This paper shows how drinking in one's own home affords different affective experiences to drinking in public settings such as bars, pubs and restaurants. A thematic analysis of interviews with 40 Australians aged 30-65 identified three main variations in alcohol-associated feelings, sensations and urges. Alcohol was used at home to decelerate, but in contrast, people were enlivened when drinking in public venues. Drinking in public generated a sense of vigilance and greater requirement to self-monitor than usually felt necessary at home...

BACKGROUND: Poor oral health is highly prevalent among elderlies and may impact quality of life of elderly people. In this scenario, oral health has been often linked to general health and chronic disorders, including distinct features of frailty. The aim of the present umbrella review of systematic reviews was to assess the scientific literature on the correlation between oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) and elderly to present a multidisciplinary approach to these complex patients...

Stimulating bone formation potentially suggests therapeutics for orthopedic diseases including osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. Osteoblasts are key to bone remodeling because they act as the only bone-forming cells. miR-877-5p has a chondrocyte-improving function in osteoarthritis, but its effect on osteoblast differentiation is unknown. Here, miR-877-5p-mediated osteoblast differentiation was studied. Real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction was performed to measure miR-877-5p expression during the osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells...

BACKGROUND: Globally, the cases of type 2 diabetes are increasing, and this is largely attributed to lifestyle changes. Though diabetes is primarily a metabolic disease determined by biological factors, psychosocial aspects play a crucial role in its progression and management. However, the literature on psychosocial dimensions of diabetes management is minuscule and scattered. OBJECTIVE: This synthesis sought to understand the psychosocial facilitators and barriers to type 2 diabetes management and coping among adults...

BACKGROUND: Currently, there is no clear consensus on whether medical treatment or endoscopic treatment should be used for peptic ulcer bleeding patients with adherent clot. The aim of this study is to investigate the hemostatic effects of medical treatment, single endoscopic treatment, and combination endoscopic treatment for peptic ulcer bleeding (PUB) patients with adherent clot. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed PUB patients with adherent clot who underwent endoscopic examination or treatment in our center from March 2014 to January 2023 and received intravenous administration of proton pump inhibitors...

BACKGROUND: The experience of cumulative trauma may be common in bipolar disorder (BD). However, it is not frequently reported as most studies focus on childhood trauma without examining differences in the amount of trauma experienced. This systematic review aimed to determine the prevalence of lifetime cumulative trauma in BD as well as explore associated illness outcomes. METHODS: A systematic review was completed in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines...

A systematic review was performed to summarize the scientific evidence and critically evaluate the effects of cryopreservation on sperm morphology in freshwater fish, and to assess the methodologies for sperm morphology classification. The search strategy was applied to four electronic databases (CAB Direct, Pub Med, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science). The main inclusion criteria involved studies on semen from freshwater fish subjected to the cryopreservation process and evaluation of sperm quality through morphology...

Plant U-box E3 ligases PUB20 and PUB21 are flg22-triggered signaling components and negatively regulate immune responses. Plant U-box proteins (PUBs) constitute a class of E3 ligases that are associated with various stress responses. Among the class IV PUBs featuring C-terminal Armadillo (ARM) repeats, PUB20 and PUB21 are closely related homologs. Here, we show that both PUB20 and PUB21 negatively regulate innate immunity in plants. Loss of PUB20 and PUB21 function leads to enhanced resistance to surface inoculation with the virulent bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv...

BACKGROUND: After the National Mental Health Survey in 2016, multiple individual studies showed inconsistencies in the prevalence rates of psychiatric disorders in India. We performed a meta-analysis to estimate an up-to-date pooled estimate of the prevalence of depression, alcohol use disorder (AUD), anxiety disorder (AD), intellectual disability, suicidal attempt/death, autism, and bipolar disorder (BD) in India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a systematic bibliographic search in Pub Med, Global Health Data Exchange (GHDx), and Google Scholar, along with a manual search for peer-reviewed epidemiological studies reporting the prevalence of depression, AUD, AD, MR, suicidal attempt/death, autism, and BD in India from January 1980 till March 2022...

BACKGROUND: Interventions that alter aspects of the physical environments in which unhealthy behaviours occur have the potential to change behaviour at scale, i.e., across populations, and thereby decrease the risk of several diseases. One set of such interventions involves reducing serving sizes, which could reduce alcohol consumption. The effect of modifying the available range of serving sizes of wine in a real-world setting is unknown. We aimed to assess the impact on the volume of wine sold of removing the largest serving size by the glass from the options available in licensed premises...

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the prevalence and determinants of unhealthy living by gender, age, and comorbidities across South Korean districts. METHODS: For 806,246 men and 923,260 women from 245 districts who participated in the 2010-2017 Korean Community Health Surveys, risk scores were calculated based on obesity, physical inactivity, smoking, and high-risk alcohol consumption, each scored from 0 (lowest risk) to 2 (highest risk). A risk score ≥4 was defined as indicating unhealthy living, and weighted proportions were calculated for each district...

Heart failure is a clinical condition in which the heart is unable to maintain adequate cardiac output. Liraglutide is a glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) analogue that is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, but recent evidence suggests that it might have a beneficial role in treating heart failure. We conducted a review of existing literature and found five relevant studies. Data from these studies were extracted and then extrapolated into results following analysis. Four of the five studies found an increase in heart rate in heart failure patients...

Early exposure of does to sexually active bucks triggers early puberty onset correlating with neuroendocrine changes. However, the sensory pathways that are stimulated by the male are still unknown. Here, we assessed whether responses to olfactory stimuli are modulated by social experience (exposure to males or not) and/or endocrine status (prepubescent or pubescent). We used a calcium imaging approach on goat sensory cells from the main olfactory epithelium (MOE) and the vomeronasal organ (VNO). For both cell types, we observed robust responses to active male hair in females under three physiological conditions: prepubescent females isolated from males (ISOL PrePub), pubescent females exposed to males (INT Pub) and isolated females (ISOL Pub)...

BACKGROUND: Plant U-box (PUB) E3 ubiquitin ligases have vital effects on various biological processes. Therefore, a comprehensive and systematic identification of the members of the U-box gene family in potato will help to understand the evolution and function of U-box E3 ubiquitin ligases in plants. RESULTS: This work identified altogether 74 PUBs in the potato (StPUBs) and examined their gene structures, chromosomal distributions, and conserved motifs. There were seventy-four StPUB genes on ten chromosomes with diverse densities...

Purple urine bag syndrome (PUBS) is a peculiar phenomenon and corresponds to the appearance of purplish-colored urine. It is associated with urinary tract infections occurring mainly in debilitated elderly women with constipation and long-term indwelling urinary catheters. We share a case involving PUBS in an 87-year-old female patient, explore the pathophysiology, and discuss potential management options for this uncommon syndrome.

There is a translational and clinical literature linking early adversity with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and inflammation.
