Malignant myopericytoma is an exceedingly rare soft tissue tumour with only 14 documented cases in the scientific literature. Myopericytomas can occur in association with HIV-AIDS and have a predilection for internal organs such as the bronchus, larynx, liver and brain. Ebstein-Barr virus encoded small RNA(EBER) was positive in three out of 14 cases. In this case report we present the second documented case of a malignant myopericytoma, with a positive EBER found intracranially - specifically in the supratentorial compartment - invading the superior sagittal sinus...

METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of children diagnosed with HLH at our center from February-2017 to October-2020. RESULTS: Out of the nine diagnosed patients, genetic predisposition was present in three children; two had identified infectious triggers...

Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC), is a rare type of cancer and typically occurs in pharyngeal and foregut-derivative organs, Including the salivary glands, thymus, stomach and liver (1). Pulmonary LELC typically affects the young and non-smoking population, and is associated with Ebstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection (1,2). We present an rare case with a pulmonary mass on CT scan of the thorax, which was subsequently proved as a LELC of the lung and a brief review of the relevant literature. The patient is a 51-year old man, presented with shorthness of breath and cough for 1 months...

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a life-threatening disease with uncontrolled immune activation and inflammatory reaction, often leads to a deadly cytokine storm. In severe Ebstein-Barr virus-triggered HLH receiving standard immunosuppression, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) with oXiris® blood purification membrane resulted in a timely reduction of inflammatory markers and discontinuation of vasopressors. To our knowledge, this is the first report of successful use of the oXiris® membrane in HLH...

PURPOSE: This study aimed to conduct a meta-analysis to investigate the distribution of EBV and HPV stratified according to histological NPC type. MATERIALS & METHODS: We performed a meta-analysis to produce pooled prevalence estimates in a random-effects model. We also performed calculations for attributable fractions of viral combinations in NPC, stratified according to histological type. RESULTS: There was a higher prevalence of HPV DNA in WHO Type I (34...

Esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) has had the fastest increasing incidence of any solid tumor in the United States in the last 30 years. Long standing gastroesophageal reflux disease is a well-established risk factor with strong associations with obesity, alcohol and tobacco. However, there are likely additional contributing factors. Viruses such as human papillomavirus, ebstein-barr virus and herpes simplex virus have been implicated in the pathogenesis of esophageal cancer. This review will discuss the known literature linking viruses to esophageal adenocarcinoma and consider future relationships such as identifying prognostic and predictive molecular biomarkers to guide therapies...

It is a form of systemic onset juvenile rheumatoid arthritis that is encountered in adults, typically between 15-25 years and 36-45years. We here describe a 28 years lady with fever, arthritis of multiple large joints, lymphadenopathy and rash, with negative Rheumatoid factor and evidence of past infection with Ebstein-Barr virus and Parvovirus B19...

We present the case of a 62-year-old African-American woman with medical history of hypertension and hyperlipidaemia who presented to dermatology clinic for 'bug bites'. Skin examination showed resolving bullae on the shins and postinflammatory pigment changes. Histopathology showed eosinophilic spongiosis and direct immunofluorescence (DIF) was negative for IgG, IgM, IgA and C3. After returning to clinic with recurrent severe bullous eruptions, the patient presented with anaemia, lymphocytosis, posterior cervical lymphadenopathy and weight loss...

BACKGROUND: Even though identical blood group matching between recipient and donor is preferred, it is still not clear by how much this improves the outcome for patients who received a lung transplant (LTx), or whether there is any survival benefit. Earlier studies have yielded ambiguous results and few have investigated long-term survival. The aim of this study is, therefore, to explore the different outcomes of identical and compatible recipient and donor blood group matching to determine whether identical matching is superior (LTx)...

INTRODUCTION: The immune reaction developing against Ebstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection may be one of the major determinants of severe adenoid hypertrophy (AH) and chronic otitis media with effusion (COME) needing surgery. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between these antibodies and the need for surgery due to complications such as severe AH and COME. METHODS: Sixty consecutive patients <15 years old who were admitted to our outpatient clinics between January 2014 and December 2015 with severe AH ± COME and underwent adenoidectomy ± ventilation tube insertion and 129 control patients who had a history of EBV infection at least three months before the inclusion to the study without current symptoms of upper airway obstruction and middle ear disease were included in this study...

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is not always suspected at the time of presentation. It is often mistaken for other diagnoses; complicated by the fact that it is often associated with an inciting event that has significant overlap. Kawasaki disease, along with other disorders, such as Ebstein Barr Virus infection, are conditions that may lead HLH. Our patient had a presentation that was consistent with Kawasaki disease on initial presentation, however subsequently met the diagnostic criteria of HLH...

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare and severe syndrome usually associated with a cytotoxicity deficiency, which leads to an excess of immune response driven by activated macrophages and cytotoxic T cells. In children, HLH can be genetic, as part of a familial lymphohistiocytosis, or secondary: the most frequent causes are systemic-onset juvenile idiopathic arthritis, hematological malignancies, and severe infections, especially with Ebstein-Barr virus or leishmaniosis. We report on the case of a 3-year-old girl with no past medical history, who presented inaugural Pseudomonas aeruginosa maxillary osteitis, with secondary HLH...

The Ebstein Barr virus(EBV), herpes virus 5 has been associated with lymphoproliferative disordrers. Age-related EBV+ B-LPD is defined as an EBV+ clonal B-cell lymphoid proliferation or EBV+-DLBCL developing in patients over the age of 40 years in the absence of any known immunodeficiency and without an underlying T-cell lymphoma1. We present a case of EBV+ clonal B-cell lymphoid proliferation. Key words: Oral mucosa ulcer, EBV+-DLBCL, age related.
