Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is an important health and economic burden to the cattle industry worldwide. Three bacterial pathogens frequently associated with BRD (Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni) can possess integrative and conjugative elements (ICEs), a diverse group of mobile genetic elements that acquire antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes (ARGs) and decrease the therapeutic efficacy of antimicrobial drugs. We developed a duplex recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) assay to detect up to two variants of ICEs in these Pasteurellaceae...

We meta-analyzed the diagnostic accuracy of rapid diagnostic tests (dipsticks) and loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method to detect Shigella species. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science and Google Scholar from inception to 2023 for studies reporting on the performance of Shigella dipstick and LAMP tests compared with culture or polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Our search identified 2618 studies, of which fourteen met the inclusion criteria for the systematic review. Ten studies covering 4056 tests (from twelve countries) were included in the meta-analysis...

BACKGROUND: Mercury (Hg) is a persistent pollutant occurring in the environment able to transition between different species. It can therefore be found in air, soil and water reservoirs becoming a present concern for the general population but also sensitive populations like pregnant women. Therefore, investigating organ-specific transfer mechanisms of Hg is mandatory for Hg toxicity testing. For this, an in vitro system using microporous inserts to monitor the transfer across an in vitro placental barrier has been used...

Calcium (Ca2+ ) in mitochondria plays crucial roles in neurons including modulating metabolic processes. Moreover, excessive Ca2+ in mitochondria can lead to cell death. Thus, altered mitochondrial Ca2+ regulation has been implicated in several neurodegenerative diseases including Huntington's disease (HD). HD is a progressive hereditary neurodegenerative disorder that results from abnormally expanded cytosine-adenine-guanine trinucleotide repeats in the huntingtin gene. One neuropathological hallmark of HD is neuronal loss in the striatum and cortex...

Candida parapsilosis complex has recently received special attention due to naturally occurring FKS1 polymorphism associated with high minimal inhibitory concentrations for echinocandin and the increase of clonal outbreaks of strains resistant to commonly used antifungals such as fluconazole. Despite the previous fact, little is known about the genetic mechanism associated with echinocandin resistance. Therefore, the present study was designed to investigate the mechanism of acquired echinocandin resistance in C...

N-Acyl-homoserine lactones (AHL) play a major role in the communication of Gram-negative bacteria. They influence processes such as biofilm formation, swarming motility, and bioluminescence in the aquatic environment. A comprehensive analytical method was developed to elucidate the "chemical communication" in pure bacterial cultures as well as in the aquatic environment and engineered environments with biofilms. Due to the high diversity of AHLs and their low concentrations in water, a sensitive and selective LC-ESI-MS/MS method combined with solid-phase extraction was developed for 34 AHLs, optimized and validated to quantify AHLs in bacterial conditioned medium, river water, and treated wastewater...

Bloodstream infections (BSI) caused by carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacilli (CR-GNB) are a subject of major clinical concern, mainly those associated with carbapenemase-producing isolates. Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has been proposed to detect specific β-lactamases, including KPC. We aimed to detect KPC enzyme directly from positive blood cultures using MALDI-TOF MS. Overall, 146 clinical Gram-negative bacilli (46 CR-GNB) recovered from consecutive blood cultures were evaluated...

Hepatitis C virus is an important global cause of hepatitis and subsequently cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. These infections may also cause extrahepatic manifestations, including insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus. These two complications can potentially reduce sustained virologic responses (SVR) in some drug regimens for this infection. Metformin has important biochemical effects that can limit viral replication in cellular cultures and can improve the response to antiviral drug therapy based on ribavirin and interferon...

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis and treatment of lower respiratory tract infections is the mainstay of management of lung disease in cystic fibrosis (CF). When sputum samples are unavailable, diagnosis relies mainly on cultures from oropharyngeal specimens; however, there are concerns about whether this approach is sensitive enough to identify lower respiratory organisms. Bronchoscopy and related procedures such as bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) are invasive but allow the collection of lower respiratory specimens from non-sputum producers...
