The purpose of this study was to clarify changes in cough function in patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA). Seventeen probable patients with MSA were studied. Peak cough flow (PCF), respiratory function (percentage of vital capacity, percentage of forced vital capacity, and percentage of predicted forced expiratory volume in one second), respiratory muscle strength (percentage of maximal inspiratory mouth pressure and percentage of maximal expiratory mouth pressure), and maximum phonation time (MPT) were assessed...

BACKGROUND: The application of intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) has been accepted to avoid injury of a recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN). Loss of the neuromonitoring signal indicates nerve injury and is subdivided into segmental type and global type nerve paralysis. This study aimed to determine the course of vocal cord function recovery after definitive loss of signal (LOS) types. METHODS: This retrospective study included 1,442 patients (with 2,752 nerves at risk) who had thyroidectomies between January 2018 and December 2021...

Introduction: Thermal injury to recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) during radiofrequency ablation (RFA) can produce temporary or permanent vocal cord paralysis.1 Hydrodissection with cold 5% glucose of "danger triangle" protects RLN during RFA.2 When RFA is performed under local anesthesia, RLN function is monitored by patients producing vocal sounds.3 Large lesions requiring longer RFAs warrant general sedation where voice cannot be assessed, therefore, an additional technique for RLN protection is advisable...

UNLABELLED: Fiberoptic laryngoscopy is a standard procedure for evaluation of vocal folds immobility. However, this method is invasive, requires special qualifications and technical equipment, which limits its routine use. Therefore, in daily practice, the vast majority of laryngoscopy are performed by an indirect way, the accuracy of which depends on the specialist experience and the patient compliance. On the other hand, a large number of patients require for a convenient, non-invasive and inexpensive approach to assess the vocal folds mobility...

BACKGROUND: Empty sella is an anatomical and radiological finding of the herniation of the subarachnoid space into the pituitary fossa leading to a flattened pituitary gland. Patients with empty sella may present with various symptoms, including headache due to intracranial hypertension and endocrine symptoms related to the specific pituitary hormones affected. Here, we report a female patient who developed persistent postoperative hypotension caused by subclinical empty sella syndrome after a simple surgery...

BACKGROUND: Cricopharyngeal myotomy and laryngeal framework surgery can improve swallowing function in patients with severe dysphagia. We developed a novel surgical technique for severe dysphagia associated with pharyngolaryngeal paralysis and cricopharyngeal dysfunction, performed under local anesthesia, and investigated its effectiveness. METHODS: We included nine patients who underwent cricopharyngeal muscle-origin transection with laryngeal framework surgery through a horizontal skin incision under local anesthesia...

OBJECTIVE:  Etiology of vocal cord paralysis (VCP) and laryngeal dysfunction may be congenital or surgical trauma of recurrent and superior laryngeal nerves. We assessed the incidence, risk factors, and morbidity of VCP after repair of esophageal atresia (EA). METHODS:  Medical records of 201 EA patients from 2000 to 2022 were reviewed for this retrospective study. Postrepair vocal cord examination (VCE) included awake nasolaryngeal fiberoscopy by otolaryngologist or laryngoscopy under spontaneous breathing anesthesia...

A 74-year-old male patient developed multiple infarcts of the brainstem and cerebellum, followed 14 months later by palatal tremor and bilateral vocal cord abduction paralysis, resulting in death due to type 2 respiratory failure. Pathologic analysis revealed old infarcts extending from the bilateral cerebellar cortices to the dentate nucleus, being more extensive on the right side, accompanied by Wallerian degeneration involving the left red nucleus, right central tegmentum tract, and inferior cerebellar peduncle, followed by pseudohypertrophy of the bilateral inferior olivary nuclei...

Chronic cough is a common problem that can be refractory to medical treatment. Nonpharmaceutical management of chronic cough has an important role in well selected patients. This review article outlines the history of chronic cough management, current approaches to speech pathology management of the condition and new modalities of nonpharmaceutical treatment. There is a need for further research into nonpharmaceutical options with well described randomised control trials.

BACKGROUND: Vocal cord dysfunction/inducible laryngeal obstruction (VCD/ILO) is characterized by breathing difficulties in association with excessive supraglottic or glottic laryngeal narrowing. The condition is common and can occur independently; however, it may also be comorbid with other disorders or mimic them. Presentations span multiple specialties and misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis is commonplace. Group-consensus methods can efficiently generate internationally accepted diagnostic criteria and descriptions to increase clinical recognition, enhance clinical service availability, and catalyze research...
