters between cleft and non-cleft region...

Every drug can produce untoward consequences, even when used according to standard or recommended methods of administration. Adverse drug reactions can involve every organ and system of the body and are frequently mistaken for signs of underlying disease. Similarly, the mouth and associated structures can be affected by many drugs or chemicals. Good oral health, including salivary function, is very important in maintaining whole body health. Regarding different parts of the oral system, these reactions can be categorized to oral mucosa and tongue, periodontal tissues, dental structures, salivary glands, cleft lip and palate, muscular and neurological disorders, taste disturbances, drug-induced oral infection, and facial edema...

Tobacco represents the single most preventable cause of disease and death in the world today. Of 260 million male deaths in the developed world between 1950 and 2000, it is estimated that 50 million will be due to smoking. In the oral and craniofacial region tobacco use has been associated with the occurrence of cleft palate, periodontal disease and tooth loss, and a variety of soft tissue lesions including oral cancer. For example, smoking is estimated to account for 92% of cancers of the lip, oral cavity and pharynx...

The process undertaken to establish an initial pilot index for restorative dental treatment is described. Following consultation with a wide range of clinicians and others, an outline framework for the index was developed and comprised three main components: 1. Patient identified need for treatment: the data from the patient perceived need questionnaire were inconclusive; 2. Complexity of treatment (assessed by clinicians): this was found to be a practical tool capable of being used by a range of dentists. A booklet has been produced which describes the process of using the scoring system; 3...

G Semb, T Ramstad
The introduction of mixed dentition bone grafting of alveolar clefts means that the alveolar process can be fully restored, permitting adjacent teeth to migrate or be orthodontically moved into the grafted bone. Thus a complete dental arch can be obtained without prosthodontics in the great majority of patients. In addition, oral-nasal fistulae are closed, mucosal recesses eliminated (facilitating oral hygiene) and the long-term periodontal health of the teeth adjacent to the former cleft is improved. Alveolar bone grafting with subsequent orthodontic treatment, together with advances in dental materials, have contributed substantially to the care of patients with alveolar clefts, reducing the need for prosthodontic procedures and allowing completion of the dental treatment at an earlier age...

OBJECTIVE: Long-term health of the stomatognathic system as well as esthetic aspects are the therapeutic goals in patients with orofacial clefts. The aim of this study was to analyze the periodontal condition of patients with cleft palate (CP) and cleft lip, palate, and alveolus (CLP) and to determine the differing degrees and localization of periodontal disease. DESIGN: In 30 patients with unilateral cleft lip, palate, and alveolus and 30 patients with cleft palate (CP), periodontal lesions were identified and classified according to the Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN) and pathological mobility of teeth was noted...

BACKGROUND: Long-term health of the stomatognathic system, as well as esthetics, is the therapeutic goal in patients with facial clefts. The aim of this study was to analyze the periodontal situation of patients with cleft palate (CP) and cleft lip, palate, and alveolus (CLPA) to elicit the differing degrees and localization of periodontal disease. METHODS: In 30 patients with unilateral cleft lip, palate, and alveolus (UCLPA), 30 patients with cleft palate (CP), and 20 patients with bilateral cleft lip, palate, and alveolus (BCLPA), the gingival situation was identified and classified according to the sulcus bleeding index (SBI)...

A review of the studies of the caries prevalence and periodontal health of patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP) revealed that only five investigations of caries prevalence in CLP patients included children. One reported that CLP children did not have a higher caries prevalence in the permanent dentition, whereas more recent studies have reported a higher caries prevalence in both the primary and permanent dentitions of CLP children than in those of noncleft children. However, there is wide variation in the teeth examined and the method of presenting data on caries prevalence...
