Traditional medical practice among the Igbo is not limited to therapeutic or curative role of healing the sick. It extends to exploration and manipulation of powers inherent in nature and material entities to achieve some ends. This is popularly known as ime ọgwụ ( igwọ ọgwọ ) in Igbo parlance. One of such manipulative function is the phenomenon of postponement or transfer of death from a patient to another individual without any direct or physical contact. The process raises serious philosophical concerns about causation as well as the ethical justification of the act...

Bereavement is an extremely personal feeling, but Japanese society tends to disapprove of displays of negative personal emotion or weakness. For ages, mourning rituals like funerals provided an exception where social permission was given to sharing grief and seeking support. However, the form and significance of Japanese funerals have changed rapidly over the past generation, and especially since the advent of COVID-19 restrictions on assembly and travel. This paper overviews the trajectory of changes and continuities in mourning rituals in Japan, looking at their psychological and social impacts...

INTRODUCTION: Antisocial personality disorder (AsPD) is a pervasive pattern of violation of others' rights, related to the concept of psychopathy. AsPD is stable over time from adolescence, with evidence of conduct disorder (CD) before 15 years. DSM-5 included a specifier 'with limited prosocial emotions' (LPE), which characterizes adolescents with higher developmental vulnerability to develop AsPD. Despite being relatively frequent with considerable societal impact, AsPD is a difficult-to-treat condition with high comorbidity rates and poor evidence for effective pharmacological interventions...

In this article, we examine primetime television as a source of entertainment-education on death. Using directed (deductive) and conventional (inductive) approaches to content analysis, we describe how death and dying are being depicted on two primetime medical television series, Grey's Anatomy and Saving Hope. We then discuss what kinds of information viewers may be taking from these series. Our deductive content analysis suggests that much of the messages obtained are fairly representative of what occurs in real hospital settings, with the exception of emotional display...

A narrative systematic review was conducted to review studies that examine mental health implications of involvement in assisted-death services among health practitioners. Qualitative and quantitative studies were included to understand health practitioners' attitudes and experiences with assisted dying services, as well as to identify the mental health consequences. We identified 18 articles from 1591 articles drawn from seven major scientific databases (i.e., PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus)...

Epidemiological estimates of substance use disorders (SUD) are critical for the planning of evidence-informed intervention and services. In this study, 250 incarcerated individuals in Nigeria were interviewed with the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Inventory (MINI) to diagnose SUD and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). Most of the participants were males (97.6%), and the mean age was 35.4 (SD=13.5) years. Substance use disorder and ASPD were prevalent in 57.6% and 11.2% of the participants, respectively...

INTRODUCTION: Priapism is defined as a prolonged penile erection in absence of sexual arousal, leading also to serious sexual and urological problems such as erectile dysfunction and penile fibrosis. Amongst many different etiologies, priapism may be caused by a wide range of antipsychotic medications, mainly due to the α1-adrenergic receptor antagonism. On the other hand, only a couple of cases of opioid compounds have been linked to the onset of priapism, with evidence coming only from methadone and buprenorphine...

Our nationwide postal survey analyzing 190 responses from Japanese bereaved who had responded a year earlier found that funeral dissatisfaction rose during the second year after the funeral. Controverting previous research advocating participation in funeral planning, elderly bereaved spouses forced to decide about and/or pay for the funeral showed elevated grief as much as 2 years later. While not reaching levels diagnosed as prolonged, traumatic, or complicated grief, nevertheless one out of three of our bereaved sample showed continuing daily symptoms of grief from 14 to 24 months after their bereavement, with continued or increasing use of tranquillizers or antidepressants...

Permanent supportive housing (PSH) is long-term affordable housing with onsite social services. End-of-life care (EOLC) involves a discussion about the type of medical care an individual hopes to receive at the end of their life. This qualitative study examines the goals, desires, and expectations for EOLC for people living in PSH. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 formerly homeless residents in four PSH facilities in San Francisco, California and analyzed using the framework method. The interviews reveal how an individual's experience with housing precarity and with the PSH setting shape their preferences and expectations for the end of life...

Introduction: Psychiatric comorbidity has been detected in one-third of bipolar patients. The illness itself may be a precipitating factor for developing substance use and anxiety disorders. Comorbid anxiety disorders with bipolar disorder (BD) are associated with decreased chances of recovery, poorer role functioning, and quality of life, and greater likelihood of suicide attempts. Hence, identifying comorbid symptoms in remitting patients has important preventive and therapeutic implications...

Alcohol use behaviors are highly heterogeneous, posing significant challenges to etiologic research of alcohol use disorder (AUD). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides intermediate endophenotypes in characterizing problem alcohol use and assessing the genetic architecture of addictive behavior. We used connectivity features derived from resting state functional MRI to subtype alcohol misuse (AM) behavior. With a machine learning pipeline of feature selection, dimension reduction, clustering, and classification we identified three AM biotypes-mild, comorbid, and moderate AM biotypes (MIA, COA, and MOA)-from a Human Connectome Project (HCP) discovery sample (194 drinkers)...
