BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Few studies have investigated the effects of abutment screw diameter in the stress of dental implants and alveolar bones under occlusal forces. In this study, we investigated how variations in implant diameter, abutment screw diameter, and bone condition affect stresses in the abutment screw, implant, and surrounding bone. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three-dimensional finite element (FE) models were fabricated for dental implants with external hex-type abutments measuring 4 and 5 mm in diameter...

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Translucent monolithic zirconia restorations have recently introduced. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical behavior and the survival rate of the posterior third-generation monolithic zirconia crowns (MZCs) during three years of clinical service. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four patients who needed thirty crowns were enrolled in this study. Digital impressions were made, and the crowns were milled and cemented with a resin cement...

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The diagnosis of peri-implantitis using periapical radiographs is crucial. Recently, artificial intelligence may apply in radiographic image analysis effectively. The aim of this study was to differentiate the degree of marginal bone loss of an implant, and also to classify the severity of peri-implantitis using a deep learning model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A dataset of 800 periapical radiographic images were divided into training ( n  = 600), validation ( n  = 100), and test ( n  = 100) datasets with implants used for deep learning...

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: It is unclear about whether the oral health has impact on physical performance. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the association between oral health and physical performance in 300 military adults in Taiwan. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Oral health was assessed by the presence of periodontitis and dental caries. The status of cardiorespiratory and muscular endurance capacity was respectively assessed by tertiles of time for a 3000-m run and 2-min push-up numbers...

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The adaptation and marginal integrity of computer-aided designed and computer-aided manufactured (CAD/CAM) crowns after exposure to thermal aging need to be investigated. The present in-vitro study was designed to investigate the marginal integrity of CAD/CAM fabricated crowns cemented on extracted teeth after thermocycling aging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-six newly extracted human premolars were prepared for full-coverage CAD/CAM crowns and were divided into two groups (leucite-reinforced glass-ceramics and lithium disilicate glass-ceramics)...

The accumulation of dental plaque is a precursor to various dental infections, including lesions, inflammation around dental implants, and inflammation under dentures. Traditional cleaning methods involving physical removal and chemical agents often fall short of eliminating bacteria and their protective biofilms. These methods can also inadvertently lead to bacteria that resist drugs and upset the mouth's microbial harmony. To counter these issues, a new approach is needed that can target and clear away dental plaque, minimize biofilms and bacteria, and thus support sustained dental health...

Compelling evidence indicates that dyslipidemia is positively associated with oral lichen planus (OLP). The types and magnitude of lipid metabolism disturbance in peripheral blood of OLP patients have been investigated in different studies. Yet, consensus on how these different lipid components varied in levels for the development of OLP lesions has not been reached so far. Herein, a total of 8 eligible studies were recognized, which enrolled 533 cases of OLP and 499 healthy controls. The analysis showed that the average total triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels were considerably higher, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels were significantly lower in OLP patients compared to healthy controls...

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Porcine collagen is widely used in regenerative therapies to generate membranes for bone augmentation. However, porcine or bovine gelatin or collagen is often not appropriate for patients with creed and religious beliefs or for allergic reasons. In this study, we evaluated the potential of fish gelatin to generate membranes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fish gelatin and hydroxyapatite (HAp) were used at three different ratios (2:0, 2:1, 2:1.5, and 2:2) to prepare gelatin-hydroxyapatite (G-HAp) membranes via freeze-drying and heat-crosslinking...

However, further investigation is required to elucidate the temporal and causal relationships between the aforementioned disorders. BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Resin-modified glass ionomers (RMGIs) have been recommended as liner and cement to provide the teeth with mechanical support, a chemical barrier, and thermal insulation. Acemannan, the main polysaccharide extracted from Aloe vera, is a promising inductive material in vitro and in vivo . This study aimed to develop acemannan-containing bioactive resin-modified glass ionomers (RMGIs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Acemannan (3%, 5%, and 10%) was added to the three types of RMGIs (RU-HBM1/Fuji II LC/Vitrebond) to generate 3%, 5%, and 10% aceRMGIs (aceRU/aceFuji/aceVB)...

And serum zinc (Zn) levels were low in patients with periodontitis combined with DM. Herein, this study aimed to explore the association between dietary Zn intake and the risk of periodontitis in DM patients, in order to provide some scientific references for the prevention and treatment for periodontitis clinically. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Demographic and clinical data of DM patients were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) database in 2009-2014 in this cross-sectional study...
