INTRODUCTION: Repair of inguinal hernia is a common procedure, but there is a lack of consensus as to the optimal repair technique along with the use of mesh and methods of mesh fixation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of fibrin sealant for mesh fixation in laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal (TEP) inguinal hernia repair. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A study was conducted of the first 200 patients undergoing TEP hernia repair with mesh fixation using fibrin sealant between March 2012 and January 2014...

The synthesis, structure, and full characterization of a redox-switchable germylene based on a [3]ferrocenophane ligand arrangement, [Fc(NMes)2Ge] (4), is presented. The title compound is readily available from Fc(NHMes)2 (2) and Ge{N(SiMe3)2}2, or from the dilithiated compound Fc(NLiMes)2 · 3 Et2O (3) and GeCl2. Cyclic voltammetry studies are provided for 4 confirming the above mentioned view of a redox-switchable germylene metalloligand. Although several 1:1 Rh(I) and Ir(I) complexes of 4 (5 - 7) are cleanly formed in solution, all attempts to isolate them in pure form failed due to stability problems...

PURPOSE: Laparoendoscopic single site totally extraperitoneal (TEP) hernia repair showed to be a feasible alternative to conventional laparoscopic hernia repair; nevertheless single site surgery, with the loss of instruments triangulation can be a demanding procedure. To overcome those hurdles, the Single Site® (SS) platform of the da Vinci (DV) Si robotic system enables to perform surgical procedures through a 25-mm skin incision, with a stable 3D vision and restoring an adequate triangulation of the surgical instruments...

BACKGROUND: Negative symptoms are considered core symptoms of schizophrenia. The Brief Negative Symptom Scale (BNSS) was developed to measure this symptomatic dimension according to a current consensus definition. The present study examined the psychometric properties of the German version of the BNSS. To expand former findings on convergent validity, we employed the Temporal Experience Pleasure Scale (TEPS), a hedonic self-report that distinguishes between consummatory and anticipatory pleasure...

Laparoscopic repair of inguinal hernia is mini-invasive and has confirmed effects. The procedures include intraperitoneal onlay mesh (IPOM) repair, transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) repair and total extraperitoneal (TEP) repair. These procedures have totally different anatomic point of view, process and technical key points from open operations. The technical details of these operations are discussed in this article, also the strategies of treatment for some special conditions.

The nature of intermolecular interactions governing supramolecular polymerizations is very important for controlling their cooperativity. In order to address this problem, supramolecular columns made of Pt(II) and Pd(II) complexes of oligo(phenylene ethynylene)-based pyridine (OPE) and tetrazolylpyridine ligands (TEP) were investigated through the dispersion-corrected PM6 method. Aromatic, CH-π, M-Cl and metallophilic interactions helped stabilize the supramolecules studied, and their geometries and associated cooperativities were in excellent agreement with experimental data...

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and electric currents modulate regeneration; however, the interplays between biochemical and biophysical signals during regeneration remain poorly understood. We investigate the interactions between redox and bioelectric activities during tail regeneration in Xenopus laevis tadpoles. We show that inhibition of NADPH oxidases-mediated production of ROS, or scavenging or blocking their diffusion into cells, impairs regeneration and consistently regulate the dynamics of membrane potential, transepithelial potential (TEP) and electric current densities (JI) during regeneration...

Advances in the knowledge of the biology of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) have revealed molecular information used for systemic cancer therapy targeting metastatic disease, with an important impact on patients overall survival (OS) and quality of life. However, a biopsy of overt metastases is an invasive procedure limited to certain locations and not easily acceptable in the clinic. Moreover, a single biopsy cannot reflect the clonal heterogeneity of the tumor. The analysis of peripheral blood samples of cancer patients represents a new source of cancer-derived material, known as liquid biopsy, and its components can be obtained from almost all body fluids...

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic total extraperitoneal (TEP) inguinal hernia repair is a well-known approach to inguinal hernia repair that is usually performed under general anesthesia (GA). To date, no reports compare the efficacy of spinal anesthesia (SA) with that of GA for laparoscopic hernia repairs. The purpose of this study was to compare the surgical outcome of TEP inguinal hernia repair performed when the patient was treated under SA with that performed under GA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between July 2015 and July 2016, 50 patients were prospectively randomized to either the GA TEP group (Group I) or the SA TEP group (Group II)...

Mesoionic carbenes (MICs) are currently hugely popular as ligands and triazolylidenes are arguably the most prominent classes of such MICs. We present here mesoionic carbenes with ferrocenyl substituents that can act as metalloligands for the generation of heteromultimetallic iridium(I) and gold(I) complexes. The ferrocenyl substituents allow for reversible oxidation of these heteromultimetallic complexes and these oxidation steps have a strong influence on the donor properties of the MICs. Tolman electronic parameters (TEP) determined from analysis of the iridium-carbonyl complexes show that the neutral ferrocenyl-MIC ligands are stronger donors than the imidazolylidene based carbenes, the one-electron oxidized ferrocenyl MICs are in the range of the tricyclohexyl phosphines and the two-electron oxidized forms which are electron-poor lie in the range of triphenyl phosphines...

Background: The modulation efficacy of Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on consciousness improvement of patient with disorder of consciousness (DOC) has not been definitely confirmed. Objective: This study proposes TMS-EEG to assess effects of repetitive TMS (rTMS) on brain modulation of DOC. Methods: Twenty sessions of 10 Hz rTMS were applied over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex for a patient with DOC. Measures of Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R) score, TMS-evoked potential (TEP), perturbation complexity index (PCI), and global mean field power (GMFP) were used to evaluate the consciousness level of the patient at three intervals: before the rTMS protocol (T0), immediately after one session rTMS (T1), and immediately after 20 sessions (T2)...

OBJECTIVE: Antiepileptic drug (AED) treatment failures may occur because there is insufficient drug in the brain or because of a lack of relevant therapeutic response. Until now it has not been possible to measure these factors. It has been recently shown that the combination of transcranial magnetic stimulation and electroencephalography (TMS-EEG) can measure the effects of drugs in healthy volunteers. TMS-evoked EEG potentials (TEPs) comprise a series of positive and negative deflections that can be specifically modulated by drugs with a well-known mode of action targeting inhibitory neurotransmission...

We report the synthesis and remarkable properties of the phosphine P(NIiPr)3 (NIiPr=1,3-diisopropyl-4,5-dimethylimidazolin-2-ylidenamino), a crystalline solid accessible through a short and scalable route. Evaluation of the electron-donor properties reveals a Tolman electronic parameter (TEP) value of 2029.7 cm(-1) for the new phosphine that is significantly lower than those of all known phosphines or even N-heterocyclic carbenes. Moreover, P(NIiPr)3 is more basic [pKBH(+) (MeCN)=38.8] than Verkade's proazaphosphatranes, thus being the strongest reported nonionic phosphorus(III) superbase...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Inguinal hernia repair is among the most common procedures performed worldwide and the laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal (TEP) approach is a recognized and effective surgical technique. Although technically advantageous because of the option of no mesh fixation and no need for creation of a peritoneal flap resulting, in less postoperative pain and faster recovery, TEP has not achieved the popularity it deserves, mainly because of its complexity and steep learning curve...
