The ABC of paediatric ECG interpretation In paediatric patients, ECG is used as a tool for investigation of arrhythmias, chest pain, syncope, intoxications and congenital heart abnormalities. Paediatric ECGs differ significantly from adult ECGs, and change gradually during childhood, largely because of the changes that start with the transition of foetal circulation at birth. This evolution is most prominent during the first year of life, but it is not until the late adolescent years that the ECG corresponds to that of adults...

A 75-year-old man collapsed on a golf course and received cardiopulmonary resuscitation from a bystander, including the use of a public automated external defibrillator (AED). The AED was discharged once, with return of spontaneous circulation. An air ambulance crew found the patient haemodynamically stable, with no acute abnormalities on a 12-lead ECG. He had reduced consciousness and a dilated left pupil. On contacting the patient's wife by telephone, she said that he had fallen and hit his head earlier that day...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Palpitations are the most common complaint in cardiology outpatient clinics. These palpitations may be derived from paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) and can be easily overlooked. It is unclear whether inter-atrial conduction time (ICT) may predict the paroxysmal AF in out-patients that present with palpitations. We evaluated the ability of the ICT to predict paroxysmal AF in these patients. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study group consisted of 199 patients (110 female)...

There is a need for affordable, widely deployable maternal-fetal ECG monitors to improve maternal and fetal health during pregnancy and delivery. Based on the diffusion-based channel selection, here we present the mathematical formalism and clinical validation of an algorithm capable of accurate separation of maternal and fetal ECG from a two channel signal acquired over maternal abdomen. The proposed algorithm is the first algorithm, to the best of the authors' knowledge, focusing on the fetal ECG analysis based on two channel maternal abdominal ECG signal, and we apply it to two publicly available databases, the PhysioNet non-invasive fECG database (adfecgdb) and the 2013 PhysioNet/Computing in Cardiology Challenge (CinC2013), to validate the algorithm...

OBJECTIVES: Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is described as the development of sudden syncope attacks or death as a result of ventricular tachycardia (VT) episodes that might be observed as elongated QT interval in electrocardiography (ECG). Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) is recommended as first-line treatment for the condition in guidelines. We aimed to present an adolescent recently diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder (BD) who had LQTS that was treated with ICD, discussing her follow up and treatment along with relevant literature...

In this study, we propose a new information theoretic measure to quantify the complexity of biological systems based on time-series data. We demonstrate the potential of our method using two distinct applications to human cardiac dynamics. Firstly, we show that the method clearly discriminates between segments of electrocardiogram records characterized by normal sinus rhythm, ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. Secondly, we investigate the multiscale complexity of cardiac dynamics with respect to age in healthy individuals using interbeat interval time series and compare our findings with a previous study which established a link between age and fractal-like long-range correlations...

As a result of improvements in congenital heart surgery, there are more adults alive today with congenital heart disease (CHD) than children. Individuals with cardiac birth defects may be able to participate in physical activities but require proper cardiovascular evaluation. The American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology released guidelines in 2015 for athletes with cardiovascular abnormalities. The guidelines express that although restriction from competitive athletics may be indicated for some, the majority of individuals with CHD can and should engage in some form of physical activity...

Type 1 myotonic dystrophy (DM1) is a hereditary neuromuscular disease affecting multiple organs in human adults. Here we report a 42-year-old man diagnosed with DM1. Having a history of progressive muscular weakness and gradual loss of visual acuity, he was referred to us by his ophthalmologist for risk assessment of undergoing cataract surgery. Cardiology workup revealed type 1 Brugada ECG pattern, positive late potentials and inducible ventricular fibrillation in an electrophysiology study. Literature review revealed that those ECG changes may be observed in DM1, suggesting that DM1 and Brugada syndrome may share a common pathophysiologic pathway...
