Oxidative stress is employed to depict a series of responses detrimental to normal cellular functions resulting from an imbalance between intracellular oxidants, mainly reactive oxygen species and antioxidant defenses. Oxidative stress often contributes to the development of various diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative diseases. In this process, the relationship between small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO) and oxidative stress has garnered significant attention, with its posttranslational modification (PTM) frequently serving as a marker of oxidative stress status...

In this study, we tested the ability of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria strains to accumulate and biotransform sodium selenite into various selenium species, including selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs). Selenium tolerance and cytotoxicity of selenized strains towards human adenocarcinoma Caco-2 and HT29 cells were determined for all tested strains. Furthermore, the influence of selenium enrichment on the antioxidant activity of selenized strains and hydrophobicity of the bacterial cell surfaces were evaluated...

BACKGROUND: the number of infants and children who receive artificial nutrition at home has been steadily increasing over the last decades, as better outcomes for children with chronic conditions have been achieved. In order to evaluate the need of resources to implement the technique it is necessary to know how many patients benefit from home artificial nutrition. This information can be estimated from the register of patients, when available. METHODS: in this paper the characteristics of all registers were reviewed, especially those devoted to pediatric patients...

BACKGROUND: Feed supplements, including essential trace elements are believed to play an important role in augmenting fish immune response. In this context, selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) in fish diets via a green biosynthesis strategy have attracted considerable interest. In this investigation, selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs, 79.26 nm) synthesized from the green microalga Pediastrum boryanum were incorporated into Nile tilapia diets to explore its beneficial effects on the immune defense and intestinal integrity, in comparison with control basal diets containing inorganic Se source...

Nerita yoldii is a euryhaline species commonly found in the intertidal zone. To investigate the genetic diversity of 233 N. yoldii individuals from eight locations along the coast of China, we utilized the mitochondrial COI gene as a molecular marker. A total of 34 haplotypes were detected, exhibiting a mean haplotype diversity ( Hd ) of 0.5915 and a mean nucleotide diversity ( Pi ) of 0.0025, indicating high levels of genetic diversity among all populations. An analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) indicated that the primary source of genetic variation occurs within populations...

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a multifactorial disorder. A possible role of the social network and the gut microbiota in pathogenesis has been added. Exogenous shocks such as the COVID19 pandemic have had a negative impact on patients with AN. The potential medical and nutritional impact of malnutrition and/or compensatory behaviors gives rise to a complex disease with a wide range of severity, the management of which requires a multidisciplinary team with a high level of subject matter expertise. Coordination between levels of care is necessary as well as understanding how to transition the patient from pediatric to adult care is essential...

Microorganisms play important roles in the reduction of toxic inorganic selenium (selenite and selenate) to less-toxic biogenic selenium nanoparticles (Bio-SeNPs), which have higher biocompatibility. In our previous study, we synthesized a novel type of biogenic selenium nanoparticles synthesized with alginate oligosaccharides (SeNPs-AOS), and found that the particle size of Se is 80 nm and the Se content is 8% in the SeNPs-AOS; and dietary 5 mg/kg SeNPs-AOS has been shown to be effective against HS in broilers. However, whether SeNPs-AOS can mitigate HS-induced the impairment of thigh muscle quality in broilers is still unclear...

As a result of their greater bioactivity, selenium nanoparticles are widely employed in a variety of biological applications. Physical, chemical, and biological approaches can all be used to synthesize selenium nanoparticles. Se has an uneven regional distribution and is added to mitigate As contamination in Se-deficient areas. However, the bacterial response to exogenous Se remains poorly understood. Herein, we found that As(III) presence was crucial for Enterobacter sp. Z1 to develop resistance against Se(IV). Se(IV) reduction served as a detoxification mechanism in bacteria, and our results demonstrated an increase in the production of Se nanoparticles (SeNPs) in the presence of As(III)...
