OBJECTIVES: To explore the value of multi-parametric MRI (mp-MRI) radiomic model for preoperative prediction of recurrence and/or metastasis (RM) as well as survival benefits in patients with rectal cancer. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 234 patients from two centers with histologically confirmed rectal adenocarcinoma was conducted. All patients were divided into three groups: training, internal validation (in-vad) and external validation (ex-vad) sets. In the training set, radiomic features were extracted from T2WI, DWI, and contrast enhancement T1WI (CE-T1) sequence...

A vaccine is a biological preparation that contains the antigen capable of stimulating the immune system to form the defense against pathogens. Vaccine development often confronts big challenges, including time/energy-consuming, low efficacy, lag to pathogen emergence and mutation, and even safety concern. However, these seem now mostly conquerable through constructing the advanced translational platforms that can make innovative vaccines, sometimes, potentiated with a distinct multifunctional VADS (vaccine adjuvant delivery system), as evidenced by the development of various vaccines against the covid-19 pandemic at warp speed...

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the neuronal and microvascular retinal and choroidal involvement in COVID-19 recovered patients using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA). METHODS: This observational cross-sectional study recruited patients recovered from COVID-19 and a group of healthy controls for comparisons. OCT (peripapillary scan and macular map) and OCTA (macular map) were performed to obtain: the central subfield thickness (CST), the macular volume (MV), the peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (pRNFL) thickness, the vessel area density (VAD), vessel length fraction (VLF), vessel diameter index (VDI) and fractal dimension (FD) of the superficial vascular plexus (SVP), intermediate capillary plexus (ICP) and deep capillary plexus (DCP), and the vessel density (VD), stromal density (SD) and vascular/stromal (V/S) ratio of the choriocapillaris (CC) and choroid (Ch)...

Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) have been increasingly used as a valid option to improve the prognosis and reduce the symptoms of end-stage heart failure. However, long-term complications, mostly infections and coagulation disorders, are frequent. We described the epidemiology and risk factors for nosocomial infections (NIs) in a cohort of adult patients who underwent continuous-flow LVAD implant between January 2010 and December 2017 in Turin, Italy. Secondary outcomes were the prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria and mortality...

The effects of hot air (HAD), vacuum (VAD) and conductive (CD) drying on the chemical and textural profiles of Cucurbita maxima pulp were investigated to find suitable drying conditions to avoid postharvest losses of pumpkin. The results showed that the drying methods had a significant effect ( p < 0.05) on the chemical and textural profiles of pumpkin pulp. The ash content was lower in VAD (up to 7.65%) than in HAD (up to 9.88%) and CD pulp (up to 9.21%). The samples of HAD, CD and VAD had a higher fat content, up to 3...

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD) are the two most common forms of dementia. However, their neuropsychological and pathological features often overlap, making it difficult to distinguish between AD and VaD. In addition to clinical consultation and laboratory examinations, clinical dementia diagnosis in Taiwan will also include Tc-99m-ECD SPECT imaging examination. Through machine learning and deep learning technology, we explored the feasibility of using the above clinical practice data to distinguish AD and VaD...

METHODS: We selected genome-wide association studies including 66,645 patients with allergic diseases and 12,281 patients with dementia, with statistical datasets derived from the FinnGen Consortium of European origin...

Ventricular assist devices (VADs) have been increasingly implanted in pediatric patients. Paracorporeal VADs are generally chosen when intracorporeal continuous (IC) devices are too large. Superiority between IC and paracorporeal pulsatile (PP) devices remains unclear in smaller pediatric patients. Our study analyzes outcomes of IC and PP VADs in pediatric patients who could be considered for either of these options. Using the Advanced Cardiac Therapies Improving Outcomes Network (ACTION) database, we identified children between 10 and 30 kg who received a VAD between June 2018 and September 2021...

Vascular dementia (VaD) is the second most common type of dementia after Alzheimer's disease. In our previous studies, we showed that wheat bran extract (WBE) reduced white matter damage in a rat VaD model and improved memory in a human clinical trial. However, starch gelatinization made the large-scale preparation of WBE difficult. To simplify the manufacturing process and increase efficacy, we attempted to find a decoction containing an optimum ratio of wheat bran, sliced citrus peel, and sliced jujube (WCJ)...

BACKGROUND: Vascular depression (VaD) is a depressive disorder closely associated with cerebrovascular disease and vascular risk factors. It remains underestimated owing to challenging diagnostics and limited information regarding the pathophysiological mechanisms of VaD. The purpose of this study was to analyze the proteomic signatures and identify the potential biomarkers with diagnostic significance in VaD. METHODS: Deep profiling of the serum proteome of 35 patients with VaD and 36 controls was performed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS)...

INTRODUCTION: Immune dysregulation persists in people with HIV (PWH) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) and may lead to accelerated vascular ageing and cardiovascular disease (CVD). While delayed time to initiation of ART has been linked to worse cardiovascular outcomes, the effect of ART initiation during acute infection on these outcomes is not well understood. INTRODUCTION: In Northern Europe, vacuum-assisted delivery (VAD) accounts for 6-15% of all deliveries; VAD is considered safe when conducted by adequately trained personnel. However, failed vacuum extraction can be harmful to both the mother and child. Therefore, the clinical performance in VAD must be assessed to guide learning, determine a performance benchmark, and evaluate the quality to achieve an overall high performance. We were unable to identify a pre-existing tool for evaluating the clinical performance in real-life vacuum-assisted births...

The nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain leucine-rich repeat and pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome contributes to the development of inflammatory diseases. Cryopyrin-associated periodic syndrome (CAPS) is an autoinflammatory disease caused by NLRP3 gene mutations that results in excessive IL-1β production. We previously identified isoliquiritigenin (ILG), a component of Glycyrrhiza uralensis extracts, as a potent inhibitor of the NLRP3 inflammasome. Here, we aimed to investigate whether ILG inhibits the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome caused by NLRP3 gene mutations...

Pathological changes in the hippocampus predispose to cognitive impairment and dementia. The role of hippocampal pericytes in dementia is largely unknown. BACKGROUND: Ventricular assist device (VAD) implant represents a therapeutic option for pediatric patients with end-stage heart failure (HF). Heart unloading by VAD can modify several molecular pathways underlying cardiac function in HF. Among them, the potential role of microRNA (miRNAs) in response to VAD implant is emerging. This study was aimed at investigating in HF pediatric patients the effect of VAD-modified miRNAs on the adiponectin (ADPN) system, known to exert cardioprotective actions...
