Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a widely used plasticizer that is metabolized to mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP). Inhalation is an important exposure route for both phthalates, and their effects on lungs include inflammation, alteration of postnatal maturation (alveolarization), enlarged airspaces and cell differentiation changes, suggesting that alveolar epithelial cells-2 (AEC) are targets of phthalates. This study evaluated the cell progression, epithelial and mesenchymal markers, including surfactant secretion in A549 cells (AEC) that were exposed to DEHP (1-100 µM) or MEHP (1-50 µM) for 24-72 h...

Lactic acid represents an important metabolite that reflects mitochondria function and may further serve as energy source for cancer cells. In light of this physiological and pathological significance, we developed a novel and sensitive gas chromatography method to detect lactic acid in cell culture media. Here, ethyl chloroformate was selected as derivative reagent and the derivatization process was further optimized in terms of number of reagents and reaction time as well as extraction reagents. Under optimal conditions, good linearity was achieved in the tested calibration range...

Insect general odorant binding proteins (GOBPs) have been long thought to bind and transport host plant volatiles to the olfactory receptors on the dendrite membrane of the olfactory neurons. Recent studies indicate that they can also bind female sex pheromones. In present study, two GOBP genes, AipsGOBP1 and AipsGOBP2 were cloned from the adult antennae of Agrotis ipsilon. Tissue expression profiles indicated that both of them are antennae-specific and more abundant in the female antennae than in the male antennae...

The endocrine disruptor di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is used in a variety of consumer products made with polyvinyl chloride and also in the manufacture of medical devices. DEHP disrupts reproductive tract development in an antiandrogenic manner and also may induce neurobehavioral changes. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of chronic postnatal exposure to DEHP (30 mg/kg body weight/day, orally from birth to day 60) on the neuroendocrine regulation of the gonadal axis and its impact on the anxiety-like behavior in adult male rats, as well as the probable participation of the GABAergic system in these effects...

Di-(2-propylheptyl) phthalate (DPHP) is used as a plasticizer for polyvinyl chloride products. A tolerable daily intake of DPHP of 0.2 mg/kg body weight has been derived from rat data. Because toxicokinetic data of DPHP in humans were not available, it was the aim of the present work to monitor DPHP and selected metabolites in blood and urine of 6 male volunteers over time following ingestion of a single DPHP dose (0.7 mg/kg body weight). Concentration-time courses in blood were obtained up to 24 h for DPHP, mono-(2-propylheptyl) phthalate (MPHP), mono-(2-propyl-6-hydroxyheptyl) phthalate (OH-MPHP), and mono-(2-propyl-6-oxoheptyl) phthalate (oxo-MPHP); amounts excreted in urine were determined up to 46 h for MPHP, OH-MPHP, oxo-MPHP, and mono-(2-propyl-6-carboxyhexyl) phthalate (cx-MPHP)...

Several epidemiological and experimental studies indicate a positive association between exposure to formaldehyde or phthalates and allergic asthma. However, nothing is yet known about the effects of exposure to formaldehyde and phthalates together, nor the role of each on allergic asthma. Here, we investigated the effects of a combined exposure to formaldehyde and diisononyl phthalate (DINP) on asthma-like pathology in mice, and determined the underlying mechanisms implicated in NF-κB and ROS. Mice were exposed to formaldehyde and/or DINP and sensitization with OVA...

Phthalates are chemical compounds classified as endocrine disruptors which are present in practically every environment of daily life. In the field of artificial nutrition, they are relevant because they are found as plasticizers in infusion lines made with PVC. They are lipophilic molecules which weakly pair with PVC and, therefore, they are easily extracted by the fatty compounds that are part of both the parenteral and enteral nutrition, as various studies show. As endocrine disruptors, they directly affect the reproductive organs because of their antiandrogenic and estrogenic effects...

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are readily metabolized to phthalate metabolites (mPAEs) in the human body. The occurrence of mPAEs in adult human samples is well documented; however, the maternal-fetal transmission of mPAEs has seldom been studied. In this study, 78 paired maternal-fetal samples, including maternal urine (MU), maternal serum (MS), cord serum (CS), and amniotic fluid (AF), were collected from pregnant women in Tianjin, China. Seven mPAEs were detected in MS, CS and AF, whereas all 11 investigated mPAEs were found in MU...

Di (2‑ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a ubiquitous organic pollutant, which has caused considerable pollution in arable soils. In this study, the relationship between DEHP degradation potential and soil properties in 12 agricultural soils (S1-S12) was examined in a microcosm based experiment. Six of these soils were then selected to monitor patterns in bacterial community responses. It was found that DEHP degradation was positively correlated with bacterial counts in the original soils, suggesting a key role for bacteria in degradation...

Mounting evidence suggests possible adverse effects of intrauterine exposure to certain phenols and phthalates, two classes of endocrine disruptor chemicals, on the developing fetus, with consequences into later life. These findings have contributed to the replacement of some chemicals, such as di‑2‑ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) and bisphenol A (BPA), in consumer products. For the current study we quantified urinary concentrations of biomarkers of exposure among 50 pregnant women in Israel to several phthalates, bisphenols and personal care product chemicals, as well as DEHP and BPA alternatives...

Previous study reported that gestational Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) exposure caused fetal intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). We aimed to investigate the role of placental thyroid hormone receptor (THR) signaling in DEHP-induced IUGR. Dams were treated with DEHP (50 or 200 mg/kg) by gavage daily throughout pregnancy. As expected, gestational DEHP exposure dose-dependently caused fetal IUGR. The mRNA levels of placental Thrα1 and Thrβ1 were reduced and nuclear translocation of placental THRα1 and THRβ1 were suppressed in DEHP-exposed mice even though thyroid hormones in maternal and fetal sera were unaffected...

Di-(2-ethylehxyl) phthalate (DEHP) is one of the most broadly representative phthalic acid esters (PAEs) used as a plasticizer in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) production, and is considered to be an endocrine-disrupting chemical. DEHP and its monoester metabolites are responsible for adverse effects on human health. An efficient DEHP-degrading bacterial strain Rhodococcus ruber YC-YT1, with super salt tolerance (0⁻12% NaCl), is the first DEHP-degrader isolated from marine plastic debris found in coastal saline seawater...

Graphene oxide doping MnFe2 O4 (rGO-MnFe2 O4 ) nanofibers were synthesized via electrospinning method and applied to degrade refractory Di-n-butyl Phthalate (DBP) by catalytic ozonation in the water. Characterizations and effect of various conditions on DBP removal were investigated. Meanwhile, the mechanism of enhanced DBP degradation after rGO incorporation was explored intensively. Results showed that 5 wt% GO doping into MnFe2 O4 improved the concentration of surface hydroxyl sites (SHSC), the oxidation potential, material diffusion and charge electronic transfer ability in contrast to MnFe2 O4 nanofibers, resulting in significantly enhanced DBP degradation compared with ozonation alone...
