PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Current knowledge on the role of platelets and platelet-derived microparticles (PMPs) on the immune system has been fast-growing. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a systemic auto-immune disorder characterized by a loss of tolerance toward nuclear auto-antigens. Although recent studies allowed a better understanding of SLE pathogenesis, there is an urgent need for the development of new treatments and the identification of new biomarkers to assess the disease activity...

BACKGROUND: There is interest about the role of platelet (PLT) number and function in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NAFLD patients have abnormalities of PLT number and function, especially mean platelet volume (MPV) which is known as a novel biomarker for atherosclerosis. We decided to compare PLT number and function between NAFLD and healthy participants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this case-control study, two groups of patients (65 cases with NAFLD and 65 cases without NAFLD) were included consecutively...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Parameters derived from complete blood count such as mean platelet volume (MPV), neutrophil to lymphocyte (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte (PLR) are recently proposed as measures of inflammation in addition to C-reactive protein (CRP), a classical inflammatory marker. Significant association of these parameters with atherosclerosis and complications have increasingly been reported. Our aim is to evaluate relationship between these parameters and presence of myocardial viability assessed with positron emission tomography (PET) in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy...

In patients with muscular dystrophies both muscle length tension relationship changes and muscle elasticity and plasticity are decreased, resulting in impaired inspiratory muscle function and decreased vital capacity. Furthermore, the loss of deep breathing further increases the risk of alveolar collapse, hypoventilation and atelectasias. In this case report, a stable improvement of vital capacity after treatment with mounthpiece ventilation (MPV), was observed, suggesting that not invasive ventilation (NIV) might help to maintai lung and chest wall compliance, prevent hypoventilation and atelectasias which in turn may slow down the development of the restrictive respiratory pattern...

BACKGROUND: In patients with coronary artery disease, coronary collateral circulation (CCC) develops as an adaptation to ischemia and contributes toward reduction of cardiovascular events. Recently, the mean platelet volume-to-lymphocyte ratio (MPVLR) has emerged as a novel and readily available marker of inflammation and thrombosis. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between MPVLR and development of CCC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 332 patients with stable angina pectoris undergoing coronary arteriography were enrolled and divided on the basis of the development of CCC into two groups: group with adequate CCC (n=243) and group with impaired CCC (n=89)...

The last decade has witnessed an explosion in the depth, variety, and amount of human genetic data that can be generated. This revolution in technical and analytical capacities has enabled the genetic investigation of human traits and disease in thousands to now millions of participants. Investigators have taken advantage of these advancements to gain insight into platelet biology and the platelet's role in human disease. To do so, large human genetics studies have examined the association of genetic variation with two quantitative traits measured in many population and patient based cohorts: platelet count (PLT) and mean platelet volume (MPV)...

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) have been extensively used in industry, medicine, and daily life, and have shown potential toxic effects for animals or humans. We noted that the effects of TiO2 NPs on the immune system and its mechanism of action in animals or humans have not been elucidated. Thus, mice were exposed to the TiO2 NPs (0, 1.25, 2.5, or 5 mg kg(-1) body weight) for 9 consecutive months. Exposure to TiO2 NPs was accumulated in the thymus, leading to a decrease in body weight and increases in the weight of the thymus or thymus indices...
