In Kerala and other South Indian States, the ayurvedic by-products are widely available which can adequately be incorporated into pig diets. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of dietary incorporation of cooked barley residue and spent grapes on feed intake, growth performance, and nutrient utilization in sows and their piglets. Using completely randomized design (CRD), fifteen (15) Large White Yorkshire (LWY) pregnant sows with an average body weight of 180.53 kg, 3 weeks before the estimated date of farrowing, were randomly allotted to one of three treatment groups...

BACKGROUND: Nasal valve collapse is relatively common with a lifetime prevalence of up to 13%. Etiologies include prior rhinoplasty, other surgical procedures, facial paralysis, congenital defects, trauma, and aging. Internal nasal valve collapse leads to impairment of nasal breathing, which significantly disturbs quality of life. Many approaches to increase the cross-sectional area of the internal nasal valve have been described. RESULTS: The main categories reviewed in this article are cartilage grafting, implants, and suture suspension techniques...

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is a commonly performed procedure with many options regarding graft choice and graft fixation. The purpose of this study was to compare suspensory and aperture fixation in terms of femoral osseous integration of the bone block after ACL reconstruction with an Achilles tendon allograft. METHODS: After institutional review board approval and patient consent were obtained, 37 patients underwent ACL reconstruction with an Achilles tendon allograft...

As the opioid epidemic continues across the United States, law enforcement K9s (LEK9s) are at increased risk of accidental exposure and overdose. This study evaluated a novel training program teaching handlers to administer naloxone to their LEK9 in the event of an overdose. Seventy-five LEK9 handlers from a governmental agency attended a naloxone training session. A presurvey given to the handlers evaluated their knowledge of opioid overdose in LEK9s and their confidence administering naloxone. Officers were educated via a PowerPoint presentation about naloxone and how to administer it to their LEK9...

Three working dogs were diagnosed with noise-induced hearing loss following exposure to loud noise. Physical and neurologic examinations in each case revealed no significant findings. Brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) demonstrated bilateral sensorineural deafness. One dog did not regain hearing but continued working with adjusted protocols utilizing hand signals. One dog was lost to follow-up. The last dog was treated with oral Vitamin B complex (daily), Vitamin E (400 IU daily), and N-acetyl-cystine (600 mg daily) and regained hearing 2 months later, based on repeat BAER testing...

Cochlear implant (CI) surgery is generally safe and associated with a limited number of complications, among which the extrusion of the receiver/stimulator (R/S) or the electrode misplacement and migration might require a CI re-implantation. The aim of this pilot study is to describe a new technique to firmly fix the R/S using the Mitek suture anchors system (Depuy Mitek Surgical Products, Inc. Raynham, Massachusetts). We tested two different models and in our experience, the web of suture created with this device can improve the stability of the bond of the R/S to the underlying curved bone surface...

The purpose of this study is to compare the biomechanical characteristics of a new fully threaded titanium suture anchor with previously examined fixation techniques. Methods  Repair of FDP tendon avulsions was performed in 18 fresh-frozen cadavers using one of three implants: Nano Corkscrew FT 1.7 mm suture anchor (Group 1; Arthrex, Inc., Naples, FL; n  = 6), Mitek Micro 1.3 mm suture anchor (Group 2; Mitek Surgical Products, Westwood, MA; n  = 6), or pullout suture button fixation (Group 3; n  = 6)...

We present the case of a 81-year-old patient with right facial palsy suffering from recurrent medial ectropion with lower lateral dislocation of the lacrimal punctum causing epiphora and photophobia. The patient was first treated for ectropion with lateral tarsal strip procedure. Unfortunately, this surgical procedure did not get the expected result. This was the reason we used the Mitek anchor system to fix the lower lateral dislocation of the punctum. We had no recurrence of symptoms during a follow-up period of 18 months...

Osteoporosis is a disease with complex etiology where the genetic factors may account for as much as 50-85% of the risk of its development in postmenopausal women. The polymorphism of estrogen receptor genes (ESR1, ESR2) seems essential among the genetic factors. The goal of this study was to analyze polymorphisms of selected genes in a population of postmenopausal women treated for osteoporosis and to evaluate the influence of genetic and nongenetic factors on the estimated 10-year risk of fracture. The study group consisted of 214 women hospitalized for treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The accumulation of microvesicles in erythrocyte concentrates during storage or irradiation may be responsible for clinical symptoms such as inflammation, coagulation and immunization. Our aim was to determine whether any of the cluster of differentiation (CD) molecules responsible for important functions are present on microvesicles, and if their expression level is dependent on the storage period of erythrocyte concentrates. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Erythrocyte microvesicles were isolated from 'fresh' (2nd day) and 'old' (42nd day) stored erythrocyte concentrates...

BACKGROUND: The removal of maxillary carcinoma causes various types of tissue defects, which can be corrected by free flap reconstruction. In flap reconstruction after maxillary cancer resection, ensuring prosthesis stability is frequently difficult owing to the flap's weight. Therefore, a second modification technique is required for improvement of configuration. This case where flap suspension and flap modifying surgery were performed using anchor system for the extensive complete maxillectomy case...

The study investigated whether the application of dressings with autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) would reduce the healing time in patients with chronic venous leg ulcers. This is a prospective observational study that included 100 patients diagnosed with lower extremity venous insufficiency complicated by ulceration of a leg or foot, who had been after angioplasty of stenotic artery. Patients were divided into two groups of 50 each: treated with PRP (study group) and treated with conventional hydrocolloid dressings (control group)...

Purpose: In recent years, the endoscopic technique has emerged as a minimally invasive approach to forehead rejuvenation, although the specific need for and mode of brow fixation for endoscopic brow lifts remain under considerable debate. An ideal fixation device should provide non-palpable long-lasting fixation and allow retention of the device post-operatively without the need for removal. It should also allow precise intraoperative adjustment for symmetry and correction of brow ptosis...

This article describes the evaluation of the anthocyanins stability in yogurts with strawberry, sour cherry, and blueberry fruit preparation during 8-week storage period under refrigerated condition. The differences in anthocyanin degradation rate and color changes between stirred yogurts and fruit-on-the-bottom yogurts (fruit preparation was on-the-bottom of package) were compared. Anthocyanin content in fruit yogurts showed a significant decreased during the storage, especially for the first 2 weeks. There were differences in the rate of pigment degradation between yogurt obtained from a different species of fruit...

When evaluating the characteristics of a new surgical technique, it is important to consider practical effects of the technique on clinical practice, as it would be inappropriate to advocate for cost-prohibitive or excessively time-consuming methods, even if biomechanically superior. The Krackow stitch has long been considered the gold standard for suture-graft fixation; potential limitations with this technique include the risk of needle sticks to the surgical team and the time required to perform the stitch...
