Normal intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) ranges from 0 to 5, and abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) occurs when a sustained IAP >20 mmHg causes organ dysfunction. ACS mainly occurs in patients who are critically ill. It occurs due to an injury or disease in the abdomen or pelvic area, including trauma, abdominal surgery, acute pancreatitis, pancreatic ileus, volvulus, fecal impaction, and ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. If not recognized early, ACS leads to multiorgan dysfunction, shock, and sepsis and has high morbidity and mortality...

BACKGROUND: Extensive drainage of peatlands in the southeastern United States coastal plain for the purposes of agriculture and timber harvesting has led to large releases of soil carbon as carbon dioxide (CO2 ) due to enhanced peat decomposition. Growth in mechanisms that provide financial incentives for reducing emissions from land use and land-use change could increase funding for hydrological restoration that reduces peat CO2 emissions from these ecosystems. Measuring soil respiration and physical drivers across a range of site characteristics and land use histories is valuable for understanding how CO2 emissions from peat decomposition may respond to raising water table levels...

We examined the impact of total body irradiation (TBI) dose and fractionation on risk of subsequent malignant neoplasms (SMNs) in the era of reduced-intensity and nonmyeloablative conditioning regimens for hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). Among 4905 1-year survivors of allogeneic HCT for hematologic malignancies (N = 4500) or nonmalignant disorders (N = 405) who received transplants between 1969 and 2014, we identified 581 SMNs (excluding squamous and basal cell of skin) in 499 individuals. With a median length of follow-up of 12...

Limiting climate warming to <2°C requires increased mitigation efforts, including land stewardship, whose potential in the United States is poorly understood. We quantified the potential of natural climate solutions (NCS)-21 conservation, restoration, and improved land management interventions on natural and agricultural lands-to increase carbon storage and avoid greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. We found a maximum potential of 1.2 (0.9 to 1.6) Pg CO2 e year-1 , the equivalent of 21% of current net annual emissions of the United States...

Better stewardship of land is needed to achieve the Paris Climate Agreement goal of holding warming to below 2 °C; however, confusion persists about the specific set of land stewardship options available and their mitigation potential. To address this, we identify and quantify "natural climate solutions" (NCS): 20 conservation, restoration, and improved land management actions that increase carbon storage and/or avoid greenhouse gas emissions across global forests, wetlands, grasslands, and agricultural lands...

Quasi-experimental methods increasingly are used to evaluate the impacts of conservation interventions by generating credible estimates of counterfactual baselines. These methods generally require large samples for statistical comparisons, presenting a challenge for evaluating innovative policies implemented within a few pioneering jurisdictions. Single jurisdictions often are studied using comparative methods, which rely on analysts' selection of best case comparisons. The synthetic control method (SCM) offers one systematic and transparent way to select cases for comparison, from a sizeable pool, by focusing upon similarity in outcomes before the intervention...

In this work, we investigate the ability to tune the quantity of surface amine functional groups in the interfacial region of epoxy-diamine composites using NEXAFS, a technique that is extremely sensitive to surface composition. Thereby, we employ a model surface (silicon wafer with the native oxide present) and, after deposition of an epoxy functionalized silane, we immersed the wafers in various diamines, followed by reaction with a diepoxy acting as a molecular probe. These results show that the number of available surface amines depends on the diamine chosen, wherein smaller molecular weight diamines provide more reaction sites...

Current national and international guidelines for patients with acute coronary syndromes mostly refer to the results of randomised clinical trials. However, these results usually include low-risk patients, while patients with higher risk, such as patients after resuscitation, with cardiogenic shoch or renal insufficiency are excluded. Therefore are the results of randomised trial not necessarily applicable to the every days clinical practice patients. This gap can be filled by prospective registries. Since the 1990 s such registries have been performed in Germany...

A comprehensive otoneurological investigation of 131 patients with head injuries of shoch-wave and mechanical nature has revealed similar acoustic, vestibular and central hemodynamic disorders in the above patients. The diagnosed pathological features are determined only by strength and extention of the traumatic factor but not by its nature. Common features in development of acoustic and vestibular disorders in patients with different head injuries enable design of an integrated therapeutic and diagnostic algorithm of management of the above patients with the drugs tanakan and gincor fort...
