Advancement in science has tended to improve treatment of fatal diseases such as cancer. A major concern in the area is the spread of cancerous cells, technically refered to as metastasis into other organs beyond the primary organ. Treatment in such a stage of cancer is extremely difficult and usually palliative only. In this study, we focus on finding gene-gene network modules which are functionally similar in nature in the case of breast cancer. These modules extracted during the disease progression stages are analyzed using p-value and their associated pathways...

<i><b>Introduction</b>: Mixed dementia (MixD) refers to a combination of definite Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular encephalopathy. The existence of a "pure" type of vascular dementia (VaD) is controversial. There is a need to find magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics allowing the distinction between VaD and MixD. The present post-mortem 7.0-tesla MRI compares the frequency or severity and the topography of the small cerebrovascular lesions in brains of patients with VaD and with MixD...

PURPOSE: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is used after surgical resection to treat the microscopic disease for malignant pleural mesothelioma and to increase survival rates. As accurate light delivery is imperative to PDT efficacy, the deformation of the pleural volume during the surgery is studied on its impact on the delivered light fluence. In this study, a three-dimensional finite element-based (3D FEM) deformable image registration is proposed to directly match the volume of lung to the volume of pleural cavity obtained during PDT to have accurate representation of the light fluence accumulated in the lung, heart and liver (organs-at-risk) during treatment...

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is a state characterized by profound physiological hematological changes. However, hematological reference intervals being used in clinical practice in Ethiopia are derived from nonlocal general populations, despite the significant variations reported previously. The aim of this study was to determine the immunological and hematological reference intervals in healthy pregnancy among HIV-seronegative pregnant women in northwest Ethiopia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 200 healthy, HIV-seronegative pregnant women were enrolled from February 2015 to June 2015 in a cross-sectional study setting at Gondar University Hospital...

OBJECTIVE: Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) of patients with malignant tumors can be used as a prognostic marker. However, there are few relevant reports to date on esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Our study assesses the clinical significance of CTCs in ESCC patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: CTCs were detected in 103 peripheral blood (PB) samples from 59 ESCC patients. Correlation between CTCs and clinical parameters was analyzed using the χ(2) test or Fisher's exact test...

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer involves the use of a photosensitizer that can be light-activated to eradicate tumors via direct cytotoxicity, damage to tumor vasculature and stimulating the body's immune system. Treatment outcome may vary between individuals even under the same regime; therefore a non-invasive tumor response monitoring system will be useful for personalization of the treatment protocol. We present the combined use of diffuse optical spectroscopy (DOS) and diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) to provide early assessment of tumor response...

Hyperlipidaemia and hypercholesterolaemia are risk factors of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. The reference range of lipids during pregnancy has not yet been clearly set. This study sought to measure lipid parameters and pentraxin (PTX) 3 levels in low-risk pregnant women. The participants had serial blood samples taken between their 6th-9th week, 10th-13th week, 14th-19th week, 24th-29th week and 35th-40th week (as long as there were no contractions), during the labour period, and 2 days after delivery...

In order to better understand the variable sensitivities of crustaceans to metals, we investigated the impact of cadmium exposure in 3 populations of Gammarus fossarum from different rivers of France. The first population lives in a Cd-contaminated river from a geochemical background, while the others inhabit Cd-free sites. Osmoregulation, a relevant biomarker to evaluate crustacean health following metal contamination, was used as a proxy to evaluate the intra- and inter-populationnal sensitivities to Cd. Specimens from each population were experimentally exposed to 9 μg Cd(2+)/L Cd for 7 days and hemolymph osmolality (HO) was then individually measured...

Spirometry is a physiological test for assessing the functional aspect of the lungs using an objective indicator to measure the maximum amount of air that a patient can inhale and exhale. Acceptable spirometry testing needs to be conducted three times by an acceptable and reproducible method for determining forced vital capacity (FVC). Until the results of three tests meet the criteria of reproducibility, the test should be repeated up to eight times. Interpretation of spirometry should be clear, concise, and informative...

Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV also referred to as CD-26) is a serine protease enzyme with remarkable diagnostic and prognostic value in a variety of health and disease conditions. Herein, we describe a simple and real-time colorimetric assay for DPP-IV/CD-26 activity based on the aggregation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) functionalized with the peptide substrates: Gly-Pro-Asp-Cys (GPDC) or Val-Pro-ethylene diamine-Asp-Cys (VP-ED-DC). Cleavage of the substrates by DPP-IV resulted in aggregation of the AuNPs with accompanying color change in the solution from red to blue that was monitored using either a UV-visible spectrophotometer or by the naked eye...

Exposure to urban air pollution has been associated with adverse effects on cardio-vascular and respiratory health, both short and long term. Consequently, governments have applied policies to reduce air pollution. Quantitative health impact assessments of hypothetic changes in air pollution have been conducted at national and global level, but assessments of observed air pollution changes associated with specific clean air policies at a local or regional scale remain scarce. This study estimates health impacts attributable to a decrease in PM10 and NO2 exposure in the Agglomeration of Lausanne-Morges (ALM), Switzerland, between 2005 and 2015, corresponding to the implementation period of a supra-municipal plan of measures to reduce air pollution in different sectors such as transport, energy, and industry (called Plan OPair 05)...

In this work we made an attempt to assess the effect of drug-induced changes of flexibility on the penetration of deformable vesicles into the human skin. Eight cationic liposomes with different degrees of flexibility were obtained by entrapping unfractionated heparin, enoxaparin and nadroparin. The deformability was studied by a novel, facile and reliable extrusion assay appositely developed and validated by means of quantitative nanoscale mechanical AFM measurements of vesicle elastic modulus (log10(YM))...

Osteoarthritis is a common hip joint disease, involving loss of articular cartilage. The prevalence and prognosis of hip osteoarthritis have been difficult to determine, with various clinical and radiological methods used to derive epidemiological estimates exhibiting significant heterogeneity. MRI-based methods directly visualise hip joint cartilage, and offer potential to more reliably define presence and severity of osteoarthritis, but have been underused. We performed a systematic review of MRI-based estimates of hip articular cartilage in the general population and in patients with established osteoarthritis, using MEDLINE, EMBASE and SCOPUS current to June 2016, with search terms such as 'hip', 'femoral head', 'cartilage', 'volume', 'thickness', 'MRI', etc...
