X-radiography (X-ray imaging) is a widely used imaging technique in art investigation. It can provide information about the condition of a painting as well as insights into an artist's techniques and working methods, often revealing hidden information invisible to the naked eye. X-radiograpy of double-sided paintings results in a mixed X-ray image and this paper deals with the problem of separating this mixed image. Using the visible color images (RGB images) from each side of the painting, we propose a new Neural Network architecture, based upon 'connected' auto-encoders, designed to separate the mixed X-ray image into two simulated X-ray images corresponding to each side...

Background and Objectives : The aim of this study was to retrospectively analyze the duration of treatment and the number of dental radiographs taken during endodontic treatment (endo-t) of young permanent teeth (YPT). Materials and Methods : Age, gender, affected tooth number, apex status, duration of treatment and dental radiographs taken during this period were retrospectively evaluated in pediatric patients aged 6-15 years who presented to the pedodontic department for endo-t of anterior YPT. Data were analyzed with Kruskal Wallis H, Dunn and Pearson chi-square tests...

INTRODUCTION: Subperiosteal orbital abcess is a rarely reported complication of odontogenic infections and can be associated visual impairment and neurological symptoms. Because of fast infection spreading, delay in diagnosis and treatment can result in permanent damage. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 55-year old presented with a right-sided subperiosteal orbital abscess originating from a decayed first upper molar. The associated loss of vision improved only after a extraoral surgical drainage...

Endodontics has gone through many changes in the past several years. Electronic apex locators and surgical microscopes have taken a lot of the guess work out of doing root canal. Digital radiograpy has expanded our diagnostic abilities. Ultrasonic intrumentation and the advent of new filing systems have increased the efficacy of canal cleaning. There have also been some major refinements in how we can now obturate canals. Apicoectomies can now be performed with refined ultrasonic root end preparations, and we have increased our ability to better seal root ends with new filling materials...

A study of the rates of repeat radiography in two hospitals in the Cape Peninsula was undertaken. The relationship between these rates and the type of examination as well as the contributing factors was established. The total frequencies for the two hospitals varied from 10,1% to 14%. The predominant reasons for 78% of repeat radiographs were over-exposure, under-exposure and positioning.

Attention is drawn to the pioneering contribution of Dr Henry A. de Lautour to the practice of radiology in New Zealand and a brief sketch of his life and work is recorded. Information has been gathered from one of his patients who still possesses a copy of a radiograpy taken by Dr de Lautour in 1889, just four years after the discovery of x-rays. A 75-year follow-up radiograph shows that all but one of the lead pellets still remain in his hand.
