This study proposes a novel inferior vena cava filter (IVCF) design, "Lotus," aiming to enhance release stability and endothelialization. A catheter-filter-vessel model was established for IVCF property analysis, validated by comparing numerical simulations and in vitro tests. Lotus's mechanical properties were analyzed, and optimization suggestions are provided. Compared to existing clinical filters, Lotus demonstrates improved release stability and thrombus capture ability. This work suggests Lotus as a potential technical reference for improved IVCF treatment...

BACKGROUND: While accepted indications for the use of inferior vena cava filter (IVCF) in patients with a venous thromboembolism (VTE) have remained stable, their use continues to be frequent. Retrieval rates are still low, being particularly notable in the population with cancer. This study aims to review the rate of adherence to guidelines recommendation and to compare retrieval rates and complications in both cancer and non-cancer patients. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed including 185 patients in whom an IVCF was placed in Hospital Clinic of Barcelona...

The use of soiled-bedded sentinels (SBSs) has historically been the standard for colony health surveillance monitoring at our institution. With the advent of newer technologies in which dust collected from filters is tested by PCR, we compared traditional SBS with PCR testing of both exhaust air dust collected from a filter in the downstream vertical plenum (exhaust dust test [EDT]) and the SBS cage-level exhaust filter (SCEF). Our hypothesis was that both methods of filter testing would identify more pathogens than SBS testing...

INTRODUCTION: Venous thromboembolism is widely recognized as a life-threatening complication in trauma, yet renal vein thrombosis (RVT) following trauma is particularly rare. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a case of a 67-year-old man who was brought to the emergency department after falling down a 14-step staircase at home which presented right kidney trauma (parenchyma laceration with a perirenal hematoma) on computed tomography, and hematuria. Considering the patient's hemodynamic stability, a non-operative treatment was initiated, and the patient was referred to the intensive care unit for close observation...

Retrievable inferior vena cava filters were designed to provide mechanical prophylaxis from pulmonary embolism with the intent for retrieval once no longer indicated, and have been utilized at a high rate since their introduction. Unfortunately, retrieval rates have historically lagged behind, in part due to significant rates of failed standard retrieval techniques for filters with prolonged dwell time. Refinement in advanced retrieval techniques has now allowed (in experienced centers) for safe removal of filters previously considered irretrievable...

The Inari ClotTriever system (Inari Medical, Irvine, California) is safe and effective for the treatment of DVT. However, because it consists of a 31 cm coring device and collection bag that must be extended for use, application may be precluded by available intravascular "running room", such as in the presence of an IVC filter. Here we present a technique for bypassing IVC filters via retrograde deployment of the ClotTriever within a sheath, as illustrated in three cases. This technique extends the applicability of the ClotTriever to locations in which its length would otherwise preclude use...

Thrombotic events are well-known complications of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Inferior vena cava filters (IVCF) are devices used to prevent pulmonary embolism (PE) and also increase the risk of thrombotic complications. Here, we describe the case of a 38-year-old female with extensive bilateral lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and thrombosis of the infrarenal inferior vena cava (IVC) in the setting of an IVCF and symptomatic COVID-19. The IVCF had been placed a few months prior for a left femoral DVT and PE after spinal surgery...

Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters are used to prevent fatal and nonfatal pulmonary embolism in patients who otherwise cannot receive anticoagulation for venous thrombosis. While generally safe and effective, complications can arise, especially after prolonged implantation. Timely retrieval is essential once the indication for insertion has resolved. However, encountering patients with long-standing embedded filters is not uncommon. This case report discusses the successful retrieval of a permanent Greenfield IVC filter after 29 years...

BACKGROUND: Venous stasis dermatitis is a common skin condition that typically affects the lower extremities and may occur secondarily to venous insufficiency which can lead to a pooling of fluid within the legs. The etiology of venous stasis dermatitis is largely related to medical conditions that affect the blood flow to the lower extremities. Chronic occlusion of the common iliac veins and femoral veins can cause a lack of proper blood flow to the lower extremities. When an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter becomes tilted, it can occlude the vessels distal to its placement...

A multigravida in her late 20s was diagnosed with inferior vena cava thrombosis (IVCT) and PE at 26 weeks of pregnancy after a routine prenatal care visit. The patient denied any diseases that could cause IVCT, as well as the presence of any symptoms. Progressive thrombocytopenia was diagnosed in the period until the implantation of the inferior vena cava filter (IVCF). Due to a rupture of foetal membranes and chorioamnionitis, labour was induced at 32 weeks of pregnancy. The IVCF remained in place and anticoagulants were continued through the postpartum period for up to 6 months...

BACKGROUND: Obstructive shock is extremely rare in clinical practice and is caused by acute blood flow obstruction in the central vessels of either the systemic or pulmonary circulation. Utilizing inferior vena cava filters (IVCFs) to prevent pulmonary embolism (PE) is associated with some potential complications, such as inferior vena cava thrombosis (IVCT). Shock as a direct result of IVCT is rare. We present a case of obstructive shock secondary to extensive IVCT caused by inadequate anticoagulant therapy after the placement of an IVCF...

The inferior vena cava (IVC) and superior vena cava are the main conduits of the systemic venous circulation into the right atrium. Developmental or procedural interruptions of vena cava might predispose to stasis and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) distal to the anomaly and may impact the subsequent rate of pulmonary embolism (PE). This study aimed to review the various etiologies of developmental or procedural vena cava interruption and their impact on venous thromboembolism. A systematic search was performed in PubMed according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines per each clinical question...

May-Thurner syndrome (MTS) is a rare, yet important, differential diagnosis in reproductive-age women with deep vein thrombosis (DVT). It is characterized by the compression of the left common iliac vein by the right common artery against the lumbar vertebra. The condition is complicated by recurrent DVT with pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE). Here is a case of multiparous women in early puerperium with right tubo-ovarian abscess and left lower limb DVT likely due to MTS. The diagnosis was further complicated by the presence of persistent thrombocytosis but a myeloproliferative neoplasm was ruled out by genetic mutation testing...
