BACKGROUND: Food allergies impose a large psychosocial burden, including mental, emotional, and social aspects, on both patients and their caregivers. Patients, caregivers, and their families often experience anxiety, isolation, and fear around food allergies. OBJECTIVE: To assess the real-world mental health burden of food allergies, using the Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) Patient Registry (NCT04653324). METHODS: Self-reported data from patients with food allergies, and their caregivers, were analyzed from the FARE Food Allergy History and Mental Health Concerns surveys...

BACKGROUND: Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is a feeding and eating disorder, characterized by limited variety and/or quantity of food intake impacting physical health and psychosocial functioning. Children with ARFID often present with a range of psychiatric and somatic symptoms, and therefore consult various pediatric subspecialties; large-scale studies mapping comorbidities are however lacking. To characterize health care needs of people with ARFID, we systematically investigated ARFID-related mental and somatic conditions in 616 children with ARFID and >30,000 children without ARFID...

INTRODUCTION: this study aimed to investigate the prevalence and management of food allergies (FA) and drug allergies (DA) in Morocco. Sparse and conflicting epidemiological data exist on the exact prevalence of allergies in the country. The rise in allergies can be attributed to various factors. METHODS: the study analyzed data from patients with suspected FA and DA who sought medical attention. Statistical tests were used to analyze the data, percentages were computed for qualitative variables, and for quantitative variables, medians or means accompanied by standard deviations (SD) were calculated...

Pollen-food allergy syndrome (PFAS) is a unique type of food allergy that specifically affects individuals with pollen allergy. In recent years, pollen allergy is increasingly and shows younger tendency. PFAS has also become a topic of interest in China. The characteristics of PFAS vary across regions and show obviously heterogeneity due to different pollen sensitization profile. Currently, diagnostic methods for PFAS in China are limited, which may lead to underdiagnosed and underrecognized of this syndrome, there are currently no accessible diagnostic criteria and procedures for clinical use...

BACKGROUND: Numerous children present with early wheeze symptoms, yet solely a subgroup develops childhood asthma. Early identification of children at risk is key for clinical monitoring, timely patient-tailored treatment, and preventing chronic, severe sequelae. For early prediction of childhood asthma, we aimed to define an integrated risk score combining established risk factors with genome-wide molecular markers at birth, complemented by subsequent clinical symptoms/diagnoses (wheezing, atopic dermatitis, food allergy)...

Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a non-IgE-mediated food allergy with gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. The development of international consensus guidelines for the diagnosis and management of FPIES in 2017 enabled us to compare patients worldwide, regardless of geographic variation in disease features. As a result, it has become clear that there is heterogeneity among patients with FPIES or that there are cases that partly fit the diagnostic criteria for FPIES but have different characteristics...

Pediatricians and allergists have noted a recent increase in cases of food allergy and anaphylaxis to peanuts and nuts, affecting very young children with worrying consequences in terms of quality of life. Children suffering from persistent cow's milk protein allergies that do not heal spontaneously are at very high risk of a fatal accident. Based on the findings of these studies, recommendations for primary prevention are made.

Because of their weight and size, children are much more sensitive to environmental pollution than adults. They breathe, drink and eat more, and therefore absorb more potentially toxic substances, as the European Environment Agency points out. Challenges therefore lie ahead in a number of areas. As soon as pregnancy is announced, prevention and awareness-raising workshops are offered at the three Trousseau-Tenon-Pitié-Salpétrière maternity units of the Sorbonne Université-Paris hospital group of the Assistance publique-Hôpitaux de Paris...

Objective The 'two-hit' hypothesis theorizes that early life allergic sensitisation and respiratory infection interact to increase asthma risk. Methods We sought to determine in a high allergy risk birth cohort whether interactions between early life allergic sensitisation and respiratory infection were associated with increased risk for asthma at ages 6-7 years and 18 years. Allergic sensitisation was assessed at 6, 12, and 24 months by skin prick testing to 3 food and 3 aeroallergens. Respiratory infection was defined as reported "cough, rattle, or wheeze" and assessed 4-weekly for 15 months, at 18 months, and age 2 years...

BACKGROUND: There are increasing numbers of metabolomic studies in food allergy (FA) and asthma, which, however, are predominantly limited by cross-sectional designs, small sample size, and being conducted in European populations. OBJECTIVE: To identify metabolites which are unique to and shared by children with FA and/or asthma in a racially diverse prospective birth cohort (the Boston Birth Cohort). METHODS: Mass spectrometry-based untargeted metabolomic profiling was performed using venous plasma collected in early childhood (N=811)...

PURPOSE: Adenotonsillar hypertrophy (ATH) is a medical condition characterized by the enlargement or swelling of the tonsils. The role of allergy in ATH has not been persuasively evidenced. Therefore, we investigated the state of humoral immunity and the presence of specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) in tissues and sera in children suffering from TH. METHODS: According to the skin prick test (SPT) result, 44 ATH children were divided into the atopic and non-atopic groups...

Pediatric food allergy remains commonplace, despite the advancement in our understanding of risk factors and prevention modalities for the condition. Early allergen introduction, a dietary intervention, has been endorsed by professional societies globally as an effective primary preventive measure, yet awareness among medical professionals and parents is lacking. Alongside food allergen introduction, overall nutrition, such as diet diversity, also plays an important role in allergy prevention. To address both food allergen introduction and overall nutrition, dietitians play a pivotal role in the dissemination and education of current guidelines to caregivers...

The gut microbiota plays an important role in maintaining human health, as well as in the development of various pathologies, as indicated by a large amount of research. One of the manifestations of an imbalance in the gut microbiome composition is the appearance of various diseases or immune reactions, in particular, atopic dermatitis (AD) and/or food allergies (FA). In this research, using 16S NGS sequencing, it was found that the gut microbiome of children with food allergies and children with atopic dermatitis can be characterized as having higher inflammatory potential...

We report an unusual case of anaphylaxis induced by the lysozyme-containing over-the-counter-drug Lysopaine®, which contains 20 mg lysozyme hydrochloride and 1.5 mg cetylpyridinium chloride, in a 9-year-old child with allergy to hen's egg as well as multiple IgE-mediated food allergies. The involvement of lysozyme was confirmed by positive skin prick tests for Lysopaine® and the presence of specific IgE against lysozyme. Our case highlights the importance of properly educating allergic patients to recognize allergens, even minor ones...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Over the past two decades, food allergy prevention strategies have shifted from 'delayed introduction' to 'no delayed introduction' to 'early introduction' of allergenic foods. This article reviews important research in this field published in the early 2020s to support future strategies for food allergy prevention. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent randomized controlled trials (RCTs), systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and real-world studies have reported that early allergenic food introduction, especially peanut and egg, are effective for preventing food allergies...
