OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine the occurrence of complications before and after the treatment of facial fractures, as well as the impact of the factors on the treatment results and evaluation of their relationships. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a prospective case-control study comprising 90 patients aged between 18 and 65 with facial fractures. Depending on the treatment method, patients were divided into three groups: those treated surgically using a transcutaneous approach, those treated surgically using a transmucosal approach, and those treated conservatively (control group)...

BACKGROUND: The most widely used fixation system for transtrochanteric fractures is the dynamic hip screw system, which has a failure prevalence of 10 to 17% and it is associated with the presence of clinical and radiographic factors. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of clinical and radiographic factors with the failure of the screw system in post-operative patients for transtrochanteric hip fracture. MATERIAL Y METHODS: A case-control study was carried out...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Synthesis with cannulated screws is one of the accepted methods in femoral neck fractures, although its optimal configuration is a subject in continuous debate. The main objective was to compare the results of the patient with a femoral neck fracture fixed with three screws in triangle and inverted triangle configuration in the frontal plane. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective and comparative study of 53 patients with femoral neck fracture, operated between 2015 and 2022 with fixation with three cannulated screws, 22 with a triangle configuration (triangle group) and 31 in an inverted triangle (inverted triangle group)...

The primary objectives of this study were to quantify the postoperative infection rate of internal fixation of tibial plateau fractures (TPF) and to identify the risk factors for this. INTRODUCTION: The main complication of percutaneous iliosacral screw fixation is implant malposition, which can lead to vascular and nerve damage. The anatomical variability of the sacrum can make screw insertion difficult under fluoroscopic guidance. Among the methods described to improve the accuracy of this technique, stands out the use of computed tomography (CT). The aim of this study is to compare the results of iliosacral screw insertion with fluoroscopy or CT navigation. METHODOLOGY: Retrospective cohort study of 66 iliosacral screws in 56 patients during 11 years...

A spontaneous rupture of the extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon after a fracture of the distal radius is a known complication in adults. In contrast, there are a paucity of reports concerning EPL tendon ruptures in children and adolescents. The authors present a case of a spontaneous rupture of the EPL tendon in a 15-year-old girl after a non-displaced distal radius fracture. The patient had no predisposing factors including rheumatoid arthritis or steroid injection. During surgery, the EPL tendon was found to be ruptured at the extensor retinaculum (third compartment)...

The ilioinguinal approach described by Emile Letournel in 1961 allows an extensive exposure of the anterior elements of the pelvis and acetabular fractures involving the anterior wall and/or column, pubic symphysis, and sacroiliac joint. It also facilitates a rapid recovery of muscle function and leaves a cosmetic scar.

INTRODUCTION: Spinopelvic dissociation is an uncommon injury, but, at the same time, very serious, since it can associate important complications with high morbidity and mortality. Its low frequency means that the experience of the specialists who have to deal with it is often very limited. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the treatment indications based in classifications and surgery techniques. METHOD: A search for scientific articles from high-impact journals was performed through international databases, such as Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Science Direct and OVID...

We report retrospectively a series of four cases involving the successful use of the recently described parascapular sub-iliocostalis plane block (PSIP), for lateral-posterior rib fractures. The efficacy of the PSIP block may potentially depend on different mechanisms of action: (1) direct action in the fracture site by craniocaudal myofascial spread underneath the erector spinae muscle (ESM); (2) spread to deep layers through tissue disruption caused by trauma, to reach the proximal intercostal nerves; (3) medial spread below the ESM, to reach the posterior spinal nerves; and (4) lateral spread in the sub-serratus (SS) plane to reach the lateral cutaneous branches of the intercostal nerves; while avoiding significant negative hemodynamic effects and other possible complications associated to other techniques leading that the PSIP may be considered an alternative in some clinical scenarios to the Erector Spinae Plane block or the Paravertebral block...

Introduction Treatment of metastatic vertebral fractures without neural compression is performed with percutaneous cementation techniques. The increase in intratumoral pressure by these techniques can send tumour cells into the bloodstream. To prevent this dissemination and improve pain treatment, ablation techniques have been introduced that would allow the creation of a cavity in the tumour prior to cementation or directly necrosing the metastasis when its size is small. Material We present the experience with ablation of two hospitals and two different ablation techniques...
