Peripheral venous hypertension has emerged as a prominent characteristic of venous disease (VD). This disease causes lower limb edema due to impaired blood transport in the veins. The phlebotonic drugs in use showed moderate evidence for reducing edema slightly in the lower legs and little or no difference in the quality of life. To enhance the probability of favorable experimental results, a virtual screening procedure was employed to identify molecules with potential therapeutic activity in VD. Compounds obtained from multiple databases, namely AC Discovery, NuBBE, BIOFACQUIM, and InflamNat, were compared with reference compounds...

BACKGROUND: The Epitomee Capsule (EC) is an, oral, self-use, bio-degradable device for weight management, composed of absorbent polymers that self-expands in the stomach (pH-sensitive) and creates a triangular shape, space-occupying super-absorbent gel structure. A recent study reported that 42 % of study completers obtained >5 % weight reduction at 12 weeks. We performed exploratory analyses of this study to evaluate its effect on cardiovascular risk factors and on self-reported satiety, between-meal snacking and meal-size...

Puccinia coronata f. sp. avenae ( Pca ) is the causal agent of the disease known as crown rust which represents a bottleneck in oat production worldwide. Characterisation of pathogen populations often involves race (pathotype) assignments using differential sets, which are not uniform across countries. This study compared virulence profiles of 25 Pca isolates from Australia using two host differential sets, one from Australia and one from the USA. These differential sets were also genotyped using DArT sequencing technology...

Chiranthodendron pentadactylon Larreat is a tree native to southeastern Mexico and Guatemala. Its flower is used in Mexican folk medicine to treat a variety of diseases, including conditions of blood pressure. However, scientific information on its usefulness in this pathology is lacking. The present study evaluates the effect of a methanolic extract (ME) from the flower and its active constituents on heart rate (HR) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) in anesthetized rats (MAPHR). The study also analyzed the effects on rat-isolated aortic rings (RIAR) and the rat mesenteric arterial bed (MABR)...

Flies groom in response to competing mechanosensory cues in an anterior to posterior order using specific legs. From behavior screens, we identified a pair of cholinergic command-like neurons, Mago-no-Te (MGT), whose optogenetic activation elicits thoracic grooming by hind legs. Thoracic grooming is typically composed of body sweeps and leg rubs in alternation, but clonal analysis coupled with amputation experiments revealed that MGT activation only commands the body sweeps: initiation of leg rubbing requires contact between leg and thorax...

Many natural products have been acquired from plants for their helpful properties. Medicinal plants are used for treating a variety of pathologies or symptoms. The axes of many pathological processes are inflammation, oxidative stress, and senescence. This work is focused on identifying Mexican medicinal plants with potential anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, and anti-senescence effects through network analysis and chemoinformatic screening of their phytochemicals. We used computational methods to analyze drug-like phytochemicals in Mexican medicinal plants, multi-target compounds, and signaling pathways related to anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, and anti-senescence mechanisms...

Achieving price efficiency via tenders, the sustainability of competition, and the prevention of shortages are hot topics in the debates about shaping the pharmaceutical markets. Single-winner tenders receive growing criticism for concentrating on achieving low prices at the expense of the long-term maintenance of a competitive pharmaceutical industry, the security of continuous supply, and disregarding the therapeutic needs of patient populations with specific conditions. This paper aims at drafting a concept to assist the design of multi-winner tenders for medicinal products with a focus on supply and sales guarantees, price efficiency, and equity in access...

Biodiversity loss is a major global challenge and minimizing extinction rates is the goal of several multilateral environmental agreements. Policy decisions require comprehensive, spatially explicit information on species' distributions and threats. We present an analysis of the conservation status of 14,669 European terrestrial, freshwater and marine species (ca. 10% of the continental fauna and flora), including all vertebrates and selected groups of invertebrates and plants. Our results reveal that 19% of European species are threatened with extinction, with higher extinction risks for plants (27%) and invertebrates (24%) compared to vertebrates (18%)...

The human population is expanding at an exponential rate, and has created a great surge in the demand for food production. To intensify the rate of crop production, there is a tremendous usage of chemical pesticides and fertilizers. The practice of using these chemicals to enhance crop productivity has resulted in the degradation of soil fertility, leading to the depletion of native soil microflora. The constant application of these hazardous chemicals in the soil possesses major threat to humans and animals thereby impacting the agroecosystem severely...

BACKGROUND: Different prognostic scales exist in patients with brain metastasis, particularly in lung cancer. The Graded Prognostic Assessment for lung cancer using molecular markers (Lung-molGPA index) for brain metastases is a powerful prognostic tool that effectively identifies patients at different risks. However, these scales do not include perilesional edema diameter (PED) associated with brain metastasis. Current evidence suggests that PED might compromise the delivery and efficacy of radiotherapy to treat BM...

In clonally reproducing dikaryotic rust fungi, non-sexual processes such as somatic nuclear exchange are postulated to play a role in diversity but have been difficult to detect due to the lack of genome resolution between the two haploid nuclei. We examined three nuclear-phased genome assemblies of Puccinia triticina, which causes wheat leaf rust disease. We found that the most recently emerged Australian lineage was derived by nuclear exchange between two pre-existing lineages, which originated in Europe and North America...

AbstractInjuries from failed suicide attempts account for a large number of patients cared for in the emergency and trauma setting. While a fundamental underpinning of clinical ethics is that patients have a right to refuse treatment, individuals presenting with life-threating injuries resulting from suicide attempts are almost universally treated in this acute care setting. Here we discuss the limitations on physician ability to determine capacity in this setting and the challenges these pose in carrying out patient wishes...

Chronic exposure to low concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as chlorobenzene, is not being monitored in industrializing countries, although VOC exposure is associated with carcinogenic, organ-toxic, and endocrine-disrupting effects. Current VOC-sensing technologies are inaccessible due to high cost, size, and maintenance or are ineffective due to poor sensitivity or reliability. In particular, marginalized individuals face barriers to traditional prescription VOC treatments due to cost, lack of transportation, and limited access to physicians; thus, alternative treatments are needed...

Antibiotic resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa remains one of the most challenging phenomena of everyday medical science. The universal spread of high-risk clones of multidrug-resistant/extensively drug-resistant (MDR/XDR) clinical P. aeruginosa has become a public health threat. The P. aeruginosa bacteria exhibits remarkable genome plasticity that utilizes highly acquired and intrinsic resistance mechanisms to counter most antibiotic challenges. In addition, the adaptive antibiotic resistance of P. aeruginosa , including biofilm-mediated resistance and the formation of multidrug-tolerant persisted cells, are accountable for recalcitrance and relapse of infections...
