OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical characteristics and maternal and infant prognosis of severe precocious preeclampsia complicated with fetal growth retardation. METHODS: A study was conducted for 126 patients with early onset severe preeclampsia. According to the gestational week (GW) of morbility, they were divided into group A (GW<28, n = 36), group B (28 ≤ GW<32, n = 40) and group C (32 ≤ GW<34, n = 50). And then compare the respective clinical characteristics and the result of mother and infant...

We report on a case of autoimmune thyroiditis in a 6-month-old patient with cortico-resistant nephrotic syndrome. Normal serum levels of thyroid hormons and thyroid-stimulating hormone were detected with high titers of circulant antithyroid antibodies and a dysomogeneous ultrasound appearance of the gland, typical of autoimmune thyroiditis. The research of maternal thyroid antibodies was negative. This is the first case of autoimmune thyroiditis found in such a young patient with pre-existing nephrotic syndrome ever described in literature...

AIM: Mirror syndrome is a triad consisting of fetal hydrops, maternal edema and placentomegaly. Its pathogenesis is unclear and it is frequently mistaken for preeclampsia, even though distinguishing features can be identified. It is associated with an increase in fetal mortality and maternal morbility. METHODS: We report an uncommon case of mirror syndrome, which appeared late in pregnancy (38 weeks) in a young nulliparous and characterized by sudden and massive vulvar edema, with placentomegaly and hydramnios but without fetal hydrops...

BACKGROUND: Biliary pathology is the second cause of abdominal acute pain during pregnancy. The surgical approach most often used for the treatment of acute cholecystitis during pregnancy is laparoscopy. Some aspects have made this approach during pregnancy controversial. OBJECTIVES: To analyze the maternal-fetal benefits and complications of laparoscopic cholecystectomy during pregnancy and compare these results with the medical literature. MATERIAL AND METHODS: It is a retrospective, transverse study...

Preeclampsia is a multifactorial disease of unknown ethiology and definitive treatment is delivery. Before, the tendency was to avoid maternal complications, for what the pregnancy was interrupted without caring the fetal conditions. For some decades, the expectant handling has been preferred with the purpose of prolonging the pregnancy so that it matures the fetus and diminish the consequences on the perinatal morbility and mortality. There are divergent opinions on carrying out it in an ambulatory or hospital way...

Respiratory pathology can be relatively frequent during pregnancy. One third of pregnant woman may experience worsening of their asthma condition. Pulmonary tromboembolism is 5 times more frequent in pregnancy. Bacterial, viral and fungal pneumonias are badly tolerated during pregnancy, provoking mother-foetal morbidity, respiratory insufficiency, low born-weight or prematurity. Non-treated tuberculosis may increase maternal mortality and preterm birth by 4 and 9 times respectively. Pregnancy is counter-indicated in women with cystic fibrosis and severe pulmonary function...

The HELLP syndrome is a serious pregnancy complication which has an important multiorgan involvement with a consequent high rate of maternal and perinatal morbility and mortality. 36 patients admitted to the Hospital "Umberto I" in Frosinone have been included in our study. For every patient have been analyzed anamnestic data, symptomatology, therapy, complicances, delivery method, the neonatal outcome and the average time of hospital stay. In order to protect the mother and the fetus and at the same time to prevent the progression of the disease it is recommended to deliver after the 34 weeks' gestation...

OBJECTIVES: Hypertension in pregnancy is connected with increased rate of prematurity and perinatal morbility. 8-isoprostane and lipid peroxides are the oxidative stress indices, similar to the prostaglandins both connected with vessels restriction. DESIGN: The aim of the study was to find the correlation between concentration of lipid peroxides and 8-isoprostane and the blood pressure in pregnancy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was done in Dep...

The preeclampsia is the first cause of maternal morbility, with increase in the obstetric complications when it is associated to HELLP syndrome, for the low platelets that even involves to the neonate. This study was carried out in the patients accepted in the intensive Adults Cares Unit in the period of one year, surgical complications and the perinatal results were determined in women with low platelet count for HELLP syndrome in preeclampsia-eclampsia. Three groups were formed according to the platelets account and then were analyzed using chi square to determine association among these groups of patients, as well as mean and standard deviation (M +/- DE) to describe results...

INTRODUCTION: The impaired in the metabolism of the carbohydrates in a previously healthy woman who develops hyperglycemia during the pregnancy is know as gestational diabetes, the maternal-fetal mortality and morbility is almost the same one that a pregnant normal woman, if the metabolic dysfunction is appropriately controlled, the complications can be treated with success if the pregnant one attends prenatal control. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to know the relationship between number of consultations and the hyperglycemia frequency to settle down...

This is an analysis of the characteristics of cesarean section operations within the Ministry of Health (SSA) and the implications in relation to maternal and perinatal mortality during the five year period from 1990 to 1995. A descriptive study was undertaken based on cesarean section information obtained from the Statewide (Reporting) System of Basic Information (SEIR) and based on maternal and perinatal mortality information provided by the Ministry's Internal Hospital Committees from 1990 to 1995. This information was analyzed as a chronological series in order to compare the changes in the annual cesarean rates at both national and statewide levels...

The experience obtained in 44 cases, in which amniocentesis was practiced for genetic diagnostic purpose in the private center in México City is presented. Indications, morbility and results are similar to those reported in the literature, is considered that this method should be offered to the couples who receive information about it and have maternal age 35 or older, antecedent of family chromosomal disease, alteration in maternal serum screening or family anguish. This is a safe method and easy to perform with a high sensibility and specificity, this is the first report in a private center in México that analyzes technique...

BACKGROUND: Delivery methods and current pregnancy monitoring, comparing the last twenty-years in the light of new medical and diagnostic findings are presented. METHODS AND RESULTS: Moreover, examining carefully vaginal and laparotomic delivery it is to be noticed that a more careful wait can increase spontaneous deliveries, with the due exceptions, so that the rate of cesarean section is established on current values. CONCLUSIONS: At last it is to be hoped that maternal mortality and morbility decrease and particularly fetal mortality so as to guarantee a future devoid of psychophysic handicaps to newborn infants...

Pregnancy in a rudimentary uterine horn is rare. Rupture tends to occur in the second trimester, and results in maternal morbility and mortality. Although the diagnosis prior to rupture is difficult, early detection is essential in avoiding a fatal outcome. An asymptomatic case of pregnancy in the rudimentary horn of a bicornuate uterus prior to rupture is presented. This report is to emphasize the important value of sonography for early detection of the prerupture of the rudimentary pregnancy.

A retrospective study on 834 newborns of low birth weight, 2,500 grs., or less over a total of 19,869 live newborns during the year 1973 is presented. They are divided into low birth weight compatible with gestational age and low birth weight for gestational age when birth weight is lower than 10th percentile of Lubchenco's chart. Each of these groups is subdivided in three parts: First part refers to coincidence of frequence of different ethiologic factors or causes of low birth weight (maternal, gestational, placental and termination of pregnancy)...
