An analytical method for the determination of eleven aminoglycosides in different types of milk and milk-based functional products has been optimized and validated. A hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) column was proposed for the separation of analytes by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). A commercially molecularly imprinted polymer has been used for the solid phase extraction of the analytes, in order to achieve high selectivity in the sample treatment...

BACKGROUND: Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) are important for newborn neurosensory development. Supplementation of breastfeeding mothers' diets with omega-3 PUFAs, such as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), may increase their concentration in human milk. Research aim: This study aimed to assess human milk composition after 15-day supplementation regimens containing either omega-3 PUFAs or olive oil, which does not provide ALA. METHODS: A multicenter factorial randomized trial was conducted with four groups of breastfeeding women, with each group containing 19 to 22 women...

The polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin, and dibenzofuran (PCDD/F) contents of six functional foods enriched with omega-3 were characterized. All the samples analyzed showed concentration levels below the maximal levels established by Regulation EC 1259/201120. PCB concentrations were higher than those of PCDD/Fs; oil supplements were the most contaminated samples [1.8 pg of WHO-TEQ/g of lipid weight (lw)] followed by chicken eggs (1.3 pg of WHO-TEQ/g of lw), cow's milk (0.23 pg of WHO-TEQ/g of lw), biscuits (0...

This study investigated whether intake of cow milk, naturally enriched with polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA, omega-3) and polyphenols (from propolis extract and vitamin E), from manipulation of cow's diet, would result in positive metabolic effects in rats from weaning until adulthood. Male Wistar rats were fed a standard chow diet or a hypercaloric diet (metabolically disturbed rats, obese) which was supplemented with either whole common milk, milk enriched with PUFA (PUFA-M) or milk enriched with PUFA and polyphenols (PUFA/P-M), at 5mL/kg body weight, having water as control...

Conjugated alpha linolenic acid (CLNA) isomers are promising lipids owing to their similarities with conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) but exerting their bioactivity at lower doses; some isomers also belong to omega 3 family. This review aims to summarize the state of the art about the utilization of CLNA as a functional ingredient. Indeed, in vitro and in vivo studies reported that CLNA exerted anticancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-obese, and antioxidant activities. However, CLNA has not been tested in humans. These compounds are naturally present in meat and milk fat from ruminants but the highest concentrations are found in vegetable oils...

The benefits of dietary phytosterols (PhySs) and long-chain n-3 PUFA (ω3) have been linked to their effects as cholesterol- and triglyceride (TGL)-lowering agents. However, it remains unknown whether these compounds have further metabolic effects on LDL lipid composition. Here, we studied the effects of PhyS- or ω3-supplemented low-fat milk (milk) on the LDL-lipidome. Overweight and moderately hypercholesterolemic subjects (n = 32) were enrolled in a two-arm longitudinal crossover study. Milk (250 ml/day), enriched with either 1...

Pecorino cheeses were produced using two different manufacturing procedures (either from raw milk or from milk previously subject to a thermisation at 65 °C for 10 s with the addition of starter culture) using the milk obtained from three groups of ewes fed three different concentrates: (1) control, (2) control enriched with 100 g/kg of extruded linseed, and (3) control enriched with 200 g/kg of extruded linseed. All concentrates were administered with alfalfa hay ad libitum. The extruded linseed-enriched diets increased the concentration of n-3 fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acid, and monounsaturated and polyunsaturated acids in raw milk and thermised milk cheese and decreased the concentration of saturated fatty acids...

In this work, an ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) with a tritium ionization source on-line coupled to a headspace (HS) autosampler and a multicapillary column (MCC) was evaluated for the monitoring of lipid oxidation products in milk with different flavours (cacao, fruits, cereals and nuts) and linseed oil samples enriched with omega-3 acids. In this combination, the multicapillary column is used as an interface between the HS and the IMS, providing the efficient separation of the volatile compounds. In this way, the proposed method permits the detection of hexanal, 2-butanone, acetone and dimethyl sulfide as representative degradation products...

The rise in global population has led to explorations of alternative sources of energy and food. Because corn and soybean are staple food crops for humans, their common use as the main source of dietary energy and protein for food-producing animals directly competes with their allocation for human consumption. Alternatively, de-fatted marine microalgal biomass generated from the potential biofuel production may be a viable replacement of corn and soybean meal due to their high levels of protein, relatively well-balanced amino acid profiles, and rich contents of minerals and vitamins, along with unique bioactive compounds...

Conventional and omega-3 fatty acid-enriched milk and cheese were analyzed for persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Omega-3-enriched products are usually supplemented with fish oil which is potentially contaminated. All classes of the considered POPs (PCBs, DDT, HCB, PBDEs, and PCDD/Fs) were found in the samples, with average concentrations higher in omega-3-enriched products than in conventional ones. For PCBs, DDT, and HCB, differences were statistically significant and, therefore, cannot be ascribed to normal variability...

Flaxseed is a potent source of the n-3 fatty acid α-linolenic acid (ALA), yet most ALA is lost during ruminal biohydrogenation when ground flaxseed is fed to ruminants. Heat processing and urea formaldehyde condensation polymer (UFCP) treatment of flaxseed were investigated as possible means of protecting ALA from ruminal degradation. Ground flaxseed (GF), heated ground flaxseed (HGF), or UFCP-treated ground flaxseed (UFCPGF) were incubated for 0, 4, 8, and 12h in 4 ruminally cannulated multiparous lactating Holstein cows...

Supplementing dairy cows with n-3 fatty acid-rich feeds does not easily increase quantities in milk fat. Previous results demonstrated very long-chain n-3 fatty acids are primarily transported in the PL fraction of blood, making them largely unavailable to the mammary gland for enrichment of milk fat. Our objective was to compare mammary uptake of fatty acids of increasing chain length and unsaturation delivered intravenously as TAG emulsions. Late lactation dairy cows were assigned to a completely randomized block design...

The effects, on the maternal mammary gland, of diets containing similar lipid percentages but differing in composition of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) have been assessed in rats during pregnancy and lactation. For this purpose, tuna fish oil (an n-3-PUFA-enriched oil) and corn oil (an n-6-PUFA-enriched oil) were included in diets at ratios such that the caloric inputs were the same as that of the control diet. As expected, the maternal diet affected the tissue composition of dams. Unexpectedly, only the tuna fish oil diet had an effect on pup growth, being associated with the pups being underweight between the ages of 11 and 21 days...

In spite of the difficulties in delivering PUFA to ruminants, studies have generally indicated that the PUFA of the omega-6 (linoleic acid) and omega-3 [α-linolenic acid; eicosapentaenoic (EPA), C20:5 omega-3; docosahexaenoic (DHA), C22:6 omega-3] families are the most beneficial to improving reproduction in cows. The objectives were to determine if a diet enriched in α-linolenic acid (omega-3) or linoleic acid (omega-6) would influence milk production and composition, metabolic status, and reproductive performance in lactating dairy cows...
