We report a comparative study on the activity of a series of five binary catalysts derived from various reported aluminum-based complexes. A benchmarking of their initial rates in the coupling of various terminal and internal epoxides in the presence of three different nucleophilic additives has been carried out providing for the first time a useful comparison of activity metrics in the area of cyclic organic carbonate formation. These investigations provide a useful framework how to realistically valorize relative reactivities and which features are important to consider the ideal operational window of each binary catalyst system...

Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) may be used to upgrade anaerobic digester biogas by directly converting CO2 to CH4 .The objective of this study was to evaluate gas (N2 , CO2 , CH4 , and H2 ) and carbon transport within a methanogenic BES. Four BES configurations were evaluated: abiotic anode with abiotic cathode (AAn-ACa), bioanode with abiotic cathode (BAn-ACa), abiotic anode with biocathode (AAn-BCa), and bioanode with biocathode (BAn-BCa). Transport of N2 , a gas commonly used for flushing anoxic systems, out of the anode headspace ranged from 3...

This article traces the formation of attachment theory to the pioneering research program of Bowlby and his colleagues at the Tavistock Clinic between 1948 and 1956. Through a discussion of the concepts and practices that informed Bowlby's program, I examine the efforts of his team to reconstruct psychoanalytic objects according to preventive objectives and operational criteria. I discuss how the exploratory techniques that Bowlby and his colleagues were developing during these years ultimately led to the establishment of a hybrid investigative framework, in which the prophylactic requirements of mental hygiene, the psychometric model of personality disturbances, the psychoanalytic theory of object relations, and a direct-observational methodology were brought to bear on the problem of the psychological consequences of early separation experiences...

We present a detailed survey of the ongoing destabilization process of the Mosul dam. The dam is located on the Tigris river and is the biggest hydraulic structure in Iraq. From a geological point of view the dam foundation is poor due to a site geology formed by alternating strata of highly soluble materials including gypsum, anhydrite, marl and limestone. Here we present the first multi-sensor cumulative deformation map for the dam generated from space-based interferometric synthetic aperture radar measurements from the Italian constellation COSMO-SkyMed and the European sensor Sentinel-1a over the period 2014-2016 that we compare to an older dataset spanning 2004-2010 acquired with the European Envisat satellite...

Stability and reusability are important characteristics of advanced catalysts for wastewater treatment. In this work, for the first time, sulfate radicals (SO4∙(-)) with a high oxidative potential (E(o) = 2.5-3.1 V) were successfully activated from persulfate by a Fe78Si9B13 metallic glass. This alloy exhibited a superior surface stability and reusability while activating persulfate as indicated by it being used for 30 times while maintaining an acceptable methylene blue (MB) degradation rate. The produced SiO2 layer on the ribbon surface expanded strongly from the fresh use to the 20(th) use, providing stable protection of the buried Fe...

Foldable organic memory on cellulose nanofibril paper with bendable and rollable characteristics is demonstrated by employing initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) for polymerization of the resistive switching layer and inkjet printing of the electrode, where iCVD based on all-dry and room temperature process is very suitable for paper electronics. This memory exhibits a low operation voltage of 1.5 V enabling battery operation compared to previous reports and wide memory window. The memory performance is maintained after folding tests, showing high endurance...

Hybrids consisting of macroscopic superconducting circuits and microscopic components, such as atoms and spins, have the potential of transmitting an arbitrary state between different quantum species, leading to the prospective of high-speed operation and long-time storage of quantum information. Here we propose a novel hybrid structure, where a neutral-atom qubit directly interfaces with a superconducting charge qubit, to implement the qubit-state transmission. The highly-excited Rydberg atom located inside the gate capacitor strongly affects the behavior of Cooper pairs in the box while the atom in the ground state hardly interferes with the superconducting device...

A worldwide increase in the prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus along with accompanying chronic, in particular cardiovascular, complications represents one of the leading challenges of current medicine. Despite major advances in diabetes pharmacotherapy, bariatric surgery remains the most effective treatment of diabetes. It not only markedly decreases body weight and improves glucose control but also induces diabetes remission in a significant percentage of patients. According to current recommendations, bariatric surgery is indicated in patients with 3rd degree obesity (even without any complications) or with 2nd degree obesity with complications (e...

Reported herein is a direct route for chiral β-fluoroamines possessing tetrasubstituted C-F centers through the organocatalytic Mannich reaction of α-fluoro cyclic ketones and α-amidosulfones using a chiral oligoEG as a cation binding catalyst with KF as a base. In most substrates, nearly perfect enantioselectivites were achieved even at very high temperatures (>80 ºC). The salient features of this process include (a) a transition metal free and operationally simple procedure, (b) direct use of α-amidosulfones as bench-stable precursors of sensitive imines, (c) direct enolization of racemic α-fluoro cyclic ketones and (d) excellent stereoselectivity up to 99% ee and >20:1 diastereoselectivity (anti:syn)...

Rooibos and honeybush are popular herbal teas produced from the shrubs of Aspalathus linearis and Cyclopia spp., respectively, which are indigenous to South Africa. Both herbal teas are rich in polyphenols and their consumption is associated with several health benefits, partly ascribed to their phenolic constituents. Quantification of phenolics in extracts and teas for quality control and research purposes is generally performed using HPLC, although dedicated and often species-specific methods are required...

INTRODUCTION: Chiari malformation type-1 (CM-1) may be treated by intradural (ID) or extradural (ED) posterior fossa decompression, although the optimal approach is debated. The Chiari Severity Index (CSI) is a pre-operative metric to predict patient-defined improvement after CM-1 surgery. In this study, we evaluate the results of ID versus ED decompression and assess the external validity of the CSI. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of pediatric CM-1 patients undergoing decompression at a single academic children's hospital...

After bariatric surgery there are some favourable effects on comorbidities of obesity as glucose and lipid metabolism besides weight loss. Therefore surgical measures targeting at improvement of such metabolic disorders especially diabetes type 2 has been called "metabolic surgery". The complexity of its underlying metabolic mechanisms is not yet clear, but restriction of energy and weight loss (maintenance) seem to be the cornerstones.Risks of these procedures which are drawn of the established methods of bariatric surgery are reported to be relatively low in qualified centers...
