Recently, epidemiologic studies have shown that the lack of vitamin D levels may be associated with high asthma prevalence, but its effect is still controversial, depending on season, area, and food consumption. We aimed to examine the association of serum vitamin D levels with the prevalence of pediatric asthma in Korea. A total of 80 children (50 asthmatic children and 30 healthy controls) aged 6-14 years were participated in this study. Serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D (vitamin D) levels were measured and compared between the two groups...

Methods: A multicenter, large sample, ambispective cohort study, with registration-type clinical safety monitoring. A total of 6 188 inpatients and patients from the emergency units, aged ≤ 14 years who all had been using Tanreqing injection in 59 secondary and tertiary hospitals in China, were recruited between January, 2014 and May, 2015. The main outcomes would include incidence and severity of adverse drug reaction (ADR)/adverse drug event (ADE) of Tanreqing injection...

Methods: Data on HIV/AIDS between 2009 and 2015 were derived from the Shandong provincial HIV/AIDS Comprehensive Response Information Management System at the end of 2015. All the data were geographically referenced based on 139 spatial units in the related counties of Shandong province. Electronic maps were obtained from China CDC. Global Moran' s I statistics and LISA statistics were used to detect the global and local spatial distribution patterns of HIV/AIDS in Shandong...

Objective: To understand the epidemiological characteristics and influencing factors related to HBeAg sero-clearance in chronic hepatitis B patients so as to provide evidence for regular management on chronic HBV patients. Methods: From 2012 to 2014, a cohort study was conducted among HBeAg positive chronic HBV patients in Jiangsu province. Association between the characteristics and incidence of HBeAg sero-clearance was analyzed by Cox regression method. The changing trend on HBV DNA between patients with HBeAg sero-clearance and those with persistent HBeAg positive status was compared by repeated measure data variance analysis method...

BACKGROUND: Patients with thrombophilia and/or a history of venous thromboembolism (VTE) are at risk of thrombosis during pregnancy. A risk score for pregnancies with increased risk of VTE was previously described by our group (Lyon-VTE-score). OBJECTIVES: The aim of this prospective study was to assess the efficacy and safety of our score-based prophylaxis strategy in 542 pregnancies managed between 2005 and 2015 in Lyon University Hospitals. PATIENTS/METHODS: Of 445 patients included in the study, 36 had several pregnancies during the study period...

AIM: The aim of this study was to elicit the perceptions of patients, who self-tested their INR and communicated their results via a text or phone messaging system, to determine their satisfaction with the education and support that they received and to establish their confidence to move to self-management. BACKGROUND: Self-testing of INR has been shown to be reliable and is fast becoming common practice. As innovations are introduced to point of care testing, more research is needed to elicit patients' perceptions of the self-testing process...

Loneliness in later life is a common problem with poor health outcomes. However, interventions to prevent or ameliorate loneliness have a weak evidence base. The views of older people experiencing or at risk of loneliness in the community are important in identifying features of potential support, but have been little studied. Twenty-eight community dwelling people, aged 65 and over who reported being 'lonely much of the time' or identified as lonely from the de Jong Gierveld six-item loneliness scale in a larger study, participated in in-depth interviews, between June 2013 and May 2014...

Objective The objective of this study was to observe the efficacy of antiemetic therapy (no emesis/retching episodes and no rescue medication use) when granisetron is administered via a transdermal patch system (TDS) in women who are 6 to 14 weeks pregnant when compared with oral ondansetron by evaluating the frequency of the use of rescue medications for control of nausea/vomiting of pregnancy (NVP). Methods This was an observational case series study to observe the potential benefits of granisetron TDS compared with oral ondansetron for management of NVP in pregnant patients during the first trimester...

2-Phenylethanol (2-PE) is an aromatic alcohol with a rosy scent which is widely used in the food, fragrance, and cosmetic industries. Promising sources of natural 2-PE are microorganisms, especially yeasts, which can produce 2-PE by biosynthesis and biotransformation. Thus, the first challenging goal in the development of biotechnological production of 2-PE is searching for highly productive yeast strains. In the present work, 5 laboratory Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains were tested for the production of 2-PE...

C-arm cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) acquisition during endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) is an emergent technology with more and more applications. It offers real time imaging with a stationary patient and provides 3-D information to achieve guidance of intervention. However, there is growing concern on the overall radiation doses delivered to patients all along the endovascular management due to pre-, intra-, and post-operative X-ray imaging. Manufactures may have their low dose protocols to realize reduction of radiation dose, but CBCT with a low dose protocol has too many artifacts, particularly streak artifacts, and decreased contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR)...

Urban parks play a key role in the provision of ecosystem services, actively participating in improving the quality of life and welfare of local residents. This paper reports on the application of an index designed to quantify the allergenicity of urban parks in a number of Spanish cities. The index, which records biological and biometric parameters for the tree species growing there, classifies parks in terms of the risk they pose for allergy sufferers, graded as null, low, moderate or high. In this initial phase, the index was applied to 26 green areas in 24 Spanish cities; green areas varied in type (urban park, historical or modern garden, boulevard, square or urban forest), size 1-100 ha), geographical location, species richness, number of trees and tree density (number of trees / ha...

Identification of alarming features in the electrocardiogram (ECG) signal is extremely significant for the prediction of congestive heart failure (CHF). ECG signal analysis carried out using computer-aided techniques can speed up the diagnosis process and aid in the proper management of CHF patients. Therefore, in this work, dual tree complex wavelets transform (DTCWT)-based methodology is proposed for an automated identification of ECG signals exhibiting CHF from normal. In the experiment, we have performed a DTCWT on ECG segments of 2s duration up to six levels to obtain the coefficients...

BACKGROUND: The potential role of drugs in the onset of panic attacks (PAs) is poorly understood. AIM: The objective of our study was to characterize drug-induced PAs. METHOD: We performed an analysis of PAs registered in the French pharmacovigilance database between 01/01/1985 and 05/11/2014. RESULTS: Among the 163 recorded cases, 136 (83.4%) were directly related to drugs, mainly antidepressants (11.3%, mainly serotonin reuptake inhibitors), mefloquine (7...

OBJECTIVE: Continuous EEG (cEEG) monitoring of critically ill patients has gained widespread use, but there is substantial reported variability in its use. We analyzed cEEG and antiseizure drug (ASD) usage at three high volume centers. METHODS: We utilized a multicenter cEEG database used daily as a clinical reporting tool in three tertiary care sites (Emory Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Yale - New Haven Hospital). We compared the cEEG usage patterns, seizure frequency, detection of rhythmic/periodic patterns (RPP), and ASD use between the sites...

OBJECTIVES: Researchers in nursing science interested in the study of nurse-patient and nurse-relative interactions have displayed an ever increasing interest in ethnomethodology and conversation analysis. This review assesses the scope of this literature. We categorize the papers in thematic categories determined both inductively and deductively and synthesize the main findings of this literature within category. Finally we discuss the interactional determinants of the lack patient participation, the limitations of the field, and focus on implications...
