Microwave rotational spectra of eleven isotopomers of the Ne(3)-NH(3) van der Waals tetramer were measured using a pulsed jet, Balle-Flygare type Fourier transform microwave spectrometer. The transitions measured fall between 4 and 17 GHz and correspond to the ground internal rotor state of the weakly bound complex. The (20)Ne(3)- and (22)Ne(3)-containing species are symmetric top molecules while the mixed (20)Ne(2)(22)Ne- and (20)Ne(22)Ne(2)-isotopomers are asymmetric tops. For each of the deuterium-containing isotopomers, a tunneling splitting was observed due to the inversion of NH(3) within the tetramer...

A reliable way to determine the purity of the kinetically precipitated, noncrystalline lacunary polyoxoanion alpha-P(2)W(15)O(56)(12-) has been developed, namely, the conversion of alpha-P(2)W(15)O(56)(12-) into the tri-Nb(5+)- and V(5+)-containing polyoxoanions P(2)W(15)Nb(3)O(62)(9-) and P(2)W(15)V(3)O(62)(9-), respectively, followed by quantitative analysis of their purity by (31)P-NMR prior to recrystallization. With this previously unappreciated, straightforward alpha-P(2)W(15)O(56)(12-) purity-assessment methodology in hand, the five reported literature syntheses of alpha-P(2)W(15)O(56)(12-) are investigated with an emphasis on understanding the effects of the five differing variables within these syntheses (the amount of Na(2)CO(3) base, the rate of addition of the base, the reaction temperature, the reaction scale, and the product drying method)...

PURPOSE: Despite their common use in cardiac surgery, few studies have evaluated the reproducibility of the Thromboelastograph (TEG), of the Sonoclot (SCT), and of the activated coagulation time with celite (ACT-C) or kaolin (ACT-K) measured with the Hemochron, in clinical conditions of on-site monitoring of hemostasis. This study determined the reproducibility of those measurements, and evaluated the ability of various devices to substitute for the ACT-C. METHODS: Blood samples collected from 20 volunteers and 21 patients undergoing myocardial revascularization were analyzed in the two channels of the TEG, in two SCT and four Hemochron analyzers...

OBJECT: The factors involved in the development of adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) after severe head injury were studied. The presence of ARDS complicates the treatment of patients with severe head injury, both because hypoxia causes additional injury to the brain and because therapies that are used to protect the lungs and improve oxygenation in patients with ARDS can reduce cerebral blood flow (CBF) and increase intracranial pressure (ICP). In a recent randomized trial of two head-injury management strategies (ICP-targeted and CBF-targeted), a fivefold increase in the incidence of ARDS was observed in the CBF-targeted group...

Our purpose was to assess the role of serial CT in recently traumatized patients with clinically stable extra-axial intracranial hematomas (EACH) and a midline shift of less than 0.5 cm. A retrospective review of 91 imaging studies in 41 patients (with 45 EACH) was done to assess the time between trauma and CT; the presence and type of skull fracture; the volume, type, and location of the EACH; the presence of associated edema and/or contusion. Over a 19-day follow-up, 11% of the dense EACH increased in volume and 27% decreased...

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to analyze the use of thermal diffusion-cerebral blood flow (TD-CBF) monitoring as a continuous monitoring method for patients with head injuries in the intensive care unit. METHODS: The TD-CBF probe was placed on normal-appearing frontal or parietal cortex at the time of surgery to treat traumatic intracranial hematomas in 35 patients, and cortical cerebral blood flow (CBF) was monitored for up to 7 days after surgery. We compared TD-CBF values with global CBF values measured by the standard Kety-Schmidt technique, and we compared changes in TD-CBF with changes in jugular venous oxygen saturation observed during intracranial pressure elevations...

Bacillus pumilus PS213 was found to be able to release acetate from acetylated xylan. The enzyme catalyzing this reaction has been purified to homogeneity and characterized. The enzyme was secreted, and its production was induced by corncob powder and xylan. Its molecular mass, as determined by gel filtration, is 190 kDa, while sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed a single band of 40 kDa. The isoelectric point was found to be 4.8, and the enzyme activity was optimal at 55 degrees C and pH 8...

The cytomegalovirus (CMV) promoter is considered one of the strongest positive regulators leading to expression of higher levels of the thymidine kinase (TK) enzyme than the Rous Sarcoma virus (RSV) promoter in vitro and in vivo. Cell killing efficacy of adenovirus-mediated CMV promoter-driven herpes simplex virus (HSV) TK gene therapy has been found to be 2 to 10 times more effective than RSV driven HSV-TK gene therapy in vitro. In this study the impact of CMV- versus RSV-driven HSV-TK gene therapy on long-term survival of nude mice bearing human ovarian cancer has been evaluated using a prospective randomized experimental design...

