BACKGROUND: A new generation of enhanced monofocal IOLs has been introduced to slightly increase the depth of focus as compared to standard monofocal IOLs. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of pupil size on the through-focus optical performance of three new enhanced monofocal IOLs, designed to improve the range of vision as compared to standard monofocal IOLs. METHODS: Optical bench testing in white light was performed for different pupils, using an average cornea eye...

Suicidal ideation (SI) often precedes and predicts suicide attempt and death, is the most common suicidal phenotype and is over-represented in veterans. The genetic architecture of SI in the absence of suicide attempt (SA) is unknown, yet believed to have distinct and overlapping risk with other suicidal behaviors. We performed the first GWAS of SI without SA in the Million Veteran Program (MVP), identifying 99,814 SI cases from electronic health records without a history of SA or suicide death (SD) and 512,567 controls without SI, SA or SD...

This study quantifies golf course pesticide risk in five regions across the US (Florida, East Texas, Northwest, Midwest, and Northeast) and three countries in Europe (UK, Denmark, and Norway) with the objective of determining how pesticide risk on golf courses varied as a function of climate, regulatory environment, and facility-level economic factors. The hazard quotient model was used to estimate acute pesticide risk to mammals specifically. Data from 68 golf courses are included in the study, with a minimum of at least five golf courses in each region...

The emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron sublineages resulted in increased transmission rates and reduced protection from vaccines. To counteract these effects, multiple booster strategies were used in different countries, although data comparing their efficiency in improving protective immunity remain sparse, especially among vulnerable populations, including older adults. The inactivated CoronaVac vaccine was among the most widely distributed vaccine worldwide and was essential in the early control of SARS-CoV-2-related hospitalizations and deaths...

Improvement in biometry and formulas have raised the bar for accurate IOL power calculation. However, when we look closely at the performance of a specific IOL model, we often find that the prediction error varies with the implant power. This phenomenon has no explanation other than the optic design of the IOL has shifted over the power range, thereby disrupting the assumptions of the calculations. By this report we call the industry to be more transparent and disclose the basic information about the IOL design that is important for accurate IOL power calculation...

The acute decline in global biodiversity includes not only the loss of rare species, but also the rapid collapse of common species across many different taxa. The loss of pollinating insects is of particular concern because of the ecological and economic values these species provide. The western bumble bee ( Bombus occidentalis ) was once common in western North America, but this species has become increasingly rare through much of its range. To understand potential mechanisms driving these declines, we used Bayesian occupancy models to investigate the effects of climate and land cover from 1998 to 2020, pesticide use from 2008 to 2014, and projected expected occupancy under three future scenarios...

The claustrum is a small subcortical structure with widespread connections to disparate regions of the cortex. However, the impact of the claustrum on cortical activity is not fully understood, particularly beyond frontal areas. Here, using optogenetics and multi-regional Neuropixels recordings from over 15,000 cortical neurons in awake mice, we demonstrate that the effect of claustrum input to the cortex differs depending on brain area, layer, and cell type. Brief claustrum stimulation, producing approximately 1 spike per claustrum neuron, affects many fast spiking (FS; putative inhibitory) but relatively fewer regular-spiking (RS; putative excitatory) cortical neurons and leads to a modest decrease in population activity in frontal cortical areas...

For more than half a century, researchers around the world have been engaged in attempts to achieve fusion ignition as a proof of principle of various fusion concepts. Following the Lawson criterion, an ignited plasma is one where the fusion heating power is high enough to overcome all the physical processes that cool the fusion plasma, creating a positive thermodynamic feedback loop with rapidly increasing temperature. In inertially confined fusion, ignition is a state where the fusion plasma can begin "burn propagation" into surrounding cold fuel, enabling the possibility of high energy gain...

INTRODUCTION: To compare the mortality of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 between those that required supplemental oxygen and received dexamethasone with a comparable set of patients who did not receive dexamethasone. METHODS: We utilized the Premier Health Database to identify hospitalized adult patients with COVID-19 from July 1, 2020-January 31, 2021. Index date was when patients first initiated oxygen therapy. The primary endpoint was in-hospital mortality for patients receiving dexamethasone versus those not receiving dexamethasone 1-day pre- to 1-day post-index period...

PURPOSE: To compare the accuracy of postoperative residual astigmatism prediction using the Barrett toric calculator with predicted versus measured posterior corneal astigmatism (PCA). SETTING: Cullen Eye Institute, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. METHODS: We included 602 eyes with monofocal non-toric IOL implantation. Biometry and PCA were obtained from the IOLMaster 700. Anticipated postoperative refractive astigmatism was calculated with the Barrett toric calculator for predicted and measured PCA, and the astigmatism prediction errors (PEs) for each were calculated using vector analysis...

PURPOSE: To provide a method for determining the vector that, when added to the preoperative astigmatism, results in no prediction error (PE) and to specify statistical methods for evaluating astigmatism and determining the 95% confidence convex polygon. SETTING: Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, and University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California. DESIGN: Retrospective consecutive case series. METHODS: An analysis of 3 clinical trials involving toric intraocular lenses was performed...

The immunostimulatory intracellular domains (ICDs) of chimaeric antigen receptors (CARs) are essential for converting antigen recognition into antitumoural function. Although there are many possible combinations of ICDs, almost all current CARs rely on combinations of CD3𝛇, CD28 and 4-1BB. Here we show that a barcoded library of 700,000 unique CD19-specific CARs with diverse ICDs cloned into lentiviral vectors and transduced into Jurkat T cells can be screened at high throughput via cell sorting and next-generation sequencing to optimize CAR signalling for antitumoural functions...

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the DFT015 intraocular lens (IOL) (AcrySof IQ Vivity Extended Vision), compared with an aspheric monofocal control IOL (AcrySof IQ model SN60WF). SETTING: Eleven investigation sites in the United States. DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, controlled clinical study. METHODS: Patients aged ≥22 years with bilateral cataracts were randomized to receive bilateral implantation of DFT015 or SN60WF...
