BACKGROUND: Previous research in nursing has found favorable results from the use of teaching methodologies alternative to lectures. One of the complementary methodologies used for university teaching is gamification, or the inclusion of game elements, creating a dynamic learning environment that allows the acquisition of knowledge and the development of other skills necessary for nursing students. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a gamification session on student satisfaction and knowledge scores in nursing students in simulated laboratory practice...

Gated radionuclide angiography and myocardial perfusion imaging were developed in the United States and Europe in the 1970's and soon adopted in Canadian centers. Much of the early development of nuclear cardiology in Canada was in Toronto, Ontario and was quickly followed by new programs across the country. Clinical research in Canada contributed to the further development of nuclear cardiology and cardiac PET. The Canadian Nuclear Cardiology Society (CNCS) was formed in 1995 and became the Canadian Society of Cardiovascular Nuclear and CT Imaging (CNCT) in 2014...

Issue:  A significant component of health professions education is focussed on students' exposure to the social determinants of health and the challenges that patients within the health care system face. An appropriate way to provide such exposure is through distributed clinical training. This usually entails students training in smaller groups along the continuum of care, away from tertiary academic hospitals. This also means students are away from their existing academic and social support systems. It is evident that knowledge and clinical skills alone are not sufficient to prepare students, they also need to be taught to critically reflect on how their own values and attitudes traverse their knowledge and skills to influence their practice as healthcare professionals...

The ubiquity and ease with which microbial cells disperse over space is a key concept in microbiology, especially in microbial ecology. The phenomenon prompted Baas Becking's famous "everything is everywhere" statement that now acts as the null hypothesis in studies that test the dispersal limitation of microbial taxa. Despite covering the content in lectures, exam performance indicated that the concepts of dispersal and biogeography challenged undergraduate students in an upper-level Microbial Ecology course...

BACKGROUND: Climate change is the greatest threat to human health. Medical students, as future health-care workers, are important in promoting sustainable behaviours, which are strongly associated with individuals' emotional responses to climate change. At Würzburg University Hospital (Würzburg, Germany), a one-term optional course (40 learning units) about planetary health and two lectures within the curricular course Environmental Medicine were introduced in 2021. We aimed to examine the effects of these courses on the emotions and motivations of students in acting against climate change...

A visiting surgeon described his disappointment with an aspect of the Mayo Clinic in 1914, stating that there was "the almost lack of anything that could be dignified by the term 'lecture.'" One year later, the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research was founded. By 1917, the foundation declared history of medicine a graduate-level subject, and history of medicine questions were included in final oral examinations. In 1920 and 1921, lectures were given on historical topics; however, these lectures petered out, and there were no historical lectures in the official curriculum of 1923 or 1924...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine whether a flipped classroom curriculum coupled with case-based learning would improve residents' perceptions of the learning environment, improve education outcomes, and increase faculty engagement. Research suggests that active learning yields better educational results compared with passive learning. However, faculty are more comfortable providing lectures that require only passive participation from learners. METHODS: A council was created to identify issues with the current format of the resident didactic curriculum and to redesign the neurosurgical curriculum and conference per Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements...

Online learning dexterity, or the ability to effortlessly adapt to online learning situations, has become critical since the COVID-19 pandemic, but its processes are not well-understood. Using grounded theory, this study develops a paradigm model of online learning dexterity from semi-structured interviews with 32 undergraduate and postgraduate students from a university in New Zealand. Through students' online learning experiences during the pandemic from 2020 to 2021, online learning dexterity is found to be how students make online learning 'just as good' as face-to-face learning by creating and adjusting five learning manoeuvres according to developing online learning circumstances...

We synthesized Au/Fe3 O4 microparticles. Initially, citrate-capped Fe3 O4 micro-sized particles were synthesized by the co-precipitation method with an excess amount of trisodium citrate. Gold ions were reduced on the surface of citrate-capped Fe3 O4 and grew as gold sub-microparticles with an average diameter of 210 nm on the surface. The characteristic SPR peak of gold nanoparticles on the surface of Fe3 O4 was detected at 584 nm, whereas the absorption in the near-infrared region was increased...

Despite the increasing relevance of statistics in health sciences, teaching styles in higher education are remarkably similar across disciplines: lectures covering the theory and methods, followed by application and computer exercises in given data sets. This often leads to challenges for students in comprehending fundamental statistical concepts essential for medical research. Both lecture and laboratory courses of biochemistry are important professional courses for undergraduates with biology related majors. Course optimization and update is crucial but challenging, especially for the laboratory course. Although taught separately, here we showed a strategy to bridge the two courses and promote the improvement of both. INTRODUCTION: The danger of diagnostic errors exists in daily medical practice, and doctors are required to avoid such errors as much as possible. Although various factors, including cognitive, system-related, and patient-related factors, are involved in the occurrence of diagnostic errors, the percentage of doctors with insufficient medical knowledge among those factors is extremely low. Therefore, lectures on diagnostic errors might also be useful for medical students without experience working as doctors...
