The probability of a false decision on conformity of a multicomponent material due to measurement uncertainty is discussed when test results are correlated. Specification limits of the components' content of such a material generate a multivariate specification interval/domain. When true values of components' content and corresponding test results are modelled by multivariate distributions (e.g. by multivariate normal distributions), a total global risk of a false decision on the material conformity can be evaluated based on calculation of integrals of their joint probability density function...

This paper shows the ability of simple modified screen-printed devices for the electrochemical detection of ascorbic acid in different samples, including serum samples. Even if the presence of uric acid does not greatly affect the analysis of ascorbic acid using screen-printed carbon electrodes modified by gold nanoparticles, dopamine must be considered an interferent. Thus, the joint determination of the three compounds has been set out using methods of multivariate calibration. The validated models, built by partial least squares regressions, have been used to determine the concentration of ascorbic acid, dopamine and uric acid of spiked serum samples, with successful results...

Near-Infrared spectroscopy (NIRs) coupled to chemometrics was investigated for the first time as a new tool for the analysis of black toners to evaluate its application in forensic cases. Ten black toners from four manufacturers were included in this study and the acquired spectra were compared in order to differentiate toners. Multivariate statistical analysis based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was considered to develop a model of comparison of toners in questioned documents. Results demonstrated the capabilities of the approach NIR/Chemometrics to correctly identify toners when printed on different papers and to be not affected by the printing process...

Infrared analysis of proteins and polysaccharides by the well known KBr disk technique is notoriously frustrated and defeated by absorbed water interference in the important amide and hydroxyl regions of spectra. This interference has too often been overlooked or ignored even when the resulting distortion is critical or even fatal, as in quantitative analyses of protein secondary structure, because the water has been impossible to measure or eliminate. Therefore, a new chemometric method was devised that corrects spectra of materials in KBr disks by mathematically eliminating the water interference...

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for phosmet insecticide were synthesized by batch polymerization. The affinity of functional monomers to phosmet was tested using an original method involving an electrochemical biosensor based on acetylcholinesterase inhibition. It was demonstrated that association of phosmet with appropriate functional monomers resulted in a decrease of enzyme inhibition. Using this method, it was shown that N,N-methylenebis(acrylamide) displayed the highest interactions with phosmet using DMSO as solvent...

When using circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy for quantitative analysis, the samples to be analyzed must be free of light-absorbing interferences. However, in real-world samples, the presence of background absorbers is practically unavoidable. The difference in the matrices between the real-world samples to be analyzed and the standard samples (on which either univariate or multivariate calibration model was built) would result in systematic errors in the quantification results of CD spectroscopy. In this contribution, a novel calibration strategy for quantitative CD spectroscopic analysis was proposed...

Cisplatin is a first-line chemotherapeutic for the treatment of a wide variety of cancers since its discovery in the 1960s. Although various techniques have been reported for the measurement of total platinum in biological matrices, such as inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and derivatization procedures, a specific, sensitive and robust assay for the quantification of intact cisplatin is still lacking. Therefore, we present a rapid, selective, sensitive, and reliable UHPLC-MS/MS based method for the determination of intact cisplatin in human plasma in support of a Phase II clinical trial...

Calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) is a widely available fertilizer composed of ammonium nitrate (AN) mixed with some form of calcium carbonate such as limestone or dolomite. CAN is also frequently used to make homemade explosives. The potential of using elemental profiling and chemometrics to match both pristine and reprocessed CAN fertilizers to their factories of origin for use in future forensic investigations was examined. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to determine the concentrations of 64 elements in 125 samples from 11 CAN stocks from 6 different CAN factories...

Cisplatin (CP) is a potent and widely used chemotherapeutic agent. However, the clinical benefits of CP are compromised because it elicits nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity. In this study, we investigated the nephroprotective effects of the phytochemical genipin (GP) isolated from the gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides) fruit, using a murine model of CP-induced nephropathy. GP pretreatment attenuated the CP-induced renal tissue injury by diminishing the serum blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, and cystatin C levels, as well as those of kidney injury molecule-1...

Surface complexation modeling, isothermal titration calorimetry, and batch adsorption were employed to characterize the adsorption of Cu onto montmorillonite, Pseudomonas putida X4, and their composites at mass ratios of 2:1, 6:1, and 12:1, respectively. Different enthalpy values were found for Cu adsorption to permanent (-6.43kJ/mol) and variable charge sites (8.51kJ/mol) on montmorillonite. The component additivity (CA) method was used to predict the adsorption of Cu on the composites by combining end member models for montmorillonite and P...

N-doped porous carbon sheets (NPCS) resulted from wheat straws are fabricated through using molten salts via the carbonization-functionalization progress, which show unique hierarchical structure, large pore volume and high surface area with affluent micropores. Results indicate that there exist many hierarchical pores consisting of the single carbon sheet with ultrathin nature, owing to the template role of molten salt mixtures at high temperature. Such superior structure can bring about desired performance of adsorption capacity of 82...

BACKGROUND: In patients with left ventricular heart failure (HF), the development of pulmonary hypertension (PH) is common and represents a strong predictor of death. Despite recent advances in the pathophysiological understanding there is as yet no prospect of cure of this deadly clinical entity and the majority of patients continue to progress to right ventricular failure and die. Furthermore, there is no single medical treatment currently approved for PH related to HF. There is, therefore an urgent unmet need to identify novel pharmacological agents that will prevent the progressive increased or reverse the elevated pulmonary arterial pressures while enhancing cardiac performance in HF...

We modelled the effects of past and expected future changes in climate (temperature, precipitation), CO2 concentration, nitrogen deposition (N) and ozone (O3) exposure (phytotoxic ozone dose, POD) on carbon (C) sequestration by European forest ecosystems for the period 1900-2050. Tree C sequestration was assessed by using empirical response functions, while soil C sequestration was simulated with the process-based model VSD, combined with the RothC model. We evaluated two empirical growth responses to N deposition (linear and non-linear) and two O3 exposure relationships (linear function with total biomass or net annual increment)...

Secondary forests and coffee agroecosystems are considered good alternatives for conservation of a high capacity for water filtration in the soil where tropical montane cloud forests (TMCF) once grew; however, it is not clear which characteristics of the vegetation modulate the field saturated hydraulic conductivity of the soil (Kfs) and whether these characteristics persist in such derived systems. Here, we explore how changes in vegetation between secondary forests and coffee agroecosystems have consequences for the average value and spatial variation of litter thickness and root biomass, and whether these differences can explain the Kfs and its spatial distribution...
