The surface modification of amorphous carbon nanospheres (ACNs) through templates has attracted great attention due to its great success in improving the electrochemical properties of lithium storage materials. Herein, a safe methodology with toluene as a soft template is employed to tailor the nanostructure, resulting in ACNs with tunable surface pores. Extensive characterizations through transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms elucidate the impact of surface pore modifications on the external structure, morphology, and surface area...

Constructing an environmentally friendly and efficient electrocatalyst holds important and profound significance for energy-efficient hydrogen production. Replacing the oxygen evolution reaction with a lower potential urea oxidation reaction (UOR) may save energy in water electrolysis to produce hydrogen. The UOR is characterized by its high energy barrier, which results in slow reaction kinetics. In this study, we introduced Ba(OH)2 into Ni(OH)2 to form uniform nanosheets. Due to the introduction of Ba2+ , the lattice expansion of Ni(OH)2 was triggered, leading to significant improvement in UOR activity...

Benzene, a high-volume chemical, is produced from larger molecules by inefficient and environmentally harmful processes. Recent changes in hydrocarbon feedstocks from oil to gas motivate research into small molecule upgrading. For example, the cyclotrimerization of acetylene reaction has been demonstrated on Pd, Pd alloy, and Cu surfaces and catalysts, but they are not 100% selective to benzene. We discovered that acetylene can be converted to benzene with 100% selectivity on the Ag(111) surface. Our temperature programmed desorption experiments reveal a threshold acetylene surface coverage of ∼one monolayer, above which benzene is formed...

INTRODUCTION: Previously reported preparation methods of Ginkgo biloba leaf extract (EGBL) have mainly focused on the enrichment of flavonoid glycosides (FG) and terpene trilactones (TT), which led to the underutilization of G. biloba leaves (GBL). OBJECTIVES: To make full use of GBL, in this study, a comprehensive optimization strategy for preparing EGBL by macroporous resin column chromatography was proposed and applied to enrich FG, TT, and shikimic acid (SA) from GBL...

Synthetic dyes are prevalent in aquatic environments, they have high toxicities, are non-degradable, and accumulate in the water. The removal of Crystal violet (CV) is carried out using batch experiments on the Salsola Tetragona (ST) plant as a novel adsorbent. The prepared adsorbent was analyzed by various methods (MEB, EDX, IRTF and PZC), to support its applicability as adsorbent. The adsorption study of CV is performed by optimizing the parameters affecting the adsorption process. The adsorption kinetics study is represented by pseudo-second-order (R2 = 0...

Dye pollution in water caused by excessive discharge of industrial effluent has become a major environmental problem in recent decades because of its irreversible effects on human health. In this study, low-cost carbon-based adsorbents synthesized from Oleaster seed (OS) were prepared in three forms of powder (PAC), film (FAC), and granule (GAC) and used for the removal of methylene blue dye. The properties of the synthesized adsorbents were characterized by SEM-EDX, BET, XPS and FTIR analyses. The maximum adsorption capacity (qmax ) of PAC, FAC, and GAC adsorbents were obtained as 68...

Strong and oriented electric fields are known to influence structure as well as reactivity. The strong electric field (EF) between the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and graphite has been used to modulate two-dimensional (2D) polymerization of aryl boronic acids where switching the polarity of the substrate bias enabled reversible transition between self-assembled molecular networks of monomers and crystalline 2D polymer (2DP) domains. Here, we untangle the different factors influencing the EF-mediated (de)polymerization of a boroxine-based 2DP on graphite...

The improvement of the stability and adsorption properties of materials on targets in sample pre-treatment has long been an objective. Extensive efforts have been made to achieve this goal. In this work, metal-organic framework Ni-MOF precursors were first synthesized by solvothermal method using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as an ideal templating agent, stabiliser and nanoparticle dispersant. After carbonization and acid washing, the nanoporous carbon microspheres material (Ni@C-acid) was obtained. Compared with the material without acid treatment (Ni@C), the specific surface area, pore volume, adsorption performance of Ni@C-acid were increased...

Current guideline recommends the use of two identification methods for Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF) is now used for primary identification and may be sufficient for definitive identification of N. gonorrhoeae. The performance of three secondary tests (BactiCard, RapID NH and NET test) were compared using 45 bacterial isolates, including 37 Neisseria species. Electrolyte/electrode interfaces of room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) exhibit hysteretic responses to different applied potentials owing to the differences in the ion adsorption/desorption processes; the ion desorption requires excess potential, which reflects the activation energy of ion desorption. Thus far, the contributions of the ion adsorption energy and the activation barrier for ion desorption toward the ion-dependent excess potential have not been quantified. Herein, we report on our infrared-visible sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy study of the hysteretic responses of the anion adsorption/desorption at Pt electrode interfaces using neat, binary, and diluted RTILs composed of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium cations ([C4 mim]+ ) and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide ([TFSA]- ) and trifluoromethanesulfonate ([OTf]- ) anions...
