Mesenteric Panniculitis (MP) is predominately a disease of the small bowel of unknown etiology. Characterized by Fibrosis and chronic inflammation of fatty tissue of the mesentery in the small bowel. It is commonly diagnosed based on computed tomography (CT scan) with IV contrast and biopsies in equivocal cases. We conducted a retrospective study from 2011 to 2020. We analyzed the medical records of 40 patients with Mesenteric Panniculitis. The most common presentation was vague abdominal symptoms. We successfully managed the patients medically with prednisone, azathioprine, colchicine, or a combination...

Aim: To briefly discuss the imaging features of different types of intra-abdominal fat necrosis. Background: Trauma and ischemic insult may result in intra-abdominal fat necrosis. Fat necrosis may present with acute abdomen, clinically simulating with other etiologies, such as acute diverticulitis and acute appendicitis. Main body: Imaging plays a crucial role in making the exact diagnosis and differentiating it from other pathologies that may require surgical intervention...

Mesenteric panniculitis (MP) is the preferred nomenclature for a continuum of inflammatory diseases of the mesentery. The diagnosis of MP is often based on the appearance of a mass-like structure at the root of the mesentery. Characteristic histology includes focal fat necrosis, chronic inflammation, and sometimes mesenteric fibrosis. At present, robust literature related to diagnosis and management of MP are limited. MP is postulated to be an immune-mediated chronic inflammatory and/or a paraneoplastic disease...

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the prevalence of cardiovascular risk-factors in patients with mesenteric panniculitis. AIMS: To determine whether cardiovascular risk-factors and mesenteric panniculitis are associated. METHODS: Retrospective, matched case-control study of patients referred to Meir Medical Center, Israel, 2014-2019, who underwent computerized tomography scan, were diagnosed mesenteric panniculitis by radiologic criteria. They were compared to two, matched case-control groups: hospitalized patients without mesenteric panniculitis and the general population based on Israeli Ministry of Health surveys...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify abdominal computed tomography (CT) features associated with underlying malignancy in patients with mesenteric panniculitis (MP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This single-institution retrospective longitudinal cohort study included patients with MP and a minimum 1-year abdominopelvic CT follow-up or 2-year clinical follow-up after initial abdominopelvic CT examination. Two radiologists, blinded to patients' medical records, conjointly reviewed CT-based features of MP...

Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare benign inflammatory process involving mesenteric adipose tissue and the pathogenesis is still unknown. It may present 18 Fluorine-fluorodeoxyglucose (18 F-FDG) uptake and appear like a malign tumor or metastatic disease. We report a case of 47 year-old woman with serous ovarian adenocarcinoma demonstrating intense 18 F-FDG uptake and hyperdense nodularity in mesenteric fatty tissue on post-chemotherapy positron emission tomography/computed tomography imaging. The serum tumor marker (CA-125) level was within the normal range...

Mesenteric panniculitis is encountered frequently during abdominopelvic CT scanning, often as an incidental finding. The observation is problematic because an association with malignancy has been raised in the literature. This review will describe the CT appearances and examine the available evidence regarding the significance of this finding.Ultimately, the literature remains unclear regarding how these patients should be managed, if at all.

BACKGROUND: Mesenteric panniculitis (MP) is a non-specific, localized inflammation at the mesentery of small intestines which often gets detected on computed tomography. An association with malignant neoplasms remains unclear. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the association of malignancy with MP. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases were searched for articles published from inception to 2020 that evaluated the association of malignant neoplasms with MP in comparison with control groups...

Rheumatoid arthritis is a relatively common chronic inflammatory disorder affecting the synovial joints. Extra-articular manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis are not uncommon and include a wide range of cardiovascular, pulmonary, and neurological complications. Gastrointestinal involvement in rheumatoid arthritis is rare, but it can be impactful on the quality of life of patients. We present the case of a 45-year-old woman, with rheumatoid arthritis on methotrexate, who presented with a one-week history of abdominal pain...

In malignant mesotheliomas, cases involving the peritoneum as the primary site are rare, accounting for approximately 10% of all mesothelioma cases. We report a case of medical-type peritoneal mesothelioma leading to death 2 months after the onset of fever of unknown origin, along with a review of the literature. A 76-year-old man presented with a fever of unknown origin over 4 weeks. Thoracoabdominal computed tomography (CT) scan showed increased mesenteric adipose tissue density. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) scan showed diffuse hyperaccumulation in the mesentery and hyperaccumulation in the intraperitoneal and parasternal lymph nodes...

Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare disease caused by idiopathic inflammation of adipose tissue, most commonly affecting the mesentery of the small bowel. We present a unique case of mesenteric panniculitis in a patient with Tangier disease; a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in the ABCA1 gene, leading to deficiency of high-density lipoprotein in the blood and accumulation of cholesterol esters within various tissues. The accumulation of cholesterol esters in body tissues in patients with Tangier disease may contribute to the pathogenesis of mesenteric panniculitis; although there is limited evidence to support this hypothesis due to the rarity of concurrent disease...

Idiopathic sclerosing mesenteritis (ISM) is an extremely rare condition in which mesenteric adipose tissue undergoes necrotic and fibrotic changes. It is also known as "retractile mesenteritis", "mesenteric panniculitis" or "fat necrosis of the mesentery". Most cases are seen in Caucasian males between the fifth and seventh decades of life. Some of the suggested causes of this extremely rare condition include autoimmune disorders, abdominal trauma, malignancy, abdominal infections and even IgG4-related diseases; however, the actual cause remains unknown...

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease with potential multisystemic involvement. Mesenteric panniculitis (MP) has been described as a rare feature in patients with SLE. The authors present a case of a 26 years old patient with previous diagnosis of SLE presenting with abdominal pain and distension and a peri-umbilical mass. Imagological findings were compatible with MP and ganglion biopsy revealed inflammatory pattern. Corticosteroid therapy was initiated with a resolution of pain after 6 months of treatment, with image reevaluation showing improvement of previous findings...

Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare, slowly progressive, benign, and chronic fibrous inflammatory disease that affects the adipose tissue of the mesentery. In the present study, we aim to investigate its clinical presentations, computed tomography/sonography scan features, effectiveness of the treatment, and overall prognosis. We investigated various presentations, etiologies, diagnostic approaches, potential treatment modalities, and overall prognosis of mesenteric panniculitis. We present one case of mesenteric panniculitis with abdominal pain, which underwent steroid treatment regimens subsequently and gained weight moderately...
