BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Several randomized controlled trials have not shown any added benefit of arthroscopy over placebo surgery or physiotherapy in middle-aged patients with knee symptoms without trauma. We studied the characteristics of the knee arthroscopies performed in southern Sweden. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From the orthopedic surgical records from 2007-2009 in the Skåne region of Sweden (with a population of 1.2 million), we retrieved ICD-10 diagnostic codes and selected all 4,096 arthroscopies that were diagnosed peroperatively with code M23...

AIM: Tumor dissemination, lymphnode involvement and surgical resection technique are the most important factors affecting patient prognosis with gastric cancer. Peritoneal dissemination adversely affects the survival rate in patients. Microscopic peritoneal dissemination can be detected with peritoneal lavage cytological examination. Peroperatively detected microscopic peritoneal dissemination changes the treatment plan for patients and can be useful when selecting patients who should undergo adjuvant chemotherapy...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Local infiltration analgesia (LIA) is well established for effective postoperative pain relief in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). To prolong the effect of LIA, infusion pumps with local intraarticular analgesia can be used. We evaluated the effect of such an infusion pump for the first 48 h postoperatively regarding pain, knee function, length of stay (LOS) in hospital, and complications. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 200 patients received peroperative LIA and a continuous intraarticular elastomeric infusion pump set at 2 mL/h...

BACKGROUND: Medicinal leech therapy is effective in establishing venous outflow in congested flaps and replants. However, its use is also associated with infections, especially from Aeromonas species. To prevent this nosocomial infection, levofloxacin has been established as prophylaxis during leech therapy in our hospital. OBJECTIVES: To study the implementation rate of a guideline, to study the effect of levofloxacin on possible Aeromonas infections, and to evaluate the financial impact of this preventive measure...

Endometrial cancer (EC) is the most common malignancy of the female reproductive tract and is increasing in incidence. Lymphovascular invasion and lymph node (LN) status are strong predictive factors of recurrence. Therefore, the determination of the nodal status of patients is mandatory to optimally tailor adjuvant therapies and reduce local and distant recurrences. Imaging modalities do not yet allow accurate lymph node staging; thus pelvic and aortic lymphadenectomies remain standard staging procedures. The clinical data accumulated recently allow us to define low- and high-risk patients based on pre- or peroperative findings that will allow the clinician to stratify the patients for their need of lymphadenectomies...

INTRODUCTION: Ultrasound of the neck is a sovereign complementary imaging method suitable for determining morphological changes in thyroidology which uses the so-called B-mode two-dimensional images for the neck area that are complemented by duplex Doppler imaging. Diagnostic verification is performed by sonographists from among radiologists and endocrinologists providing regular outpatient care; the surgeon uses ultrasound for navigation to attain the focus to be operated on. Sonography will provide information on the structure of the thyroid, of the parathyroids, their relationship to the surrounding organs (location, size, relationship to breathing and swallowing pathways)...

The growing success of isotopic explorations in oncology is related to the number of growing radiotracers and progress in the methods for detection and imaging. Today, the nuclear medicine is able to answer important questions raised by biology and therapeutic progress results from this. The new radiopharmaceutical compounds are able to explore in vivo the metabolism, the proliferation, the hypoxia and the expression of some receptors or antigens in tumor cells. This progress in radiopharmaceuticals design can be combined with the new tools for detection, such as the cameras coupled to a tomodensitometer (TEMP-TDM and TEP-TDM), the new gamma cameras with semiconductors, and the peroperative gamma probes...

BACKGROUND: Thyroid nodules are relatively rare in children and adolescents and have a prevalence between 0.2%-1.8%. They are more often malignant in children than in adults and thus an early diagnosis is extremely important. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to analyze the group of pediatric patients with nodular thyroid diseases. METHODS: The authors processed the documentation of 66 pediatric patients with nodular thyroid disease who have been surgically treated at the Clinic of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, JFM CU and MFH in Martin during 2003-2007...

Sclerosing therapy has in recent studies showed promising results in patients with clinically and ultrasonographically diagnosed tendinosis in Achilles and patellar tendons. The aim of this investigation was to study the presence of intratendinous colour Doppler (CD) flow in horses with clinically diagnosed chronic tendinopathy and to test if experience from human studies could be extrapolated to horses. Special interest was focused on the treatment with sclerosing therapy and whether we could obtain the same successful peroperative findings as in humans...
