Spontaneous bile duct rupture is a rare condition in adults, with only 70 cases reported. Increased bile duct wall pressure may lead to rupture and biliary peritonitis. In this patient, the bile duct ruptured in the hepatic left triangular ligament. A 91-year-old man underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography for choledocholithiasis and endoscopic retrograde biliary drainage (ERBD) placement. One week later, removal of the ERBD and common bile duct stones and an endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST) were performed...

Intersigmoid hernia is a rare clinical entity. Only 6 cases of laparoscopic repair for intersigmoid hernia have been reported since 1977. We herein report such a case, which was successfully diagnosed preoperatively and treated with laparoscopic repair. A 50-year-old man with a chief complaint of abdominal pain and vomiting was admitted for the treatment of small bowel obstruction. The patient had no history of abdominal surgery. Computed tomography showed a dilated small bowel and a closed loop of small bowel dorsal to the sigmoid colon and the sigmoid mesocolon...

In the present study, the morphological development of the Brycon amazonicus digestive tract is described to provide basic knowledge for nutritional studies and, therefore, increase the survival of this species during larviculture. Samples were collected from hatching up to 25 days of age, measured, processed and observed under a stereomicroscope and light microscopy. Newly hatched larvae presented their digestive tract as a straight tube, dorsal to the yolk sac, lined with a single layer of undifferentiated cells...

Stomach is the most dilated part of the digestive tube. The shape of the stomach could vary frequently without any clinical symptoms. Abnormality of pylorus including double pylorus and congenital pyloric stenosis has been reported but pyloric ectopic opening has not been reported before. We found a rare case of pyloric ectopic opening in the stomach body with a "hammer" shape stomach in a 72-year-old man. The patient complained of upper left abdominal with no past medical history or surgery history. The double-contrast examination showed a "hammer" shape stomach, with the pylorus opening high at the lesser curvature and enlarged distal end of the stomach...

BACKGROUND: The advent of balloon-assisted enteroscopy (BAE) has facilitated the examination of the entire digestive tract. However, using a rigid sliding tube during the procedure reduces patient acceptance. This study evaluated the clinical application of a newly developed ultrathin single-balloon enteroscope for BAE. METHODS: 28 outpatients underwent enteroscopy with a novel ultrathin single-balloon enteroscope. None of the subjects required therapeutic procedures, such as balloon dilation or hemostasis...

OBJECTIVE: To present and discuss the endoscopic and histological results, as well as the incidence of Helicobacter pylori and other diseases, indications and characteristics of upper digestive endoscopies performed in children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-five endoscopies were performed in children aged six months to 11 years (mean 7.69 years), from February 2013 to January 2016. In 200 patients, endoscopies were diagnostic and serial biopsies were performed (esophagus, stomach and duodenum), in 120 of them...

In patients with ileus with dilated intestine in imaging studies, endoscopic decompression appears a feasible option. However, its use is often uncritical and without scientific evidence. Before considering endoscopic intervention, CT-imaging should differentiate between mechanical obstruction and paralytic ileus/intestinal pseudo-obstruction. Tumor diagnosis and localisation are essential because the latter determines the choice of the decompression procedure. Coecal dilatation of more than 12 cm indicates an increased risk of perforation...

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Complete gastrointestinal strictures are a technically demanding problem. In this setting, an anterograde technique is associated with a high risk of complications and a combined anterograde-retrograde technique requires a prior ostomy. Our aim was to assess the outcome of a first case series for the management of complete gastrointestinal strictures using endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided puncture as a novel endoscopic approach. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective case-series describes four cases that were referred for treatment of complete benign gastrointestinal strictures, three upper and one lower...

Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is an idiosyncratic, potentially life-threatening skin disease characterized by widespread inflammation and necrosis of the epidermis and mucous membranes. It may result in narrowing of the esophageal lumen through fibrosis and esophageal stricture in rare situations, mostly encountered in children. To the best of our knowledge, we report the first case of esophageal stricture secondary to allopurinol-induced TEN in an adult patient. A 70-year-old male presented to our clinic with severe dysphagia secondary to allopurinol-induced TEN involving his mouth and esophagus...

Endoscopy has an ever-increasing role in the treatment of complications in digestive surgery. Endoscopic treatment is essentially used for (i) fistula or intra-abdominal collection secondary to anastomotic dehiscence and (ii) anastomotic stricture, especially esophagogastric, but also sometimes after colorectal surgery. First intention treatment of fistula following esophagogastric surgery is the insertion of an extractable self-expandable metallic stent (partially or entirely covered); this is supported by a low level of scientific evidence, but clinical experience has been satisfactory...

Minimally invasive surgical techniques are becoming increasingly popular within the pediatric population. Flexible endoscopy may enhance or replace existing techniques in the future. Many of the reported benefits of laparoscopy and thoracoscopy may apply to endoscopy and endoscopy-assisted procedures; however, no reports exist as to the application, results, and outcomes for these procedures in children. It was hypothesized that endoscopy is a useful and safe adjunct for pediatric surgical patients. Retrospective review of medical records for patients who underwent endoscopy or endoscopy-assisted operations at two children's hospitals over 3 years (August 31, 2007-August 31, 2010) was completed...

Congenital short colon, more commonly known as pouch colon, is a rare anomaly that can be encountered with anorectal malformations (ARM).
