Equine herpesvirus type 8 (EHV-8) causes abortion and respiratory disease in horses and donkeys, leading to serious economic losses in the global equine industry. Currently, there is no effective vaccine or drug against EHV-8 infection, underscoring the need for a novel antiviral drug to prevent EHV-8-induced latent infection and decrease the pathogenicity of this virus. The present study demonstrated that hyperoside can exert antiviral effects against EHV-8 infection in RK-13 (rabbit kidney cells), MDBK (Madin-Darby bovine kidney), and NBL-6 cells (E...

Highly critical reviews of medical books are rarely encountered in our age, but this was not always the case. I provide an example of a very negative review of an early medical book that may have blocked the author from further publication.Papers published in reputable journals are subjected to review by experts, whose task is to find weakness in research and/or flaws in its arguments. Published reviews of textbooks that appear these days are generally laudatory, calling attention to the strengths of the book with little mention of any shortcomings...

Sickle cell disease is a condition that can involve numerous organ systems secondary to vascular occlusion. Herein, we present a case of a 21-year-old male with sickle cell disease requiring long-term hydroxyurea therapy. Upon migrating to the United States from Yemen, the patient developed a rapidly progressive, exquisitely painful ulcer on his right lower extremity. Given his country of origin, a broad differential, including select infectious diseases, was essential. Moreover, establishing the unequivocally correct diagnosis was crucial to determine proper and safe therapy...

Cheilitis, or inflammation of the lips, is a common reason for dermatologic consultation. The inflammation can include the vermillion lip, vermillion border, and surrounding skin, and can present with an acute or chronic course. There are many etiologies, including irritant and allergic contact dermatitis, atopic cheilitis, actinic cheilitis, infectious etiologies, nutritional deficiencies, drug-induced cheilitis, and rare etiologies, including granulomatous cheilitis, cheilitis glandularis, plasma cell cheilitis, lupus cheilitis, and exfoliative cheilitis...

The injectability of cross-linked hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers is influenced by polymer concentration, polymer cross-linking type and degree, the presence of lidocaine or other functional excipients, types of syringes, and injection techniques. Finished product injectability constitutes a critical quality attribute for clinical injectors, as it strongly influences product applicability and ease of use in aesthetic medicine. While injectable product extrusion force specifications are provided by the respective device manufacturers, the qualitative informative value of such datasets is low for injectors wishing to compare product brands and technologies from an injectability standpoint...

Phytophotodermatitis are skin eruptions caused by contact with a plant substance and exaggerated by exposure to sunlight. They are due to the presence of furocoumarins (psoralens, xanthotoxins, and bergaptenes) in the plant and involve 2 mechanisms of skin photosensitivity: phototoxicity or photoallergy.
