INTRODUCTION: Parents' and caregivers' non-evidence-based childhood fever management 'fever phobic' practices have remained relatively stable over more than 34 years despite successful educational interventions. This systematic review aimed to assess the information seeking behavior of caregivers managing fever in their children, as well as to compile the fever management practices undertaken by caregivers by investigating underlying factors influencing them. METHODS: The electronic databases Pubmed, CINAHL, Medline, and International Pharmaceutical Abstracts were searched using key terms including, fever, child, caregiver, and management...

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco contributes to the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among persons with human immunodeficiency virus (PWHs). Nonetheless, medications for tobacco use disorder are widely underused, particularly among PWHs. We sought to characterize the extent to which insurance barriers impacted access to medications for tobacco use disorder and, in comparison, to access to antiretroviral therapy (ART). METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of data on individuals enrolled in a randomized clinical trial to address tobacco use involving nicotine replacement therapy and, for some, additionally, varenicline or bupropion...

Receipt of nebulised pentamidine in people with HIV was audited to identify if individuals were appropriately receiving nebulised pentamidine, and whether national guidelines were being followed when prophylaxis was commenced and discontinued. Of 76 people with who received nebulised pentamidine, the main indication for starting nebulised pentamidine was a co-trimoxazole adverse drug reaction. Co-trimoxazole desensitization was not attempted before starting nebulised pentamidine. The main indication for stopping nebulised pentamidine prophylaxis was when immune reconstitution occurred...

Transitions of care often lead to medication errors and unnecessary healthcare utilization. Medication reconciliation has been repeatedly shown to reduce this risk. However, the great majority of evidence is limited to the provision of medication reconciliation within clinical trials and countries with well-established clinical pharmacy. Thus, this pragmatic, prospective, controlled trial evaluated the effectiveness of routine pharmacist-led medication reconciliation compared to standard care on medication errors and unplanned healthcare utilization in adult general medical patients hospitalized in a teaching hospital in Slovenia...

This research describes the synthesis by an environmentally-friendly method, microwave irradiation, development and analysis of three novel and one previously identified Schiff base derivative as a potential inhibitor of bovine xanthine oxidase (BXO), a key enzyme implicated in the progression of gout. Meticulous experimentation revealed that these compounds ( 10 , 9 , 4 , and 7 ) have noteworthy inhibitory effects on BXO, with IC50 values ranging from 149.56 µM to 263.60 µM, indicating their good efficacy compared to that of the standard control...

OBJECTIVE: Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (GCSF) products are often used in pediatric patients with malignant diagnoses to reduce the time that the patient is neutropenic. Long-acting GCSF products have been shown to be non-inferior to daily dosing of GCSF products, and are becoming more desired by patients and families. Insurance companies often require a prior authorization prior to approving the use of the long-acting GCSF products. This process has proven challenging leading to treatment delays and missed doses...

BACKGROUND: Chronic periodontitis is a prevalent oral health issue, affecting a substantial portion of the population. Infrabony defects, characterized by bone loss around teeth, are a hallmark of this condition and require surgical intervention to prevent further damage and tooth loss. Two commonly used surgical approaches are open flap debridement (OFD) and guided tissue regeneration (GTR).