Staphylococcus aureus is responsible for septicaemia and serious nosocomial infections. A rapid and specific identification of this species is of great importance in clinical microbiology. Current methods for S. aureus identification require a 18 to 24 h-incubation. We describe a two hour-identification method based on the detection of the staphylocoagulase, using human prothrombin and a chromogenic substrate. 242 staphylococcal strains (160 S. aureus, 82 coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS)) were collected from 4 French hospitals...

We investigated voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels of bovine adrenal medulla endothelial cells with the whole cell version of the patch-clamp technique. Depolarization elicited an inward current that was carried by Ca2+ and was composed of a transient (T) current, present in all the cells tested, and a sustained (L) current, present in 65% of them. We separated these currents and measured their individual kinetic and gating properties. The activation threshold for T current was approximately -50 mV, and its maximum amplitude was -49...

Intramedullary metastases are uncommon. We report two cases in patients with small cell bronchogenic cancer. The clinical diagnosis was supported by T1 magnetic resonance imaging after gadolinium injection. A unique medullary metastasis associated with other metastatic localizations was observed in the first patient and multiple intramedullary metastases alone in the second. These secondary intramedullary localizations were highly sensitive to chemotherapy after the first monthly cure in the first patient and after the third in the second patient...

Adenovirus(ADV) mediated thymidine kinase(TK) gene therapy followed by ganciclovir(GCV) administration is widely used in different types of cancer. ACV shares the same mechanism of selective cell killing in ADV/TK positive cells as GCV and can be used at 4.5 times higher doses in patients without significant side effects. An increased dose of TK substrate is associated with improved bystander effect and more efficient cell killing. Toxicity and cell killing efficacy were assessed using a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide(MTT) based assay in three ovarian cancer cell lines with different proliferation patterns...

Usually, schwannomas of the eight nerve arise from the vestibular nerve. Yet, the authors have operated from September 1993 to September 1995 three neuromas whose origin is certainly the cochlear nerve. Surgery was performed by retro-sigmoid approach magnified by endoscopic procedure of the cerebello-pontine angle before and after removing the tumor. We report here the cases and the literature is documented. Similar cases of observing cochlear neuromas at the moment of the procedure are exceptional. Because of more and more early diagnosis of these tumors, advances of microsurgery in ponto-cerebellar angle and endoscopic improvements in this area, observation of this kind of pathology could be more and more frequent...

A standard validation protocol adapted to the chromogenic assay of anti-Xa activity of low-molecular-weight heparins was used in a multicenter study to assess its suitability for comparing and evaluating analytical hemostasis systems. The protocol included: familiarization with the system (repeatability); assessment of limits of linearity, detection limits, and cross-contamination; and validation (reproducibility and accuracy of measurements of treated patients' plasmas). We calibrated the systems with the same range of lyophilized plasmas daily and evaluated repeatability and reproducibility by using a single batch of lyophilized plasmas at three anti-Xa activities...

Jugular venous oxygen saturation (SjvO2) measures the balance between cerebral oxygen delivery and cerebral oxygen consumption. Abnormalities that increase oxygen consumption (e.g., fever or seizures) or that decrease oxygen delivery (e.g., increased ICP, hypotension, hypoxia, hypocapnia, or anemia) can decrease SjvO2. Measuring SjvO2 continuously in the ICU in 177 patients with severe head injury, jugular venous desaturation (SjvO2 < 50%) was identified at least once in 39% of the patients. Approximately half of the episodes of desaturation were due to intracranial hypertension and half were due to systemic causes...

Because of the relative inaccessibility of known calciferol target tissues (i.e., intestine and bone), we examined fibroblasts derived from normal human skin and grown in tissue culture as a means of evaluating the interaction of 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol [1,25(OH)2D3] and its effector system. When dispersed, intact cells were used, nuclear uptake of 1,25-dihydroxy[23,24(n)3-H]cholecalciferol [1,25(OH)2[3H]D3) was temperature-dependent, optimal at 45 min at 37 degrees C, and saturable. In competition experiments with other calciferols, the 1,25(OH)2[3H]D3 uptake showed specificity indistinguishable from that reported for 1,25(OH)2D3 receptors from calciferol target tissues...
