BACKGROUND: The control of airway inflammation is crucial for management of asthma. Theophylline has been demonstrated to have an anti-inflammatory effect as a long-term-medication for asthma in various studies. In the present study we attempted to clarify if aminophylline, a theophylline derivative, could act as an anti-inflammatory agent as well as a bronchodilator in the treatment for acute asthma exacerbations. METHODS: Patients are initially treated either with an intravenous infusion of aminophylline or with inhalation of salbutamol...

Keeping in mind the frequency of preterm deliveries as well as the morbidity and mortality of the newborn population, many ways of bringing about faster maturation of the fetus have been. Today, we can say that after the 24th week of gestation, when the pneumocites time 2 are anatomically formatted, medical treatment of the fetus for maturation not only of the lungs but all the vulnerable organs is available. By stimulating the pneumocites to make surfactant and sphingomyeline and phosphatidilinositol and phosphatidilglycerol, we can reduce respiratory distress syndrome...

The importance of steroids given antenatally to the mothers in prevention of the respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is unquestionable. Also intra tracheal surfactant application in newborn is proven method of prevention and treatment of RDS. However both options have some limitations and new methods useful in prevention of RDS are still needed. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficiency and safety of the procedure of the intraamniotic surfactant supply as RDS prevention. Natural surfactant (Alveofact - Boehringer Ingelheim) has been given to 15 women at 24-32 weeks of pregnancy, two hours before expected childbirth (mainly cesarean section)...

A 39-year-old woman, without any previous cardiac history, is reported who developed a myocardial infarction during an attack of allergic asthma. Since childhood she has been treated with short acting beta 2-adrenoceptor agonists because of mild atopic asthma. After exposure to cat's allergen she suddenly developed a severe attack of dyspnea and cyanosis. She improved rapidly after administration of oxygen, glucocorticosteroids, aminophilline and beta 2-adrenoceptor agonist. Laboratory examinations of serum revealed elevation in enzymes activities of aminotransferases, creatinine phosphokinase and troponin I...

Between november 1994 and september 1995, there were 4 cases of premature infants in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) who developed gastrointestinal perforation and bleeding due to peptic ulcer and 3 died of this complication. In the first case, the neonate developed pneumoperitonium when weaning from the ventilator and was submitted to the operation with clinical diagnosis of Necrotizing Enterocolitis. Surprisingly, during the procedure, a perforated gastric ulcer was disclosed. Ever since, this NICU is aware of this diagnosis and try to better identify the possible risks factors...

A 68-year-old man was scheduled for subtotal gastrectomy. He had bronchial asthma, but had no history of ischemic heart disease and showed normal ECG. He stopped taking antiasthmatic drugs after the admission. His operation had been postponed for 10 days for an attack of bronchial asthma. The asthmatic attack was suppressed by infusing aminophilline. Before the operation, general anesthesia combined with epidural anesthesia (mepivacaine; 60 mg) was induced. At the time of the insertion of a stomach tube, bradycardia (48 bpm) and hypotension (48/30 mmHg) with an elevation of ST-segment in ECG were observed...

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to analyze the complications derived from the use of intravenous cannulae with particular attention being paid to the possible predisposing factors. METHODS: A prospective follow up of 569 intravenous cannulae placed in the emergency department or the medical ward of a county hospital was carried out. 492 of these cannulae were peripheral (PC) and 77 central inserted through peripheral veins (CPVC). RESULTS: Fifty-one percent of the catheters were withdrawn due to complications with the most frequent being phlebitis (35%), followed by extravasation (11...

The stability of cefodizime in five intravenous infusion fluids (0.9% sodium chloride, 5% dextrose in water, 10% dextrose in water, 5% amino acid injection, 3% polygeline) was studied at room temperature and at 4 degrees C. The compatibility of cefodizime with commonly used injectable drugs (ranitidine, metoclopramide, folinic acid, furosemide, aminophilline, methylprednisolone, betamethasone, hydrocortisone, dexamethasone, ketoprofen, noramidopyrine, acetylcysteine, digoxin, diazepam, acetylsalicylic acid, chlorpromazine, clonidine, clomipramine) was studied in 0...

The Authors consider the high number of patients who are affected with chronic obstructive bronchitis due to various factors (cigarettes smoking, infections, pollution, reduced immune response). These patients, when submitted to middle-high abdominal surgery in total anaesthesia of middle-long duration, are at increased risk due to pulmonary complications. Therefore, an adequate respiratory protection is necessary; actually it is possible with high dose of Ambroxol (1 g). Two groups, both of 35 patients, were compared; the first group was treated with Ambroxol 1 g the second one with aminophilline, bromexine, B2 adrenergic agonists, corticosteroids...

COMPARATIVE STUDY

In this study the effects of vincamin (Pervincamine) on cerebral metabolism were investigated. 60 subjects were tested. Vincamin was administrated to 36, aminophillin to 12. No drug was given to the remaining 12 subjects who were used as controls. A definite increase in cerebral metabolism was observed in patients receiving vincamin either by intravenous or intramuscular injection. Practically no change in cerebral metabolism was detected in subjects treated with aminophyllin.

Female HLA-SW (ICR) mice, 27-29 gm, were injected with pertussis vaccine intravenously 4 days before challenge with antigen, histamine, or serotonin. Alternatively, instead of pertussis vaccine, propranolol was injected intraperitoneally 45 min before histamine challenge...
