Infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV), most often HPV16, is associated with the development of anogenital and oropharyngeal cancers. Recently, ozone therapy was reported to have considerable efficacy against rabbit VX2 tumors, induced by the cottontail rabbit papillomavirus. The present study aims to determine whether similar results can be obtained in HPV16-transgenic mice, possibly paving the way for new therapeutic options against HPV-induced cancers. HPV16-transgenic and wild-type, female, 20 weeks-old mice were injected intraperitoneally with medical O3 /O2 (80░mL/kg, at O3 50░μg/mL), once a day, for 5 consecutive days...

The rationale behind intradiscal O2-O3 therapy is the pain elicited by the mechanical compression of the nerve root, which is associated with periganglionic and periradicular inflammation. This study aimed to determine the effect of intradiscal ozone injection on pain score and satisfaction of patients with low back pain (LBP) secondary to disc herniation. Patients with LBP diagnosed with disc herniation were enrolled in this clinical trial. After prepping and draping the area, intradiscal injection of ozone/oxygen mixture (10 ml, 25μg/ml) was performed under fluoroscopy guide (c-arm)...

Neuropathic pain is a severe health problem for which there is a lack of effective therapy. Ozone and Gardenia fruits have been used separately in pain relief for many years; however, their underlying mechanisms remain unclear. To investigate the pain‑relieving effects of combined ozone and Gardenia, a chronic constriction sciatic nerve injury (CCI) rat model was constructed and treated with ozone and gardenoside (Ozo&Gar), which is a compound found in Gardenia fruits. A total of 70 rats were randomly divided into five groups: Control (Ctrl), Ctrl + Ozo&Gar, Sham, CCI, and CCI + Ozo&Gar...

This paper identifies and characterizes silicone elastomers that are well-suited for fabricating highly stretchable and tear-resistant devices that require interfacial bonding by plasma or UV ozone treatment. The ability to bond two or more pieces of molded silicone is important for creating microfluidic channels, chambers for pneumatically driven soft robotics, and other soft and stretchable devices. Sylgard-184 is a popular silicone, particularly for microfluidic applications. However, its low elongation at break (∼100% strain) and moderate tear strength (∼3 N/mm) make it unsuitable for emerging, mechanically demanding applications of silicone...

The effect of groundwater viscosity control on the performance of surfactant-enhanced air sparging (SEAS) was investigated using 1- and 2-dimensional (1-D and 2-D) bench-scale physical models. The viscosity of groundwater was controlled by a thickener, sodium carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC), while an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS), was used to control the surface tension of groundwater. When resident DI water was displaced with a SCMC solution (500 mg/L), a SDBS solution (200 mg/L), and a solution with both SCMC (500 mg/L) and SDBS (200 mg/L), the air saturation for sand-packed columns achieved by air sparging increased by 9...

Propofol anesthesia is usually accompanied by hypotension, which is at least in part related to enhanced endothelial nitric oxide synthase (NOS3)-derived NO bioavailability. We examined here whether NOS3 polymorphisms (rs2070744, 4b/4a VNTR, rs3918226 and rs1799983) and haplotypes affect the changes in blood pressure and NO bioavailability induced by propofol. Venous blood samples were collected from 168 patients at baseline and after 10 min of anesthesia with propofol 2 mg/kg administered intravenously by bolus injection...

No study has evaluated the mutagenicity of atmospheres with a calculated air quality health index (AQHI). Thus, we generated in a UV-light-containing reaction chamber two simulated atmospheres (SAs) with similar AQHIs but different proportions of criteria pollutants and evaluated them for mutagenicity in three Salmonella strains at the air-agar interface. We continuously injected into the chamber gasoline, nitric oxide, and ammonium sulfate, as well as either α-pinene to produce SA-PM, which had a high concentration of particulate matter (PM): 119 ppb ozone (O3 ), 321 ppb NO2 , and 1007 μg/m3 PM2...

The role of environmental stressors, particularly exposure to air pollution, in the development of neurodegenerative disease remains underappreciated. We examined the neurological effects of acute ozone (O3) exposure in aged mice, where increased blood brain barrier (BBB) permeability may confer vulnerability to neuroinflammatory outcomes. C57BL/6 male mice, aged 8-10 weeks or 12 - 18 months were exposed to either filtered air (FA) or 1.0 ppm O3 for 4 hours; animals received a single IP injection of sodium fluorescein (FSCN) 20 hours post-exposure...

Purpose: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a common disease, imposing a great burden through pain and decreased function. There are many therapeutic modalities including non-pharmacologic choices and oral, topical, and intra-articular medications. New studies have shown promising results for ozone application in knee OA. Our aim was to compare the effects of ozone therapy versus hyaluronic acid (HA) intra-articular injection in knee OA patients. Methods: In this randomized clinical trial, a total of 174 patients with more than 3 months of chronic pain or swelling in the knee joints along with consistent imaging findings were enrolled and randomly allocated into two groups of HA and ozone, which were planned to undergo 3 weekly injections of HA (Hyalgan®) and 10 mL of a 30 μg/mL ozone solution, respectively...

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is mostly induced by disc herniation (DH) or degeneration and has a burden upon social activity and economical aspects of life. An abundance of medical and surgical interventions have evolved to resolve this problem, but one of the newly introduced techniques, which is the minimally invasive, low cost ozone-oxygen mixture (O₃-O₂) intradiscal injection, offers a rapid onset amelioration of symptoms with a sustained duration of pain relief. OBJECTIVE: We aim to evaluate the quality of pain alleviation using 2 different doses of intradiscal injections of O₃-O₂ mixture...

Propofol anesthesia is usually accompanied by hypotension. Studies have shown that the hypotensive effects of propofol increase in patients treated with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi). Given that both propofol and ACEi affect nitric oxide (NO) signaling, the present study tested the hypothesis that ACEi treatment induces pronounced hypotensive responses to propofol by increasing NO bioavailability. In this study we evaluated 65 patients, divided into three groups: hypertensive patients chronically treated with ACEi (HT-ACEi; n = 21), hypertensive patients treated with other antihypertensive drugs instead of ACEi, such as angiotensin II receptor blockers, β-blockers or diuretics (HT; n = 21) and healthy normotensive subjects (NT; n = 23)...

To obtain a suitable oxidation method for removing the color and lowering the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of waste soy sauce, Fenton (Fe(2+)), Fenton-like (Fe(3+)), and ozone (O₃) oxidation methods are used as the target reactions. In experimental conditions for Fenton oxidation, the dose of Fe(2+) and Fe(3+) was varied between 100 mg/L and 300 mg/L. The dose of hydrogen peroxide for the reaction was injected from 100-1000 mg/L. For ozone oxidation, the pH was increased from 3 to 14 and the O₃-containing gas was supplied continuously for 30 min through a gas diffuser at the bottom of the reactor at different applied O₃ doses (10-90 mg/L)...

BACKGROUND: Fumigants like phosphine, methyl bromide and sulfuryl fluoride are highly effective for the control of structural, storage and agricultural arthropod pests. Unfortunately, many of these synthetic compounds are highly toxic to people, many pests have developed resistance to these compounds and methyl bromide, the 'gold standard' for fumigants, was de-registered because of its contribution to depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer. Alternative fumigant chemistry is needed...
