Despite major advances in early detection and prognosis, chemotherapy resistance is a major hurdle in the battle against breast cancer. Identifying predictive markers and understanding the mechanisms are key steps to overcoming chemoresistance. Mitochondrial respiration is regulated in CD8(+) T cells during the transition from naive to effector and memory cells, but mechanisms controlling this process have not been defined. Mitochondria contribute to macrophage immune function through the generation of reactive oxygen species, a byproduct of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. MCJ (also known as DnaJC15) is a mitochondrial inner membrane protein identified as an endogenous inhibitor of respiratory chain complex I.
