OBJECTIVE: Increased dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) activity and reduced brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in peripheral circulation are both associated with a high risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in the elderly. Hence, we aimed to investigate the association between plasma DPP4 activity to BDNF ratio (DBR) and MCI in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes. DESIGN AND METHODS: We measured plasma DPP4 activity, BDNF levels, oxidative stress parameters, inflammatory markers and calculated DBR in 1833 elderly type 2 diabetic patients aged 60 years or older...

Our study evaluated the levels of peroxide oxidation of lipids, oxidative modification of proteins, antioxidant protection and dynamic changes in markers of toxicity in patients with diabetes mellitus and purulent-inflammatory complications. In total, 124 patients were enrolled in the study and were divided into two groups according the treatment methods. Study group consisted of 53 patients, who received intravenously ozonized saline in addition to conservative treatment. The control group consisted of 71 patients who received only conventional therapy...

The treatment of diabetic patients with pyonecrotic lesions in the lower extremities requires prolonged reflexo-segmental balneophysiotherapy to normalize functions of the nerve centres. Curative volcanic mud solutions (15-24 g/l) enriched with organic and nonorganic biologically active compounds from volcanic deposits in Azerbaijan were used for the first time to treat such patients. Peloids were applied to the lumbar region (location of sympathetic nerve nodes) and the lower legs above and beneath the affected sites...

BACKGROUND/AIM: [corrected] Oxidative stress plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of various diseases. Recent reports indicate that obesity may induce systemic oxidative stress. The aim of the study was to potentiate oxidative stress as a factor which may aggravate peripheral insulin sensitivity and insulinsecretory response in obesity in this way to potentiate development of diabetes. The aim of the study was also to establish whether insulin-secretory response after glucagonstimulated insulin secretion is susceptible to prooxidant/antioxidant homeostasis status, as well as to determine the extent of these changes...

The AA. have carried out researches into the results of the platelets aggregation test (PAT) on 375 people by use of the Born method; they have employed ADP and a commercial available cephalin (Thrombofax, Ortho). In the first case the parameters taken into consideration are: the minimum dose of ADP able to cause a "double wave aggregation", the slope and the maximum increase in light transmission; in the second case the parameters considered are: the latency period, the maximum speed and the maximum amplitude...

Rodents have been used by many investigators for studies of the effects that maternal diabetes during pregnancy may have on developing fetuses. In Wistar rats, the induction of mild chronic diabetes at the onset of pregnancy by alloxan or streptozotocin results in abnormalities of the nervous system and the heart, recognized in embryos at 11--13 days' gestation. Thus, early organogenesis is evidently affected in these embryos. With a method which enables rat embryos to be cultured in vitro in serum for the period of their early organogenesis, the growth and differentiation of embryos from normal and from diabetic rats can be observed in some detail...
