BACKGROUND: Anamorelin is a selective ghrelin receptor agonist approved for cancer cachexia in Japan. Little is known about predictors of anamorelin efficacy. This study aimed to assess the effect of diabetes on the efficacy and safety of anamorelin in patients with cancer cachexia. METHODS: Medical records of patients with advanced non-small-cell lung, gastric, pancreatic, or colorectal cancer who received anamorelin between January 2021 and March 2023 were retrospectively reviewed...

BACKGROUND: Mature cystic teratomas or dermoid cysts of the pancreas complicate surgical approaches because of their anatomical position and ever-growing size. Herein, we report a case of a giant mature cystic teratoma of the pancreas that was successfully resected via complete laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy (LDP). CASE PRESENTATION: A 39-year-old female patient was referred to our hospital for the evaluation of a pancreatic tumor. Three years of follow-up revealed that the tumor had increased in size to 18 cm, with hyperintense solid components on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging...

AIM: To explore the global burden of pancreatic cancer (PC) from 1990 to 2019, evaluate independent effects of age, period, and cohort on the incidence of PC, and predict the incidence of PC in the next decade. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. We calculated the age-standardized disability-adjusted life years (DALY) rate, age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR), age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), and age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR) of PC...

The purpose of this review was to analyze the scientific literature on exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) in dogs and cats and our own research on porcine model to compare animal- and microbial-derived enzymes in the treatment of animals with this disease. Clinical signs of EPI occur when more than 85% of the pancreatic parenchyma is non-functional. EPI can be a consequence of various diseases. The insufficient activity or deficiency of pancreatic enzymes leads to impaired digestion and absorption, and consequently, to malnutrition...

In mild cases, it is difficult to diagnose pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI). There is no gold standard method for the diagnosis of PEI. A reliable method is needed for preliminary diagnosis of PEI. The PEI-TEST was applied to the patients with nonspecific gastrointestinal complaints. Serum amylase, lipase, serum trypsinogen, and fecal elastase 1 (FE-1) were analyzed from each patient. According to the PEI-TEST, PEI was present in 42 (47.7%) and PEI was not present in 46 (52.3%) patients. No significant difference was observed between the 2 groups with regard to age, gender and amylase, lipase, serum trypsinogen, and FE-1...

INTRODUCTION: Blocking the colony-stimulating factor 1 (CSF-1) signal on tumor-associated macrophages can lead to an upregulation of checkpoint molecules, such as programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1), thus causing resistance to this blockade. Combining spartalizumab (PDR001), a high-affinity, ligand-blocking, humanized anti-PD-1 immunoglobulin G4 antibody, with lacnotuzumab (MCS110), a high-affinity, humanized monoclonal antibody directed against human CSF-1 can potentially overcome this resistance...

During the COVID-19 pandemic, excess deaths including cancer have become a concern in Japan, which has a rapidly aging population. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate how age-adjusted mortality rates (AMRs) for different types of cancer in Japan changed during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2022). Official statistics from Japan were used to compare observed annual and monthly AMRs with predicted rates based on pre-pandemic (2010-2019) figures using logistic regression analysis. No significant excess mortality was observed during the first year of the pandemic (2020)...

A 63-year-old woman presented with hypokalemia, hypertension, weight gain, limb edema, and tremors. She was diagnosed with Cushing syndrome, with a 24-hour urine cortisol level of 41,013 nmol/day. Investigations revealed a grade 2 pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor with extensive hepatic metastases. Owing to excessive adrenocorticotropic hormone production from her disease, her hypercortisolemia and Cushing symptoms worsened despite ketoconazole, somatostatin analogs, and right liver lobe chemoembolization. Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) at a dose of 39 Gy in three fractions was administered to her bilateral adrenal glands in the hope of reducing her cortisol levels and improving her symptoms...

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) is a non-invasive method to measure the viscoelastic properties of tissue and has been applied in multiple abdominal organs. However, abdominal MRE suffers from detrimental breathing motion causing misalignment of structures between repeated acquisitions for different MRE dimensions (e.g., motion encoding directions and wave phase offsets). This study investigated motion correction strategies to resolve all breathing motion on sagittal free-breathing MRE acquisitions in a phantom, in healthy volunteers and showed feasibility in patients...

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic mucinous adenocarcinoma (PMAC) is a rare malignant tumour, and there is limited understanding of its epidemiology and prognosis. Initially, PMAC was considered a metastatic manifestation of other cancers; however, instances of non-metastatic PMAC have been documented through monitoring, epidemiological studies, and data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the epidemiological characteristics of PMAC and discern the prognostic differences between PMAC and the more prevalent pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC)...

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic cancer (PC) is a lethal disease, especially metastatic PC. And it can be divided into two types: head pancreatic cancer (H-PC) and body and tail pancreatic cancer (BT-PC). Prior studies have proved that they have different overall survival (OS) and should be regarded as two different categories of PC. At present, there remains a gap in the field regarding OS across different primary tumor locations and metastatic sites, as well as the metastatic patterns associated with various primary tumor locations in patients with metastatic PC...

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a collection of metabolic disorder that is characterized by chronic hyperglycemia. Recent studies have demonstrated the crucial involvement of oxidative stress (OS) and inflammatory reactions in the development of DM. Curcumin (CUR), a natural compound derived from turmeric, exerts beneficial effects on diabetes mellitus through its interaction with the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) pathway. Research indicates that CUR targets inflammatory mediators in diabetes, including tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), by modulating the NF-κB signaling pathway...

METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 332 patients who underwent HR for HCC with PVTT at ten tertiary referral hospitals in South Korea...
