Breast cancer (BC) is a heterogeneous disease which has been characterised and stratified by many platforms such as clinicopathological risk factors, genomic assays, computer generated models, and various "-omic" technologies. Genomic, proteomic and transcriptomic analysis in breast cancer research is well established, and metabolomics, which can be considered a downstream manifestation of the former disciplines, is of growing interest. The past decade has seen significant progress made within the field of clinical metabolomic BC research, with several groups demonstrating results with significant promise in the setting of BC screening and biological characterisation, as well as future potential for prognostic metabolomic biomarkers...

NSUN2 is a tRNA methyltransferase and plays an important role in cell development via modifying RNA methylation. We aimed to evaluate the expression of NSUN2 and its prognostic value in HNSCC. Random-effects model of meta-analysis shows 1.99-folds (95% CI: 1.89-2.09) upregulation of NSUN2 expression in HNSCC versus normal tissues. Patients with high NSUN2 levels had approximately 22 months shorter overall survival, and had a higher mortality risk than those with low one (p-trend = 0.020). In conclusion, NSUN2 is a potential independent prognostic marker and may be a potential therapeutic target in HNSCC...

INTRODUCTION: The Revised International Prognostic Scoring System (IPSS-R) for myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) has established an intermediate category where a disease-modifying intervention is a matter of debate. Flow cytometry allows us to determine a fraction of immature myeloid cells in a semiautomated procedure. The aim of this study, mirroring IPSS-R study inclusion criteria, was to test whether bone marrow (BM) CD34+My percentage has independent prognostic value in the MDS setting...

Gastric stump cancer (GSC) is a carcinoma arising from the remnant stomach following gastric surgery for benign or malignant disease, and is more common in men. The risk of morbidity has an obvious time dependence. GSC incidence is likely to rise with lengthening of the initial operation interval. The GSC time interval after malignant disease is significantly shorter than that of benign disease. GSC etiologies mainly include duodenogastric reflux and denervation of the gastric mucosa resulting in the change of the gastric environment after gastrectomy and the Helicobacter pylori infection...

Gastric stump cancer was first defined as cancer occurring in the remnant stomach 5 years or later following distal subtotal gastrectomy of a benign stomach tumor. This definition was expanded to include malignant gastric cancer recurrence following distal gastrectomy and heterochronous gastric adenocarcinoma. Evidence regarding whether patients with gastric stump cancer had the same prognosis as those with primary gastric cancer has been inconsistent. Nonetheless, considering the notable differences regarding risk factors, treatment strategies, and lymph node metastasis status, gastric stump cancer should be differentiated from primary stomach cancer...

BACKGROUND: Malignancy is associated with an increased risk of venous thromboembolism. Inferior vena cava filters are a viable alternative when anticoagulation is infeasible because of the risk of bleeding. Although the current guidelines recommend that all patients with a vena cava filter be treated with anticoagulation treatment when the risk of bleeding is reduced, studies concerning the role of concomitant anticoagulation after vena cava filter insertion in high-risk patients are scarce...

Dysregulation of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) plays important roles in cancer development and progression. In this work, we attempted to develop a lncRNA signature to improve prognosis prediction of colorectal cancer. A comprehensive analysis for the lncRNA expression and corresponding clinical information of 344 colorectal patients has been performed based on the data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). We randomly divided TCGA data into a training set ( n = 172) and a testing set ( n = 172). A four-lncRNA signature has been established which was significantly associated with the overall survival of colorectal cancer patients...

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been associated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but the underlying molecular mechanisms of their specific association with hepatocarcinogenesis have not been fully explored. Methods: miR503HG was identified by microarray and validated by real-time PCR. Survival analysis was evaluated using the Kaplan-Meier method and assessed using the log-rank test. In vitro and in vivo assays were preformed to explore the biological effects of miR503HG in HCC cells. The interaction of miR503HG with HNRNPA2B1 was identified by RNA pull-down and RNA immunoprecipitation...
