BACKGROUND: Restorative proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis improves the quality of life in patients with ulcerative colitis by the removal of diseased large bowel and preservation of the natural route of defecation. Although the surgery may improve preexisting extraintestinal manifestations in the joint, skin, and eyes, extraintestinal manifestations, particularly primary sclerosing cholangitis can persist after colectomy. OBJECTIVES: A systemic review of diagnosis and treatment of liver, joint, skin, and eye manifestations in patients with restorative proctocolectomy and ileal pouch-anal anastomosis for ulcerative colitis...

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Renal pathology is crucial in diagnosing the ageing kidney. Recent technological advances enabled high-resolution molecular investigations into the complex mechanisms of ageing and senescence. RECENT FINDINGS: The pathological analysis of large kidney tissue collections coupled with computer-assisted morphometry contributed to the establishment of age-related reference values for glomerular or vascular sclerosis, interstitial fibrosis, and tubular atrophy...

(1) Background: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are chronic inflammatory disorders involving innate and adaptive immune responses. Despite primarily affecting the gut, recent insights highlight systemic implications, expanding our understanding beyond intestinal boundaries. (2) Methods: This retrospective multicentric study explored the association of IBD and immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) and the impact of concurrent IMIDs on the course of IBD. Clinical data were collected from consecutive medical records of patients with IBD...

RATIONALE: Hodgkin lymphoma, a lymphatic system cancer, is treated by chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a rare neurotoxic effect associated with several drugs and systemic conditions. This case study emphasizes the potential risks of intensive chemotherapy regimens and postulates the impact of the circle of Willis variants on the heterogeneity of hemispheric lesions in PRES. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 42-year-old woman diagnosed with stage IIA nodular sclerosing Hodgkin lymphoma and chronic thrombocytopenia presented after 6 years of initial diagnosis and 4 years post-haploidentical transplant...

IgG4-related diseases (IgG4-RD) are a group of chronic progressive autoimmune diseases of unknown etiology that are increasingly recognized as an important pathophysiological basis for a variety of systemic diseases. It is thought to involve almost any organ of the body, but the involvement of the central nervous system is relatively rare. We report the case of a 56-year-old male patient admitted to the hospital d recurrent dizziness and nausea for more than 3 months. The preoperative imaging was misdiagnosed as a meningioma, with this lesion demonstrated localized inhomogeneous thickening of the meninges in the left parietal region on T2-weighted and T2 fat suppression sequences with localized nodular changes...

Sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis also known as cocoon abdomen is a rare chronic inflammatory condition of the peritoneum in which the bowel loops are encircled by a membrane (cocoon formation) within the peritoneal cavity leading to intestinal obstruction. It can be primary (idiopathic) or secondary (chemotherapy, beta-blockers, peritoneal dialysis, shunts, tuberculosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, etc.). The symptomatology report includes recurrent episodes of abdominal pain and vomiting. We present here a case of a 32-year-old male who presented with complaints of being unable to pass stools, vomiting (3-4 times), and abdomen pain for 4 days...

Immunoglobulin G-4 related disease (IgG4-RD) is an immune-mediated, inflammatory disease that often involves multiple organ systems. IgG4-RD can be classified according to the organs involved. Type 1 IgG4-RD is related to acute pancreatitis and sclerosing cholangitis. Disease manifestation is also seen in the retroperitoneal region, pelvic organs, and orbital space. Here we describe a rare case of IgG4-RD causing isolated acute kidney injury.

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a rare but fatal late neurological complication of measles, caused by persistent measles virus (MeV) infection of the central nervous system. There are no drugs approved for the treatment of SSPE. Here, we followed the clinical progression of a 5-year-old SSPE patient after treatment with the nucleoside analog remdesivir, conducted a post-mortem evaluation of the patient's brain, and characterized the MeV detected in the brain. The quality of life of the patient transiently improved after the first two courses of remdesivir, but a third course had no further clinical effect, and the patient eventually succumbed to his condition...

BACKGROUND: FUS-TFCP2 gene fusion is a recently identified and highly distinct molecular subtype of spindle cell/sclerosing rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), with fewer than 40 cases being reported to date. Due to its low incidence, clinical studies on this subtype are limited. Here, we report a new case of this rare entity to describe and summarize its unique clinical characteristics and treatment process, aiming to emphasize the importance of molecular testing for spindle cell/sclerosing RMS and increase the understanding of this subtype...

PURPOSE: Primary central nervous system, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder in the cerebellopontine angle after an allogeneic stem cell transplantation has never been reported in the literature. Typically, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma is non-polyploid. CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old man with a history of nodular sclerosing classic Hodgkin lymphoma stage IIB treated with systemic chemotherapy, external radiation and autologous stem cell transplant and double umbilical cord allogeneic transplant presented with several weeks of back pain...

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Biomaterial-based implants are gaining traction as an option for pleurodesis treatment, yet the search for the best biomaterial or the most suitable shape to handle spontaneous pneumothorax continues. This forward-looking research assessed the use of a poly- ε -caprolactone membrane for its safety when applied as a sclerosant in pleurodesis procedures in human patients. METHODS: From July 2017 to February 2018, we conducted a Phase I trial in which 10 patients with primary spontaneous pneumothorax were treated using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery with a poly- ε -caprolactone membrane...

BACKGROUND: Patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) often exhibit susceptibilities to multiple autoimmune diseases such as Sjogren's syndrome, primary sclerosing cholangitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. This propensity likely stems from common pathogenic mechanisms underlying immune-mediated conditions. This report highlights the occurrence of autoimmune thyroid disease during UC exacerbations. Notably, the patient displayed petrified auricles...
