BACKGROUND: The Region of Tuscany Health Department was included as an associated member in WP7 "Healthcare" of the European Partnership for Action Against Cancer (EPAAC), initiated by the EU Commission in 2009. AIMS: The principal aim was to map centres across Europe prioritizing those that provide public health services and operating within the national health system in integrative oncology (IO). METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive survey design was used to collect data...

UNLABELLED: Every pathology generally refers to an inadequate response to the influence brought by endo- and exotoxins, which is carried out via natural compensative and protective pathways of the body. Scientific conception of bioregulative therapy and homotoxicology implies treatment by modulation of own protective mechanisms and neutralization of already existing toxins. This endo- and exogenic homotoxins influence on the development of various immune responses of immunocompetent cells...

OBJECTIVE: In breast cancer patients, posttreatment pain often appears after several months and strongly impairs health-related quality of life. Conventional methods of pain reduction are often ineffective. Injection therapy with Traumeel (Heel GmbH, Baden-Baden, Germany), a medication with analgesic properties used in homotoxicology for treatment of the pain associated with trauma as well as a mediator of inflammation, was proposed as an innovative approach for pain relief after breast cancer treatment...

COMMENT
Johan Vande Walle, Erik Van Laecke
In this issue Ferrara et al. present an important placebo-controlled, three-arm, double-blind, double-dummy, study on the treatment of nocturnal enuresis, demonstrating that homotoxicology is superior to placebo but less effective than desmopressin. Nocturnal enuresis is a disease with a heterogeneous aetiology and complex pathophysiology. The fact that different therapies may result in a wide range of responses is, therefore, not surprising. Differences in success rate can, therefore, be largely attributed to selection bias in the sub-populations...

The aim of this trial was to compare the safety and efficacy of homotoxicological remedies versus placebo and versus desmopressin (dDAVP) in the treatment of monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (MNE). We conducted a randomised, double-blind, double-dummy, controlled trial in which 151 children with MNE were randomly assigned to receive oral homotoxicological remedies (n = 50), dDAVP (n = 50) or placebo (n = 51). The primary outcomes were: the reduction of wet nights per week after 3 months of therapy; the evaluation of the numbers and percentages of non-responders and responders; the number of children relapsing after initial response and the number of children attaining 14 consecutive dry nights during the treatment...

OBJECTIVE: Many authors consider surgical therapy of pediatric ranula and intraoral mucocele as the election treatment. Recently, an intracystic sclerosing injection with OK-432 has been proposed as a ranula primary treatment. This preliminary study evaluates the effectiveness of the use of Nickel Gluconate-Mercurius Heel-Potentised Swine Organ Preparations as the primary treatment of pediatric ranula and intraoral mucocele. METHODS: Eighteen children (9 ranulas, 9 labial mucoceles, 2 lingual mucoceles) were treated with oral administration of Nickel Gluconate-Mercurius Heel-Potentised Swine Organ Preparations D10/D30/D200...

Atropa belladonna and Echinacea angustifolia have been used in homeopathy as modulators of inflammatory processes, in simple potency or 'accord of potencies', as recommended by homotoxicology. We evaluated their effects on leukocyte migration and macrophage activity induced by experimental peritonitis in vivo. Mice were injected (i.p.) with LPS (1.0mg/kg) and treated (0.3ml/10g/day, s.c.) with different commercial forms of these medicines. Echinacea angustifolia D4--a simple potency preparation--and Belladonna Homaccord, Belladonna Injeel, Belladonna Injeel Forte, Echinacea Injeel and Echinacea Injeel Forte--all in 'accord of potencies'--were tested...

REVIEW
E Ernst, K Schmidt
AIM: Homotoxicology is a form of therapy that uses homoeopathically diluted remedies with a view of eliminating toxins from the body. It is not a therapeutic method based on accepted scientific principles or biological plausibility. Yet numerous clinical studies have claimed efficacy. The aim of this systematic review is to summarise and critically evaluate the evidence from rigorous clinical trials of this form of therapy. METHODS: Seven electronic databases were searched for all studies of homotoxicological medicines for any human condition...
