Bone metastases from liver cancer are rare. We report two cases of bone metastases revealing HBV-induced HCC. A 26-year-old african man presented with 4 months of low back pain in the context of general deterioration. Examination revealed a lumbar spinal syndrome and hepatomegaly. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a multinodular liver, and a CT scan of the spine revealed osteolytic lesions. Biological tests revealed a hepatic cytolysis syndrome, hepatic cholestasis and hepatocellular insufficiency. Alpha foetoprotein levels were elevated and hepatitis B serology was positive...

For patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and cirrhosis, the rupture of thin lymphatic vessel walls leads to a profuse outflow of lymph fluid. Typically, chyloperitoneum tends to precede the development of chylothorax in patients with cancer. The present study describes the case of a male patient with hepatocellular carcinoma who developed chylothorax without chyloperitoneum. Computed tomography showed lymphatic system developmental abnormalities with a large volume of leaked lymph fluid. Multiple thoracic duct ligations (TDLs) failed, but a side-to-end lymphatic venous anastomosis (LVA) surgery resolved the symptoms...

BACKGROUND: Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is the predominant cause of hepatocellular carcinoma in west Africa, yet data on the incidence of HBV-related hepatocellular carcinoma remain scarce. We aimed to describe the uptake and early outcomes of systematic ultrasound-based hepatocellular carcinoma screening in SEN-B, which is a prospective HBV cohort in Senegal. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, we included treatment-naive, HBsAg-positive individuals who were referred to the two infectious diseases clinics (the Department of Tropical and Infectious Diseases and Ambulatory Treatment Center) at Fann University Hospital of Dakar, Senegal, between Oct 1, 2019, and Oct 31, 2022...

BACKGROUND: During systemic therapy, the management of portal hypertension (PH)-related complications is vital. This study aimed to clarify factors associated with the incidence and exacerbation of PH-related complications, including the usefulness of contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) in the management of PH-related complications during systemic therapy. METHODS: A total of 669 patients who received systemic therapy as first-line treatment (443 patients for sorafenib, 131 for lenvatinib, and 90 for atezolizumab/bevacizumab [ATZ/BEV]) were enrolled in this retrospective study...

INTRODUCTION: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) are two primary liver cancers. Synchronous occurrence of both types is rare. Here, we present a case of synchronous, double primary liver cancer in a patient who underwent successful surgical resection. PRESENTATION OF A CASE: A 77-year-old woman presented with two suspected liver tumors. Dynamic computed tomography (CT) and ethoxybenzyl-magnetic resonance imaging revealed two lesions, one in hepatic segments S8/4 and another in S5...

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), a highly aggressive primary liver cancer arising from the bile duct epithelium, represents a substantial proportion of hepatobiliary malignancies, posing formidable challenges in diagnosis and treatment. Notably, the global incidence of intrahepatic CCA has seen a rise, necessitating a critical examination of diagnostic and management strategies, especially due to presence of close imaging mimics such as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and combined hepatocellular carcinoma-cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-CCA)...

Continuously holding its position as the sixth most common cause of cancer and the third leading cause of cancer death, globally, Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) remains as a healthcare priority. Production of various substances may result into systemic or metabolic complications, often known as paraneoplastic phenomena of HCC. A 56-year-old male with history of untreated chronic hepatitis B arrived with generalized weakness and intermittent headache in the last two days prior to admission. Laboratory findings demonstrated elevated hemoglobin (20...

PURPOSE: Large animal models are still used in many studies because of their likeness to humans. It has not been documented that regular-sized conventional farm-breed pigs, generally bred for meat production, can be used to generate hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) animal models. The goal of this study was to investigate how N-diethylnitrosamine (DENA) and phenobarbital (PB) together can generate HCC in ordinary farmed pigs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Conventional domestic swine ( Sus scrofa domesticus ) were used...

In liver transplantation, the primary concern is to ensure an adequate future liver remnant (FLR) volume for the donor, while selecting a graft of sufficient size for the recipient. The living donor-resection and partial liver segment 2-3 transplantation with delayed total hepatectomy (LD-RAPID) procedure offers a potential solution to expand the donor pool for living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). We report the first case involving a cirrhotic patient with autoimmune hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma, who underwent left lobe LDLT using the LD-RAPID procedure...

Liver malignancies, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma and metastasis, stand as prominent contributors to cancer mortality. Much of the data from abdominal computed tomography images remain underused by radiologists. This study explores the application of machine learning in differentiating tumor tissue from healthy liver tissue using radiomics features. Preoperative contrast-enhanced images of 94 patients were used. A total of 1686 features classified as first-order, second-order, higher-order, and shape statistics were extracted from the regions of interest of each patient's imaging data...

Conventional transarterial chemoembolization (cTACE) is a common treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), often with unsatisfactory local controls. Combining cTACE with radiotherapy shows a promise for unresectable large HCC, with proton therapy preserving healthy liver tissue. However, the proton therapy benefits are subject to the accuracy of tissue relative stopping power (RSP) prediction. The RSP values are typically derived from computed tomography (CT) images using stoichiometric calibration. Lipiodol deposition significantly increases CT numbers in liver regions of post-cTACE...
