BACKGROUND: Pediatric oncology patients undergoing cancer treatment can often have numerous and recalcitrant cutaneous warts due to their underlying immunosuppression. There are little published data on the optimal management of warts in pediatric oncology patients undergoing active cancer treatment compared to patients having completed treatment. Our objective was to analyze the clinical course of warts treated within this patient population at Boston Children's Hospital over a 10-year period...

OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and risk of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Specifically, our study aimed to test the hypothesis that HPV vaccination may also induce trained immunity, which would potentially reduce the risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and improve clinical outcomes. BACKGROUND: Several vaccines have been reported to trigger non-specific immune reactions that could offer protection from heterologous infections...

An acral fibrochondromyxoid tumor is a newly described type of benign soft tissue neoplasm that presents as a single nodular lesion on a finger or toe. There has only been one previous report on this tumor, a case series that described the initial pathologic and clinical findings; however, details on clinical history, physical examination, and outcome are unknown. In this report, we describe a case of a 39-year-old male who presented with a painful enlarging mass involving the distal right 3rd finger and hyponychium...

Background A wart is a mucocutaneous illness caused by the growth of HPV-infected skin or mucosal cells. Intralesional immunotherapy makes use of the immune system's ability to identify injected antigens, which might cause a delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction not just to the antigen but also to the wart virus. This, in turn, improves the immune system's ability to identify and eliminate HPV not just at the treated wart but also at distant places, as well as prevent recurrences. Aims and objectives To study the efficacy of the intralesional measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine in verruca vulgaris and its side effects...

A verruca is a human papillomavirus-associated infection of the mucosal or cutaneous epithelium. Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma is an invasive skin cancer that commonly occurs on sun-exposed locations. Human papillomavirus infection has also been demonstrated to be a cocarcinogen, along with ultraviolet radiation, in the pathogenesis of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma. A 63-year-old man presented with a verrucous nodule of nine months duration on his dorsal left hand. The clinical differential diagnosis included a wart and a small punch biopsy of the lesion showed a verruca...

Periungual wart is a kind of verruca vulgaris that occurs alongside or underlying the nails, which is challenging to treat and prone to recurrence, seriously affecting the quality of patients' life. We report a 6-year-old boy with periungual warts who had experienced various treatments with no improvement and even worsening. Therefore, we tried to treat the patient with local hyperthermia which uses a patented device that has an infrared emission source. The heat generated by infrared rays acts on the local skin surface...

BACKGROUND: Skin cancers are the most common malignancies diagnosed worldwide. While the early detection and treatment of pre-cancerous and cancerous skin lesions can dramatically improve outcomes, factors such as a global shortage of pathologists, increased workloads, and high rates of diagnostic discordance underscore the need for techniques that improve pathology workflows. Although AI models are now being used to classify lesions from whole slide images (WSIs), diagnostic performance rarely surpasses that of expert pathologists...

INTRODUCTION: Nearly half of organ transplants occur annually in patients with Fitzpatrick skin phototypes (Fitz type) III-VI. Organ transplant recipients (OTRs) are at risk for sequelae of chronic immunosuppression, of which skin cancer is common. As literature regarding skin cancer risk is largely conducted in OTRs with Fitz types I and II, we aimed to further characterize the incidence and risk factors for skin cancer in OTRs with higher Fitz types. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of OTRs with Fitz types III-VI evaluated by dermatology between 1 January 2012 and 1 June 2022...

Various therapeutic options are available for verruca. While physical destruction may be associated with scarring, immunotherapy may be effective in treating warts through stimulating body immune response. The objective of the study was to compare the efficacy, safety, and outcome of Candida antigen vs diphencyprone (DPCP) in the treatment of warts. Fifty patients were randomly assigned to receive either intralesional Candida antigen every 3 weeks or weekly DPCP application. Both treatments were applied only to the mother wart...

Background: Verruca vulgaris is a viral infection with high recurrence rates and is very difficult to treat. It occurs due to the ability of the virus to evade immune recognition. This immune evasion by the human papillomavirus (HPV) can be circumvented by injecting HPV antigens subcutaneously and inducing inflammation and a systemic immune response. Falkner technique is an approved technique for the treatment of warts. In this observational study, we analyzed the recovery rate among patients undergoing this technique as part of their routine treatment...

Skin diseases are common in children. However, the prevalence of childhood skin diseases in Japan has not been reported extensively. In this study, dermatologists conducted face-to-face examinations of primary school children over a 10-year period to determine the prevalence of each skin disease. Atopic dermatitis (AD, 12.3%) was the most common disease among first graders, followed by eczema other than AD (9.7%), molluscum contagiosum (1.9%), and verruca vulgaris (1.1%). Among sixth graders, acne vulgaris was most common (9...

A 71-year-old female with breast cancer presented with a generalized papular rash that began following the initiation of rebastinib. Examination revealed scattered pink to skin-colored verrucous papules on the forehead, extremities, and back. A biopsy showed hyperkeratosis, hypergranulosis, digitated epidermal hyperplasia, and dilated blood vessels at the tips of dermal papillae consistent with verruca vulgaris. The patient discontinued rebastinib due to muscle weakness and the lesions resolved. Rebastinib is an antineoplastic agent that targets several tyrosine kinases...
